Anyone own an ARES SCR ?

I'm also very curious about this rifle. I've seen a few for sale on GunBroker, but I don't know anyone who has fired one, let alone owns one.

My only thought about what's missing is this, if they make their own bolts, why not put a charging handle on the bolt, where it seems to belong?

I'm not sure, but from what I read one of the design "features" of the gun was to make it compatible with any standard AR upper -- of course using their proprietary bolt. I did think about your question too, and I hope on subsequent models, they come out with that.

Also on my wish list, I hope that once they feel its been fully field tested in the retail market, they'll start selling the lower/bolt combo separately, I could think of some existing uppers that could balance nicely with that design.

I found that they now offer the bolt release as an option for about $30 and also offer a monte carlo style stock for higher scope mounting, presumably to allow larger scopes.

I am very interested in getting one here in CT where standard AR15s are not allowed.

Pretty sure they take a standard AR upper. If so, I'll pretty much HAVE to get an SCR and then get an upper in .458 SOCOM. Not so that I can necessarily shoot .458 SOCOM, but just so that I can get some 10 round .458 SOCOM magazines. You know, the 30 round 5.56 mags are illegal here in CT. But if I were getting 10 round mags, I'm ok....

yes, they take any AR-15 upper. You must use their bolt carrier group.

they use AR-15 mags.

their trigger is a squashed AR trigger group, squashed vertically, as far as I can tell. It is proprietary.

a real find for those of us that hate the 'bullet button'

Having done more research, so far this is the only reason I don't own one. I've read the trigger is mediocre at best ("in excess of 10 pounds of pressure required to fire the gun"), and since its not a standard AR trigger one would have to work with what's there. While I've heard that any trigger can be improved, until I have actual confirmation from a gunsmith that they can make a clean breaking 3.5# trigger out of what's there, I won't get one. I've had enough time with bad triggers for one lifetime, I'm not going there anymore.

That said, for a rifle that is supposedly selling as fast as they can make them, I haven't heard/read many non-industry reviews of them.

Anyone out there own one?

So, generally, the advantages are...

AR style optics and mags in a relatively non-offensive, non-tacti-cool rifle.

Oh, I guess that's about it.

If I'm looking for a .223 with cheap hi-caps and versatile sighting options it seems like a pretty good set-up. Right until I note the lack of front sight mount that is. I like irons. Perhaps I missed something in that regard?

Todd.

One can buy just the lower which comes with a bolt carrier. I believe the lowers are $400. You then put any AR upper on it using your own bolt in their carrier. I need to sell off one of my ARs and buy one of these.

Wondering about front sites...

I found this kinda sweet configuration.
Very clever and slim package.

I have one comment about Ares Armor and unfortunately it probably has nothing to do with this rifle!

I had a totally un-related issue with an Ares BCG for an AR-15, so I called their customer service.

Absolutely fantastic service!! I've never gotten better or faster service from any firearms-related company. I don't wish any problems on you, but IF you ever have one, don't feel bashful about calling them. Even though they're in CA and their guys sound a little more like surfers than gun guys, don't let it fool you! First class service! :)

Now, back to the regularly scheduled thread... sorry if I stole the topic for a second but I thought it was worth it.

Ares Defense makes the Ares SCR rifle mentioned in the original post. Ares Armor is not the same company and is more known for their 80% lower receivers.

But too limiting. Forget that lil 5 rounder, and slap on a 50-round AR57 upper! I recall someone around here did this, and it looked seriously practical (and awesome). Get an Ash/Evil Dead shotgun scabbard and keep it on your back :D

There was a market, and they were smart enough to jump on the opportunity. It's different, kinda ugly, but unique in a way. As if a traditional hunting rifle mated with an AR to conceive this. Supply and demand will determine this rifle's fate as it does with everything else
