Thinking about getting a second gen g17. What are the biggest differences between 2nd and 3rd gen? Are the grips on the 2nd gen a little skinnier? Chamber support about the same?

You guys like one over the other ? Is 400 a fair price?

I bought a 3rd Gen G19 recently for $450 OTD and the gun was never shot. I think $400 is a bit high for a 2nd Gen G17, it's plenty old already.

The Gen 2 has checkering on the front and back of the grip.
The Gen 3 has finger grooves and a light rail.

In reality I like the grip on the Gen 2 better than the Gen 3... I don't think I would pay more than $350 and that's if the gun isn't all beat up. (all just my opinion of course)

Thanks for the feedback.

I never liked the grip on 3rd gen 19s and 17s. You need to hold and compare.

However, I really like the 4th Gen 17's feel.

Price - I'd try to get it down a bit. I got a new refurbished 2nd Gen 19 for 399. If it were a beater, I'd pay less.

Gen 2 has no rail underneath, and no finger grooves. Also, USUALLY Gen 2 G17's are "2-pin" frames (not always) whereas the Gen3's are all 3-pin frames (done for extra strength - not needed for 9mm but they use the same frames for G22's and it helped for .40 S&W).

Personally I like Gen2 over Gen3, though I'm thinking of selling my Gen2 to fund a Gen4. Particularly with the GSSF coupon that I usually don't even use I figure I can get ~$375-400 for my Gen2 and the GSSF price for the Gen4 new is only $425.

About this time last year, I grabbed a like new G17 for $400 from a guy who shot it once, then stored it away in a box. Absolutely one of my most favorite pistols I've ever owned, and I'm reminded again why I like the Gen2 series of 9mm offerings better than the other ones. The Gen4 is nice, but the reliability and overall quality differences between the 4's and the 2's are a no brainer for me. I also ordered new leather for it from Mitch Rosen and had him do the holster with a Gen2 mold, so it's very tight on the gun with no extra molding from a rail that's not there. It's basically my daily carry, and I love it. I'd grab another for $400 if it were in excellent condition.
