Last week a good friend asked if I would take some visiting Canadians to the range,,,
They are in-laws of her boyfriends daughter so I said "Sure, why not."

This happened Yesterday, the 24th.

First off let me say that all went very well,,,
Everyone got to fire several different handguns,,,
And there were no accidental discharges or safety concerns.

There were however 3 times the amount of people I expected.

My friend, who asked me to do this in the first place,,,
Well, let's just say there was a slight communication breakdown.

I thought the group was to be four adults,,,
It turns out they actually meant four adults and their adult children.

So I show up at our arranged meeting place,,,
To find eleven smiling faces all eager to shoot something.

These are the handguns I took for the event:
  • 2 Ruger 22/45 pistols,
  • CZ-75B in .22 and 9mm,
  • Bersa Thunder in .22 and .380,
  • S&W models 34, 15, 18, and 629.

Since these good folk are all French Canadians,,,
I decided to do an homage to their heritage,,,
I brought out my 1892 8mm Lebel revolver.

That was a particular hit with one of the older ladies,,,
She remembers shooting her grandfathers Lebel as a child.

We went to the part of the range reserved for SASS shooters,,,
There were trees for shade and a 3' by 6' table at the line.

I laid all of the guns out and fortunately had all of the magazines pre-loaded,,,
Then I handed out some safety cards and went over the rules,,,
The seven unexpected guests were all in their 20's,,,
And I must say they were very attentive.

I had two shooters going at any given time,,,
I let them choose what they wanted to try out.

As I got one going I left them in the hands of my friend,,,
Then I went to the other end and started another,,,
Then the first went to the shade and waited,,,
It was a nice assembly line type of thing.

Man was it hot out there,,,
It hit 100 by eleven o'clock,,,
The danged humidity was high as well.

The Rugers, CZ's, the Lebel, and the 629 got most of the use,,,
Although all of the handguns got some bit of workout,,,
I was loading 10 in the 22's and 5 in the semi's.

After about 90 minutes of furious helping and loading of mags,,,
The older folk retired to the shade and left it to their kids,,,
Two of the girls got into a serious duel with the Rugers,,,
And the guys got to do 9mm 16 round mag-dumps.

One lady was a very tiny little thing,,,
She took to the Bersa Thunder 22 very quickly,,,
By the end of the day she was cutting a hole in the bullseye at 15 yards.

The matron of the group was in her early 60's,,,
She was the first to ask to try shooting the .44 Magnum,,,
I only loaded one round at a time but she had no problem handling it.

At any given moment there were 2-3 cell phone videos being made.

All in all we were on the line for about 3 to 3.5 hours,,,
My thumbs are sore for loading so many rounds of ammo.

I gotta get an Uplulu for the 9mm mags.

I bought those large (18") Shoot-N-See targets,,,
They worked well as people could see where they hit,,,
I also taped some clay pigeons to a large cardboard sheet,,,
The two dueling girls made good use of that shooting the Rugers.

My friend had already said she and her boyfriend would front the ammo costs,,,
But the Canadian gentleman who was in charge of the group said no,,,
He asked me how much ammo money we had gone through,,,
I did an accurate estimate and gave him the total.

If the size of the grins was any indication,,,
Everyone had a great time.

We parted amid lots of hugs and handshaking,,,
The last thing the patriarch did was hand me an envelope.

It contained exactly twice the amount I had quoted him,,,
I was told in no uncertain terms to accept it,,,
So I thanked him and did just that.

It was hectic, frantic, and involved a lot of quick improvisation,,,
But everything went off without a hitch,,,
And everyone had fun.

By the way,,,
the tiny blonde was Joannie Rochette.

I can't believe I introduced a Canadian Olympian to handgun shooting.

What a day,,,
I'm glad it's over,,,
But I had an absolute blast! :D

What's a foreign 8mm Lebel got to do with French Canada? Quebec has had nothing to do with France for 255 years.
However, thanks for showing 'em shooters aren't rectal orifi like their Provincial government wants 'em to think. Quebec's Provincial government wants to have their own firearm registry despite that being illegal here. (No jurisdiction like your States have.) And they're totally draconian when it comes to law abiding voters shooting. Almost as bad as Mass.. NY and CA.

That's WILD man! Mighty fine of you also.

I'm not what you would call a big figure skating fan (though I actually do check it out a bit when the Olympics are on TV) but from the link you provided, it appears she was/is quite successful. Not sure why exactly, but I would've had to ask her if she knows Tonya Harding.

