Would you trade a S&W 66 (no dash) for a snubbie 686plus?

I've always wanted a 686, and really like the snubbies, and there's a guy here that has a LNIB 7-shot 686 and is looking for another .357 Smith with a longer (4'-6") barrel, and I was thinking about making an offer.
My 66 is in "good+" condition, and may have been a police trade-in, but with extremely tight lock-up. The guy is wanting some cash tossed in if there's a difference in value, which there seems to be, but I figure I'm the one holding the early-mid 70's piece, and I'm not inclined to go beyond an even trade for a spankin'-new one.
His pistol has the box, paperwork and a speedloader, mine just has the Pachmayrs that came on it when I got it, and some nicer Herritt walnut target grips I have on it now.
I've done a little Googling on the new 686's, but I thought I'd get better info here.
As always, any info or advice is much appreciated.......

NO WAY! Just buy the 686 with cash and have both of them.

depends..........if the 66 is gathering dust, i would rather have a gun that will get used and would do the trade for the 686.

if the 66 sees regular usage, well, think i would just keep it. No point in filling a hole in the line-up if it just creates another hole.

Tough call for me. I had both a 686+ and a 66, the 66 is still around, the 686 is not. I'm not partial to L frames.

Buying it outright is out of the question (he's asking $750), I only have $480 in the 66, so it's a financially solid deal for me (should he go for it).
I'm largely concerned about the quality of the newer Smiths. I'm reading from the (presumably) old-school,fan boys complaining about various things on all the newer Smiths, like pinned front sights, MIM parts, poor finish, frame locks, etc.
The 66 is currently a "house gun", kept in the back room next to the computer so who ever is back here isn't unarmed should the front door get kicked in, and I probably wouldn't be toting the 686 much at all, as I prefer my little 642 Airweight.
This is largely another case of "wanting a new toy", y'all unnerstand ;).

686+ revolvers are common, and if you look on gunbroker.com, very easy to find. Unless the 66 just doesn't interest you any more, I don't think I'd make that trade.

That being said, I have a 3" 686+ and it is my most useful handgun all around. I wouldn't trade it for a 66 myself as I open cary the 686. Aside from easier concealment (which doesn't matter to me), IMO there is nothing the 66 will do better than the 686

I have both a 19, and a 686+
for just general "house gun/range toy" type duties they both work well.
I'd offer a straight trade and maybe upto a little cash (<$100).
Since it's not a "work" gun (i.e. daily carry, accustomed hunting piece, bedside defenses etc...) just a kinda generalized purpose one it seems, I wouldn't worry too much and go ahead and try new things.

L frames are the Cadillacs of 357's, while the K frames are more svelt.

(the GP100's are more like a F250, but that's neither here nor there)

Nope, that 66 isn't likely to come back around for $480, and you will have plenty of opportunities to pay <$750 for a 686+ in the future.
I'd keep the 66, start putting cash away for a 686+ when one rolls around used for a better price.

Many thanks for the good replies, guys. After the comments here and on another forum, as well as e-mailing a knowledgable freind that's had a couple 586/686's, I've decided I'd better hang on to the old Model 66.
But, had the 686 been a pre-lock gun, I would've taken a run at it hours ago !!:D
Anyway, thanks again.....

I would have to have both. I already do have both, but if I didn't have both, I'd be working on a way to get both.

I have a 66-1 and I would never trade for a newer Smith. I've been cruising the gun stores, and I've noticed a big difference in quality compared to newer Smiths. Some are OK, but overall the quality has declined considerably.

Same goes with Ruger. I had to send back 4 brand new Rugers in 2013. Three of those were defective beyond repair and had to be replaced.

Hold on to that classic, you will never find the same quality (fit and finish) in the newer ones.

I only own a 686, and while it is my favorite revolver, I don't think it's a trade worth making. Honestly, I don't care for a 7 shot revolver. I realize that in a self defense scenario, an extra shot means a lot, but there's something about a "6-shooter" that feels right.

Keep the 66...or sell it to me. Either way is fine.

Don't swap or sell, if you want the 686, buy it. Best of both worlds.

I might, cause I really like my 2 1/2" 686. I had a 6" 66 and sold it. Shot great, just didn't suit me. (A short barreled 66 would still be mine)

That said, he holds his 686 in too high of a regard.

Nope. I'd keep the 66. If you have a 66 you don't need no stinking 686. (and $750 is an absurd price IMO)
