Of all the handguns I have, the 1911 platform seems to agree with me the most. I have a Ruger SR1911 Commander that I am quite accurate with and have recently purchased an RIA 1911 9mm gov't model. Now I have this terrible itch to buy a full size 1911 in 45AP. Aside from the fact that I really want the gun, which is an enough excuse to get one, will a government model be more superior in accuracy and would have more foot pound in energy with the longer barrel. I am hoping that it will replace my Glock 22 as my side arm when out in the woods or when hunting.

You will not be able to justify the purchase of a government model with what you currently have in your possession. If you want one, by all means buy it. I am somewhat of a 1911 junkie as well.

The standard barrel may seem more accurate because of the slightly longer sight radius, but the difference would be negligible. Same for foot pounds. The longer barrel would slightly increase bullet velocity which would increase foot pounds, but not enough to talk about it. There is no requirement to have a logical reason to buy a gun. I had six 1911"s and added the seventh this week.

Sounds like you've got 1911itis pretty bad. Best thing to do (at the risk of ruining your financial situation and/or any kind of a close, long term, personal relationship you might have with someone), is to give in to your cravings and get a full size 1911 in .45ACP. You'll thank yourself for it later.

Here's a couple of them to help fan the fire of your desire!

I'm looking at things the other way around. I own a SR1911 full size...and trying to rationalize buying the commander. Haha! Truthfully, I have no problem concealing the full size on me, and I'm by no means a large individual.

Have you considered a 10mm? A long-slide (6” barrel) 10mm 1911 e.g. Para LS Hunter sounds ideal for a woods/hunting 1911.

1911s....

If you want to select a traditional 1911a1 you have many top choices to pick from in 2014.
A few gun makers have rebates & offers too, so I wouldn't wait too long, ;) .
The Colt 1911a1 series 80 is always a good bet. I like the thick steel & even balance. Colts have many after market features & custom parts.

The newer Para USA line is well made. Para USA, which was called Para Ordinance is a firearm company from Canada that relocated to NC about 6 years ago. They offer hand-fit 1911s(which some gun experts say is ideal for a 1911a1). Para USAs can be hard to find but they are highly rated.
The firm is offering a $100.00 rebate too but check the website for details.

SIG's 1911s are popular too. They have a new .22LR kit for 1911a1s. You can add it to most SIG Sauer 1911 series pistols.
The Kahr/Auto Ord 1911a1 is also a good 1911. Author & tactics trainer Jeff Cooper used Auto Ord 1911s in the later years of his life. Auto Ord/Kahr Arms is offering a free pistol mag too.

As for magazines, many like the Wilson 47Ds the Tripp mags & the Chip McCormick styles. Many SWAT cops, armed professionals & target shooters use Wilson Combat 1911 magazines.
As for pistol sights, Id suggest the Trijicon HD series. Night sights are a good add-on for any carry or defense pistol.

I have always liked the standard "old style" 1911 GI type. The SR1911 I bought was for its look and reliability. I purcahsed the RIA with a $50 rebate, which I haven't received yet. The Remington R1 ahs a $75 rebate and the PAra has a $100 rebate. I have ben eyeing the Para Expert which with the rebate will cost me $493!

Thanks for the pcitures, now I am drooling...:uhoh:

To the point:

Firstly assuming all things are equal aside from barrel length-

More energy? Yup.
Will you notice? Questionable.
Will it be more accurate? Yup.

Again, all things equal including your personal reaction to the respective firearms.

Case in point.
Regardless of facts standing square in the face of my experience, I was never able to consistently outshoot my self predictably in two paradoxical scenarios in the Army:

I always shot our rattle trap 1911s more accurately than shiny new M-9s.

I almost always shot our M-21 rifles better than our M-24s.
Same ammo, same day, 4 different rifles and I just could not match the rest of my team's performance on the M-24s. On the M-21 however, I not only exceeded my M-24 firing but neared and in some cases equalled other team member's performance on the 24.

For some reason, I just shot the "lesser" of the two weapons better than their "on paper" betters.

Or

"Your mileage may vary"

But really, aside from economics - who among us needs to justify another 1911 purchase?

"Do you have enough?"
"I dunno, are there any left?"

OK, gentlemen. I have decided to buy the Colt 1911 Series 80 model. My LGS has one and I will trade my Ruger Gunsite scout and maybe another gun for it. I want to be sure that I get the "original" 1911 and something that will definitely last. Tuesday it will be.

Armybrat, nice R1!

That's good....

A Colt 1911a1 .45acp series 80 is a good buy. :D
I'd add Trijicon HD sights(night sights), www.Trijicon.com .
Some like the surface treatment; www.Mahovskysmetalife.com . It's highly rated & can protect the metal parts(barrel, magazines, frame, slide).
Gun writer & tactics instructor; Chuck Taylor states that Metalife is one of the best gun surfaces you can get.
As posted, a few extra Wilson Combat or Tripp magazines will help.
Get some FrogLube CLP too, ;) , www.Froglube.com .

I have considered other 1911's and have always favored the GI model the other models with, I think, too many add ons. If it it's a gov't model 1911' for me it has to be a Colt.

I want to get it NOW, but the LGS will be closed Sunday and Monday...so I will have to patiently and painfully wait....

Wow! I wasn't aware that Remington was even making pistols. I REALLY like that one ArmyBrat. six or seven years ago I went out looking for a retro 1911 (I wanted the spur hammer and regular grip safety) in commander length. I settled on a Rock Island even though it was lacking one of the other key things I wanted; the barrel bushing instead of a bull barrel. I like the Rock 1911 but the sights leave a lot to be desired. That R1 has it all.

I just watched a couple videos of the Big Green 1911s and I'm pretty impressed.

US Army MP anniversary; 2016.....

In 2016 the US Army will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Military Police. :D
I plan to get a new 1911a1 .45acp & get it treated with green and yellow for the MP colors. I might get "Of the Troops, For The Troops" engraved on it too.
The US Army Military Police started on Sept 26, 1941.

I might buy a new Auto Ord/Kahr WWII-US Army model, a Colt or a S-A. I may get custom US Army grips too but nothing tacky. The 1911a1 would just be a collector gun, not for carry or target shooting. I may buy a M9 or 92FS Beretta too but I may just use the older 1911a1 .45acp for the anniversary.
