Hi I wanted to get some advice from the experts here regarding a Colt Python with 2.5" barrel. I am told it was made in 1977. The box is serial numbered to the gun, but the current owner questions whether the box is original because it is in such good shape. However, it seems to come with the appropriate paperwork, so that makes me think a reproduction is less likely. Serial Number on the gun is 75xxxE.

Take a look at the photo and tell me what y'all think.
Does anyone know if a Python with that SN would have been made with a 2.5" barrel?

Does the box and paperwork look legitimate?
How much do you think retail price on this gun is?

Any opinions are welcome.

Well the serial number falls within the range for 1977. Starting with serial number 48301E and finishing with 86200E. One thing that puzzles me is the Purchasers Record Card...from the Sturm Ruger Company! That part of the paperwork wouldn't be considered legitimate and seems to be a little out of place with a Colt Python.

Yea I hadn't noticed the Ruger card in that photo.
I will ask about it.
Does anyone know if Colt used the orange plastic cylinder spacer in their packaging back in '77?

Colt did not use the orange cylinder insert in 1977.

Serial number 75XXXE would have been made in 1977.

I'd call the box and papers fakes from the fake box man, which reduces the value.
Value on 2 1/2" Pythons is up, but much depends on the actual value and whether the gun itself is in proper timing and working order, and on the grips and sights being original.

how much would the gun alone be worth?
Why do you think the box and papers are faked?
I don't doubt you, just want to know what you are basing it on.

If they ever oiled the revolver there will be some staining on the Styrofoam.
My 78 box looks the same but it is in bad condition.

My 1983 has an square 4" x 4" orange string tag in addition,,don't know when they changed.

Could hv been in a safe wrapped in wax paper since new, looks like it.
Is the serial number on a gold plastic label? my 78 is.

HTH all I know and that ain't much,,good luck.

Buyers market right now but upwards of $2000 for sure, at least around here.
Might be $3,000 else where for the 2 1/2"

Wouldn't the box label show the barrel length?

I can't see enough of the box to comment on its authenticity.

Colt did not use any plastic cylinder inserts in 1977. Those came along much later.

The strings on the hang tags were yellow, not white.

The box, literature, and hang tag, have the signature of "BLOVIT" (infamous Colt box forger on eBay) all over it. Colt also did not include the letter in 1977.

This has bad deal written all over it.

I agree with content; the styrofoam insert looks too pristine to have been around since 1977, with or without the gun in it. I have bought new Colts where the styrofoam already had any number of marks and oil stains on them; this one with the Python looks brand new.

First box inserts are from circa 1977. Note the amount of staining and discoloration on the inside and the wood planking pattern on both the inside and the outside of the inserts. Aside from bringing it home, the gun was never stored in the box after I bought it; same with the second box inserts.

Second box inserts from circa 1984. Same condition as previous inserts. Note there is no wood planking texture on box lid.

Is there anyway to know for sure (other than getting a letter from Colt) as to whether the 2.5 inch barrel was original to the gun?

I guess maybe I am better off just staying away from this one.