Is she still in "skating shape"?

Hello Sunray and Potatohead,,,

They speak French,,,
The Lebel is a French pistol.

'Nuff said?

Is she still in "skating shape"?

I don't know about skating shape,,,
But she is very pretty in person.

All of the ladies were pretty,,,
Maybe it's something in the water.

WOW! Sounds like it was a great day! Would have liked to have just been a fly on the way to watch. This is what the shooting sport is all about! Having fun! You did a great job!

Great story. They'll probably talk about it for years to come. I lived in Montreal for 4 years and some friends of ours came to visit us in Charleston this spring. The husband wanted to drive to NC for ACC basketball, but I offered up a day at the range and he jumped at the opportunity. He had so much fun that we went back before they left and his wife came with us.

Now we have new neighbors from the Netherlands. The teenage sons are in town visiting (they live back home with the ex-wife) so I took them and their father shooting last week. They liked it so much that we're going back Friday afternoon right before they head to the airport.

Living abroad for those years gave me a real appreciation for the gift that we (well most of us) have here in the US and I encourage us all to share it with new shooters.

Thanks for your time; it can be difficult to introduce newbies to the sport.
I hope they will find a good range at home and spread the good news.

Did Joannie help you clean the guns? Just curious. ;)

My one regret is that they may still feel that there's no organized clubs actually in Quebec and that they had to go to the US to shoot any guns.

That aside thanks for helping a few Canucks see the light. Sounds like you really went above and beyond and earned that added on bonus. Go buy more ammo like I'm sure he had in mind and smile.

As for the Lebel historical connection? Geez guys, get over it. Even if the French Canadians and the European French have not had a direct link in a few hundred years they still get a kick out of French developments and French products. And it made the old girl smile to shoot a gun which her parent or grandparent had let her shoot back when she was a young slip of a thing. So it's all a win regardless of any sketchy history.

Hello BCRider,,,

My one regret is that they may still feel that there's no organized clubs actually in Quebec and that they had to go to the US to shoot any guns.

I asked the older gentleman about this,,,
He wasn't exactly certain what was available for handgun shooting.

He said that handguns were regulated very tightly,,,
But he didn't know the details well enough to comment on them.

Are the handgun laws different between the provinces?

All I know is that they all seemed to have had a blast,,,
So I'll replace all of the ammo we used up,,,
And have a bit left over for another day.

P.S.
Did Joannie help you clean the guns?

Nope, although she probably would have if I had asked,,,
She seemed very nice and wasn't the one to mention her skating fame.

I did see the fierce competitive spirit in her though,,,
Her first ten shots were dismal and all over the target.

After I drew her a picture of how the sights/target should look,,,
She got very serious and her groups kept shrinking,,,
At 15 yards her final group was about 3 inches,,,
That took her about 60-70 rounds of ammo.

Gettin' hard to be a tease these days.
When Trudeau the Elder decided to jam French down the rest of Canada's throat(late 60's), the grade schools started teaching French. Parisian French. A guy from Montreal can barely understand a guy from Paris.

Keep in mind they could be swiped for powder residue at the airports. That could put a crimp in the travel plans.

Well done sir, you might have planted a seed that just might take root.

I have found most people who think guns are evil have never shot a gun. When they do actually go shooting the love it and want to go again. all of the sudden guns are not so evil after all.

Yes and no..... The law itself is federal so it SHOULD apply to all. But the provinces have control over how and where handguns and restricted rifles are shot and how and where one can transport their restricted firearms. And Quebec is one of the more anal provinces for setting up all manner of rules and road blocks. Ontario is either much the same as Quebec in this regard. The rest of the provinces have controls on how the ranges are set up and transport restrictions but nothing like those two.

Thanks for sharing. I am sure they will have fond memories of this for a long, long time. I bet that Lebel got the older gal who remembers shooting her grandfather's as a child reminiscing with the family - and years to come they will still be talking about the memorable day they spent with you.

Oh I agree... Sparking those fond memories of her childhood with pay dividends to her family for a very long time...

Thanks for all your kind words gentlemen,,,

Thanks for all your kind words gentlemen,,,
I appreciate your good thoughts.

This is how I try and counter the anti-gun folk,,,
I don't argue with them or engage them,,,
They are too entrenched in their ways.

But I take every opportunity I can,,,
To introduce new people to the sport of shooting.

I firmly believe that's the only way to keep our 2A freedoms.

So find a fence-sitter or a newbie,,,
And take them plinking.

It's one of the more satisfying things to do with your guns.
