A question to all New York residents

It's near impossible to get a NYC carry permit, there are no gunstores other than a couple near 1PP, nor ranges other than the Police range or if the one in Nassau County is still open, Nassau County range, anyone who says you can get a "Carry Permit easily", has no idea what they are talking about. I had mine strictly because I carried a lot of cash late at night.
I only knew 2 other guys who actually had a NYC carry like I did. And I had a very large business. I still have my old permit in the gun safe as a memory of what a pain it the ass it was to get.
It took an entire year of FBI and local checks, a series of 3 interviews, and letters of character reference form professional people including Detectives, and an FBI agent.
Also my bank had to verify all of my financials ,along with a letter from my accountant. I am sure it didn't get easier than it was back then, so don't mislead the man. You have to leave the 5 Borough's in order to even FFL a shotgun to another state, I have done it recently so I know first hand.

I remember a gun shop on Hempstead Turnpike in Uniondale and I think the range on Lindberg Blvd. is open. Hell, when I was a kid that range was Mitchell Field an Air Force Base. The Nassau County PD did have a range at one time over near what was Lawrence Road Jr. High School close to a county dump. Man that was some years ago. :) A few years ago I know the gun shop was still there.

This is false. Apparently a lot has changed in the 20 years you have been gone.

Unrestricted carry is relatively easy to obtain once you have the pistol permit.
Generally you request it of the judge and offer to take more classes/safety etc.

As was said, the further you are from NYC the better.
All a lot of guys think the 2nd amendment is about is the right to carry a pistol and could care less about mag and rifle bans. Try firing your pistol at somebody and see if it don't ruin your life

GJ, that's just plain nasty. I was still manager of the place, but made the deposits and took money home, that's the drill. I didn't write the laws. But don't be under the impression for the OPS, sake that you can just apply and get a permit, because it isn't so.
If you can fit the criteria you get the license. I started out making 100 dollars a week, so stop assuming things. In 3 years I worked 7 days a week didn't take a day off in 4 years, and my boss from the first month told me that someday I would run his business. That's how things work here.
Reload you are indeed correct, there was one that opened and closed in Jamaica queens, But you needed a gun just to get there. Had to be late 70"s
I think it was Edelman's you are thinking of Reload.

Thank you for your responses, I have read the SAFE Act but hoped there were other avenues. It will be hard moving to a state where the freedoms I have now do not exist.

This is a very poignant, and telling, statement in it's truthfulness that the fundamental freedoms and rights in this nation are not uniformly adhered to from region to region.

I salute you for the simplicity and clarity of that statement.

The comments about not moving to NY may seem too simple and arrogant but they are comments to seriously consider. Whatever the gun laws are in NY right now, they will get worse. If having guns is at all important to you as a hobby or for protection, do not move to NY.

Of course if this move is necessary you could always move back.

NY is a very not gun friendly place. I don't care if the Senate is Republican now, they can still pass State laws, and they are passing state laws. About state laws, all you stupid gun owners who think we are safe for 2 years because of the Senate think again. Liberals go state by state, even city by city. They are really willing to fight hard and dirty for what they believe in. That is why they are winning, yeah I said it, liberals are winning and you are losing. End rant.

You said it. If the move is necessary because you have no current job or you will lose yours if you don't take the job in NY it's understandable.

My family has kept me in IL. I don't like it but it is what it is. I joined the fight several years ago and we have made it better here.

What County? The farthest would be Niagara or perhaps southern Erie. I know that there's a Wyoming County judge that takes forever and might put restrictions on them.

Clinton. Could throw a rock and hit Canada.

taking guns away from free people is only a symptom of a larger problem; taking
guns away from free people is the hardest thing for ANY guberment to do;

after that, everything else is cake.

Exactly. Stay out of that state if you value your right to keep and bear arms.

You are allowed to carry a gun in most of NY. While you can get a concealed carry permit outside of the NYC metro area, it is not valid in NYC.

There are always other employment options. Move to the Northern Virginia area if you work in STEM or sales. There are many jobs here and you get your full rights. The downside is that Maryland and DC are anti-rights jurisdictions, so you'll need to engineer it such that you don't have to step foot in either place.

