I just bought a Winchester Mod 85 Low wall at a Gun Show (I Know), in fairly good condition with 6 boxes of shells. I am not a novice to Gun Shows so I checked out the rifle as best as I could.

Now the rubb. When I went to chamber the 25/20 round it would not go but about half way in the chamber. Looking at the barrel the caliber marking says 25/20 SS ? No idea what that means ? So I pull off the Forestock and it is marked " REBORE 22580 J.P.P of the barrel. I did a wax cast of the chamber and it looked OK . Have not slugged the barrel yet but did mic. it at .254. Any ideas?

It's 25-20 Single Shot. Not the same cartridge as 25-20 Win.

The 25-20 Win Ammo is valuable stuff though. Hard to find and pricy when you do.

I believe Bertram makes brass for the 25-20 Single Shot. Check them or maybe Grafs Reloading for starters. Dies can be made if they are not in stock, try Hunnington or CH. If it proves too much trouble,I like oddballs, quote me a price.

Don't rechamber an original 25-20 SS!!!! There never were that many.
Sell it for mucho bucks, or shoot it. Do some googling, everything is available, even ammo if to want to pay.
Lot of my old friends who did BPC shooting liked it.

The 25-20 ss is a fun little cartridge. Keep it as is and enjoy something a bit different than the other kids in class have.

You can get brass and loaded ammo here http://www.captechintl.com/proddetail.php?prod=2520SS100pcs
Buffalo Arms has dies, so the only problem left is finding primers and powder. Most 25 caliber bullets from 60-80 grs work fine. You can find load data in older editions of Cartridges of the World, and Ideal reloading handbooks.

My neighbor has a Stevens 44 in 25-20, we had a lot of fun with it and the new built brass from Captec, until the firing pin broke..Local gunsmith says he can build a new pin, but we haven't had a chance to take the gun to him yet.
It really shot well with the bullets we cast from an old Ideal mould for the the 25-20 Winchester. Unique seemed to be the best powder for it, but in these times of tough supply it's best to got thru a good bit of data and see what you might be able to find as far as powder is concerned.

"...Now do I re-chamber it or sell it?..." Absolutely re-chamber. Then you'll have a $100 rifle vs the 2 grand plus it's worth now. snicker.
