For years I've been collecting brass - all calibers that I shoot that is. So the last few days I've been bored. I have several containers of .223 brass, which I've cleaned, annealed, FL sized, trimmed etc. it's all ready for loading. Today I started to sort it by head stamp.

I never realized there were so many different head stamps! Tonight I began separating it, putting similar head stamps together in baggies. Am I nuts? Does it really matter? I'm shooting for score, not plinking, not hunting. I'm using a savage bolt BVSS which typically groups around .3" when I do my part (at 100 meters). I'll be stretching out to 300 meters once I get them loaded. So, am I nuts sorting or am I just nuts?!

You are nuts!

But I am too.
That's Exactly the way I would do it too.

Much easier to track down a reloading problem on down the road if one crops up, and you aren't shooting mixed head-stamp brass.

You are no more nuts than I am but that's not saying much for you... lol

I put all my military brass in a bucket and use them unsorted for an AR-15.

I have several head stamps I like for shooting in a bolt action Howa 1500 in .223. I always keep that brass sorted and I process it carefully. IMO not so nuts when you are shooting for accuracy and points...

I do the same thing. I currently have 5 5gal buckets of .223/.556 brass besides the 10k or so cases that I am currently loading. I try to clean about 600 or so each night, and separate them by head stamp, and look for bad cases when I have the time.

Your nuts. If you are shooting for score you should have bought all brand new Lapua brass.and of course if it's not loaded on a Dillon then it will not be any good. You also must debur the flash hole, uniform the primer pockets, use match grade primers and all that other meticulous stuff.;)

For blasting ammo then I do not bother but for the bolt rifle I will sort it by headstamp. The MIL SPEC all gets loaded the same and not used in the bolt rifle though. You crazy??? Not really---bored is a possibility, or could it be OCD? but NOT crazy for sure.

Same here. I separate brass as soon as it makes it to the house. I have same head stamp lots that I keep together and load until it needs to be retired. Anything else that makes it home from the range is separated into coffee cans, bins, etc. by head stamp. That way when I need a new batch for bolt gun or AR, I can grab what most closely meets my needs. Pistol is the same way. Most other calibers where I shoot are not found in any significant quantity.

My wife tells me I use to many of her baggies. I also sort by head stamp and weigh sort within each head stamp. I like all my shots going into the same hole.

I learned long ago you have to buy your own baggies for reloading purposes.

The high-dollar Zip-Lock Freezer bags are way better then the ones the wife used to buy anyway!

Well, if you are nuts and have gone completely over board, your certainly far from being alone with such. I have always sorted by head stamp, and most of the time also by weight.

Not long ago, maybe a year or two back, I loaded up a couple boxes for hunting season, using an established load of course. But I decided to skip sorting by head stamp, time was tight, but not so tight that I didn't have the time to properly sort. When I went out to the range to get sighted in I got a big pressure surprise between head stamps. So much so, that some were running red line, while others were where I wanted them. At 100 yds. groups weren't bad at all, but 200 yds. and beyond was horrible. BTW, I went back home and started all over again with my logged load as per head stamp and weight, like I should have in the first place, which quickly resolved the issue.

I sort by head stamp for 3 reasons.
1. I feel like I can maybe "feel" a bad case from time to time when resizing and different heads stamps feel different. If it feels different I can chech it closer.
2. I've always done it that way
3. I want to.
None of the above make it right but that's the way I like to do it.

When you get done with that, and get bored again, you can sort them within head stamps for weight.

After I used enough Kathy just started buying me my own. Yes, I also like the 1 gallon zip loc freezer bags.

During the winters I don't get out to my rifle range as much so winters consist of cleaning brass and loading. Batch after batch run through the tumblers. I keep it by caliber and later separate by manufacturer.
