Which .22 LR auto pistol would you all consider to be one of the best in regards to consistancy in function and accuracy and reasonably priced.

  • Ruger MKIII 22/25
  • S&W MP
  • Browning Buckmark
  • Walther

I vote for either the Mark III or Mark III 22/45 if accuracy is your thing.

The Ruger SR22 is a great little 22LR pistol as well.

From everything I've read, the Walther P22 and Sig Mosquito are to be avoided as they are very picky about ammo.

I love my MKIII 22/45 but the OEM trigger was TERRIBLE. I put in a Volquartsen trigger, sear and a Clark hammer bushing. Now the trigger is fantastic and mags drop free.

Ruger or Browning, whichever is on sale, or flip a coin. At your stage, either will fit the bill for shooting & hitting what you want.

Browning will be a bit easier to disassemble/reassemble -not that I bother with mine.

Ruger or Buckmark. Both are really good. Ruger is a little trickier to take-down, but has more aftermarket parts. Buckmark pretty good out of the box.

Another vote for Ruger or Browning.

Avoid the potmetal Umarex stuff (the "Walther" and "S&W").

I've got a Buck Mark that is stupendously boring because it will cut one ragged hole all day long until you get tired. It works great. More fun is my little Ruger SR22. It doesn't possess the quality, fit and finish of the Buck Mark, but it's a lot of fun in a little package. Mine is not ammo-picky at all. It shoots most anything.

At my club's 22 matches its mainly Ruger and Buckmark.
Interesting that many of the Rugers have had many (most?) parts replaced by aftermarket items.
They both shoot about the same.

Have both. I'd give the edge to the Browning based its unsurpassed ergonomics. That pistol feels like it's part of my hand!

I got a good deal on a Sig Mosquito... and wish I hadn't. The bad reviews about unreliability came true in my case. Isn't the Walther the same gun.

I don't own a Ruger 22 auto, but have heard nothing but good things about them.

For cheap plinking and general fun my Taurus PT22 (Beretta clone) is hard to beat.

If you're a 1911 fan, the Browning 1911-22 is a scaled down
to the .22, but overall looks like a full size
1911 4.6" bbl. & 4/7" Height and 1.1" wide

field strip is nearly the same as the 1911, the
slide lock/pin is utilized to fix the bARREL IN PLACE.

& IF YOU HAVE A HOLSTER FOR A 1911 THE 1911-22
SHOULD FIT GOOD ENOUGH.

A bit up market from the Mk III or Buckmark though.

TallBall, I'm one of the few others that love shooting the PT-22 as well.. I've got a Mk-II Ruger I've had since 1987, and it's just "too easy" to run at the range. I like "underdog" guns for the challenge, and was very pleasantly surprised when I picked up my secondhand Taurus back in 2012 (the gun is 1996 vintage.)

My Phoenix HP22A is a hoot, too..

ruger or browning.

ruger is easier to suppress
I 2nd this.
The Ruger 22/45 Lite is already threaded for a suppressor. It's also drilled and tapped and comes with Weaver rails if you want any sort of optics. This will most likely be my first purchase after moving from CA.

On the other side, it's really hard to go wrong with a Browning.

The P22 got a bad rap when it was first introduced because some people had ammo issues. Those have been fixed. Now, consider that i have owned one from the end of 2003 and have never had any issues with ammo and ive shot just about all of it.

Now i shoot it suppressed and it is a great gun.

since i own a few 22 pistols, my next venture into one will be a Ruger Mark II.

Buckmark. Nicest trigger from the factory, use any ammo, easier take down, quality feel. Unlike the Ruger, where I believe the barrel has the serial #, you can change barrels on the Browning.

My mkiii is a blast. My buckmark is too. Flip a coin...heads you win, tails you win.

I like the Ruger 22/45 target with the 4” barrel that I have. But, as others have said, it doesn’t have a match trigger. No experience with the Buckmark (but everyone seems to like them) or the Walther. The M&P is OK but the sights are not as precise as the Ruger. I have not tried the new Compact M&P.

There seems to be some love for the Ruger SR22 on this thread. I don’t like it because of the counterintuitive safety (frame mounted, up to fire, down for safe), and the DA/SA transition that results in the first round not impacting in the same place as others. It also seems to prefer high velocity ammo. I do like the firing pin block safety and the light weight. For an only gun for a person with small hands or a kit gun, it is OK. It does not appear to meet the OP's criteria for consistency in function.
