Out of all the ones I have shot, a K98 and that is an easy choice. Power, smooth action and easily handling. Great weapon.

This was an Irsraeli LB clone I built. So beautiful and by far my favorite firearm to shoot.

I just remembered that the British Commando's used the Winchester 74 .22lr with a silencer. I have one and I love shooting it.

I've shot several military arms, AR-15s, AR-10, M14, CETME, HK91, SKS, AK-M, Arisaka, 1903A1, M1 Carbine, Mauser, Mosin etc.

If I had to pick one to survive, CETME or HK91 ( same basic design ) would be my first choice. Accurate, good sights, simpler than gas operation and in a common calibre.

To shoot at a range? I'd say the Type 38. Low recoil, no muzzle blast and accurate.

?????????????

Tell again how do you pick just one?

I would have to say the Japanese arisaka family of firearms. I have owned mausers, springfields, enfields, arisakas, one type I rifle(cross between a carcano and an arisaka), SKS, M1 garand, mosin nagants, and a straight pull Hungarian mannlicher. of all of those my absolute favorite, ironically, is the type 44 arisaka. I say ironically because I didn't want it in the first place but it was part of a package deal and I really wanted the other rifle that came with it. it is, currently the most accurate milsurp I own. I love the cock on close action rifles, especially the mauser derivatives like the swedish mausers, US M1917, and arisakas. I love enfields and the first milsurp I ever bought, a savage made enfield number 4 will never leave my collection, but they're just not my favorite anymore.

M1 Garand. So elegantly simple and rugged, the basic mechanism still soldiers on today in the M14 in .308 and the Mini-14 in .223/7.62x39. Totally awesome.

Beautiful looking FAL.

My choice is the Mosin Nagant, the gun that beat the Nazis and did more to win WWII than any other rifle. Not a comfortable gun to shoulder or shoot but the sheer scale of what the Red Army accomplished on the Eastern Front cannot be denied.

M1 Garand

Take the riveting story of its development combined with what it accomplished in the field of battle and add the shear beauty of Walnut & Steel = #1 !

I have a K98 and an M1 Garand. I can't tell you which one is my favorite. They are both great rifles.

I own and regularly shoot, a Garand, a Mosin, a US rifle of 1917 AKA Enfield, a .30 M1 carbine, an 8mm K98 Mauser from 1938, an M4gery, AND - - - - - - a Swiss K31.
Of the lot, the K31 has easily and by FAR the best trigger. It and the the '17 Enfield are equal in accuracy and well better than any of the others. The quality of construction of the K 31 is FAR superior to any of the others.
My impressions of the lot - - -
The Mosin is functional, durable and quite simple. It has battlefield accuracy and excellent power. It is roughly made and not functionally elegant.
The Mauser is functional, durable, well made and of excellent design. Battlefield accuracy and excellent power.
The Garand is functional, durable fairly well made, moderate accuracy and excellent power.
M1 Carbine, is light, handy, durable with a horrible trigger, barely adequate power and is rather cute.
1917 Enfield is STRONG, has good sights, very accurate, a bit heavy and shoots a
powerful round.
The K 31 Swiss is elegantly designed, fairly strong, very accurate, has an EXCELLENT trigger, beautifully made and fires a powerful round.
As far as power is concerned, the 8mm Mauser, 30-06 Enfield, Garand & the 7.5X55 K 31 are roughly equal with the .30 M1 carbine, way behind.
So there's my opinion FWIW.

I like the M1 Garand for the sheer power in a semiauto rifle. The bad part is the cost of ammo roughly $1 a round. Compared to the Mosin , you can still buy 440 rd tin for $100plus shipping.

WW1-WW2? rifle? sticking to that.

without doubt..

the forerunner of all the modern military rifles of today..

the father or grand father of all our favorite "black rifles" we enjoy today..

the one and only..

the revolutionary..

StG44.

I wish you good luck in adding a real one to your collection. there's always the .22lr knock-off which has found favor with many. ...not the same though but neat and inexpensive to shoot.
