I'm looking for another good rifle to start loading for. Not 223/5.56. I have plenty of that.. :)

Just another fun caliber that is easy to load and shoot, that uses small rifle primers. I have a BUNCH of SRP from getting my dad's loading stuff.

Thanks!

Happy loading and shooting!!!

You could load .308 using the Lapua SRP brass. I'm actually getting ready to order some and do some testing since it seems to be easier to find CCI BR4 primers.

You can look at:
6.5mm Grendel, 6mm PPC or the 6mm BR. All use a SRP and all are fun and accurate cartridges, especially the 6mm cartridges.

204 Ruger, 17 Remington (some say this is not easy to reload), 221 Remington Fireball, 300 BLK and 22 Hornet (Speer recommends small pistol here these days) are ones I shoot and enjoy.

I have a bunch of mixed primers that I bought during the '08 panic and I've been using them for loading 9mm Luger just to get rid of them. They work great.

I know a shooter who owns only AR-15 rifles and one 9mm handgun. (Glock G19) He buys only SRP and uses them for his 9mm ammo too.

.30 Carbine. The War Baby is a hoot to shoot.
Got to agree with this one. It's fun to shoot, doesn't take a lot of powder, not a high recoil rifle, and is a good one for new shooters to start out with.

For the fun factor and already having .223 cases and SR primers I'd recommend a 300 Blackout. Brass is made easily from .223 brass, you can shoot any 30 caliber bullet from 110-220 grains, uses smaller charges of slow pistol powders, and low recoil. Rifles can be bought in single shots, bolt actions, AR-15 platforms in 16" carbine length and pistol length barrels. It makes a not too expensive to shoot short range hunting rifle. Lots of shooters use 110 to 125 grain bullets for hunting. I like the .308 147 gr. M80 FMJ bullet for plinking. The 300 BLK. has ballistics close to the AK 7.62x39 round. Most popular powders are H110/Win 296, Lil-Gun, and AA 1680 for heavier bullets plus several other powders are suitable. Just an idea since you already have .223 components. Lake City military cases makes the best converted 300 BLK brass. Not a long range rifle but getting popular for short range hunting. The most important factor is cases are available, inexpensive, and this isn't true with a lot of other specialty calibers. Also in specialty calibers popular bullets haven't been available for long periods lately.

I have been loading 30 carbine with small rifle primers with 110 gr soft nose bullets --fun to shoot & will come in handy beside my bed if need for special occasions that are cropping up in USA these days

You know you could probably find someone to trade some primers with.

I certainly wouldn't choose a rifle caliber based on what size primer it took.

That's just me. If you feel strongly about it, by all means ignore this post.

OP, another vote for both the 300 Blackout and for using them (depending on brand) in pistol calibers. I've had good luck with small rifle primers - Remington (including the 6 1/2 size), Tula, and Winchester in 9MM, 40 S&W, and 38 Special. CCI SRPs would not be ignited in several striker fired pistols including Glocks and M&Ps.
As mentioned above 300 Blackout would be a great caliber to play with and if you already have an AR, it's as simple as building/buying an upper, pushing 2 pins - presto-changeo you have a 30 caliber AR platform. Another option is 6.5 SPC, although brass is harder to find compared to 223.
Have fun with it.
