Ok, I appreciate everyone's input so far. It's really helped me narrow things down. Since I'm new to hunting rifles, I appreciate the experience you all have as to makes and models of the past 20 years that can still be had at a decent price.

Here are my criteria:

- Under $600 new or used
- chambered in .308
- under 41" overall length
- bolt action
- iron sights

Anything else goes, that's all I require. I know about the Savage Hog Hunter, the Mossberg MVP, and the Rem 700 offerings, but what else would fit this criteria that I'm missing?

Humm, the iron sights are throwing me off, I know you can have them added but from the factory they are rare, as are 41" rifles, there are TONS of them 42", you put a 22" tube and a 13.5" LOP on a short action and you end up 42-42.5".
Maybe an old Remington 600 if you can find one, never measured it but I am pretty sure they come in under 41" Or if you have a little more to spend a CZ FS.

Not sure if it fits your OAL but I'd get a Winchester M70 Compact in .308 and add aftermarket sights of your choice.

Ahh... Aftermarket sights... I really don't want to go that route. I don't like having to modify stuff I'm not quite an expert with because then I will have to find a gunsmith I trust and spend more money and time.

I'll modify a Glock myself all day, but hunting rifles are a different thing. I don't know them well enough.

Shooting 3 inch steel at 300 yards here with a Rem 700 SPS heavy Varmint barrel and a Nikon 4X12 prostaff scope standing offhand with no rest!!....shooting 168 grain Nosler Custom comps or 125 grain speer TNT varmint bullets at almost 3000 FPS...Yea I stuck a cheap $125 Choate Varmint free float stock on it but....Who wouldn't want one? I can pretty much decide what eye I shoot a groundhog in at 300 yards?

Your wanting a short rifle? How about one you can do miracles with CHEAP!

Yeah, really, the Ruger GSR is what started my want of a rifle like this, but it's too pricey.

I want to stay under $600. Forgot to add that to the criteria.

The Ruger is what $200 more? I'd save a bit more and get exactly what you want, you'll be happier in the long run and quickly forget about the extra $200. My experience has taught me to buy the best I can get, even if I have to wait a bit longer, and I'll be happier.

Or you might could try and find a used GSR, but I doubt there are many out there.....

yup. find a used ruger GSR if that's what you want. i let mine go with the xs full rail and two spare ten round mags for barely a benjamin more than your budget...they're out there. or save a little more and buy one new.

Can fellas still find inexpensive FR-8s? Love the hell outa mine as a .308, bolt action, carbine format toughie.

Who wouldn't want one? I can pretty much decide what eye I shoot a groundhog in at 300 yards?
Really...offhand yet. Never met anyone could shoot like that. Congratulations.

Thats a short rifle.. If it wasnt for the bolt action requirement.. I'd go with a T/C encore. That said, savage 10 or axis.. May be longer at first, but a barrel cut and recrown and you can be well below the length and well below price (a used 10 will be what.. 300-400??)

The Browning BLR's are not pure bolt action but lever operated bolts... Outstanding iron sight on mine... I intended to scope it when I purchased it but the short rifles and iron sights made me change my mind...

It seems that those with the least money make the most posts on what to do!

My advice is to use what you have or borrow to get by.

The 700 and 7xx guns are ones I would not even borrow.

You might be able to find a CZ557 for your price point with a bit of haggling. That would be my recommendation. I don't own one, but in handling them and talking to people that do, it sure seems like a good bit of bang for your buck.

If you can find an older Remington Model Seven, especially a youth model, you should be good to go. The older 18.5" barrels had iron sights. Pretty sure the youth model was under 41". Easy enough to cut down a youth stock further if needed. They are hardwood, but not walnut; no real aesthetic loss to cut it.

Here's what they look like, although this one has a 20" barrel and is in .243 rather than .308. They are not easy to find in the .308 caliber.

Thanks everyone.

JS, I think it may be a toss-up between the M70 you posted and the Savage Hog Hunter.

my Zastava M70 is the 2nd from the bottom and it's built solid as a rock. A little tung oil and boiled linseed really made the wood pop.