I have lived in NY my entire life, (and family for 200 years before)..
Despite changing gun laws, I couldn't leave. Roots are too deep. Although the politics suck, there is more to look at...
Other than semi auto restrictions, most sporting rifles are totally unaffected if you already own them.
New Yorks previously and long existing concealed carry laws were in affect for about 70-80 years, (allowed with permit) where only now many states are allowing concealed permits even if owning a handgun was allowed without a permit. That is, many states without a state pistol permit law outright ban any concealed carry.
Clinton county is pretty rural...more so making it likely to be more permit friendly. I would call or visit the permit office and talk to them about it, and the best way for you to proceed... the tough part may be coming up with in county references.
New York is a great outdoorsmans state, with fantastic fishing and hunting opportunities, lots of public land and some of the countries greatest fishing opportunities. Good luck .

As I said, Clinton county is not gun friendly. I would say less gun friendly than NYC, because there are actually permits issued there. Most of the people in Clinton county get there unrestricted permits in neighboring Franklin county if they live/work/worship there. A friend mine travels to St. Lawrence county enough for work to qualify for their permit. I have pretty deep roots in NY as well. My family settled in the area in the 1700's, the border with Canada wasn't even properly determined yet. They became Americans by a line draw on a map. Still, my brother and I took the highway out of state when SAFE act was still a bill in committee.

I would say your reasoning makes the case, but not in New Yorks favor.

You say "if you already have them" about rifles. What about the next generation they don't deserve rights? Touting a May issue system that denied permits by county, political affiliation, or wealth isn't real convincing either.

"other than semi auto restrictions" oof that hurts. What's next, "other than smokeless powder restrictions" when they let you have muzzle-loaders only?

BTW, there are exactly ZERO states that outright ban concealed carry, technically/legally. There are a handful (8 now?) that are May Issue, which is IMO worse than no issue. New York is obviously one such state, with the addition of a May Issue permit simply to OWN a handgun. That's worse even than Cali!

If you like guns, you won't like New York City, even armored truck drivers have to hand in their weapons at shift's end. Unless they have a restrictive permit that allows them to drive to and from work with the gun locked in a steel box.
It's an entitlement in NYC, not a right. Target is the same, to and from the range only locked in a metal box or safe in the trunk, unloaded.

Thank you again for all the information and comments. I will have to weigh all the options before I make a decisions in the mean time I am taking my FAL out.

The Safe Act is a deterrent to residing in NY.
Also take into consideration that NY has been deemed to be a death spiral state.
Death spiral states are those where less than 50% of the households pay taxes
to support the more than 50% of households on assistance. Taxes in those states are practically punitive in nature. Those households on assistance are willing to vote for any and all government programs and school bonds because there is no financial burden on them. This allows the population centers (cities) to lord over the suburban and rural folks.
Beware of NY government.

Yes, it's easier to own a gun in CA than in NY. I bet in most of NYS it's easier to get a concealed pistol permit than most of CA. There is no waiting period in NY.

NY is a beautiful state once you get north of NYC. We certainly have more CCW permits (%) than NJ and probably Maryland.

I'm surprised no one mentioned snow. The Buffalo area just got hit with several feet of snow.

I was born in Michigan, but I've lived in New York State since the age of eight. I'm sixty now, so I guess I can say I'm a New Yorker. I have job and family roots that keep me here, but if I didn't already live here, I wouldn't move here. It's a beautiful state, but the politics are poisonous. The government panders to the rich and the poor, while the tax burden falls mostly on the middle class.

Andy Cuomo runs the state like Mussolini, doling out favors and punishments to keep his minions in line. The latest political game is "Who gets the casinos?" Answer: "Not you if your county didn't go to me in the last election." It's like that.

The one ray of hope for gun rights is that the Republicans took back the State Senate, mostly due to SAFE Act backlash from upstate. This should keep SAFE Act II out of the realm of possibility for the near future. Thank your lucky stars for bicameral legislatures.

I hope the OP gets the picture, it's a great place to visit but you don't want to live there. I miss the people, the water, the pizza, and all of the good food that unfortunately doesn't have the same taste in Florida. I always say it's the water, the water down here stinks "literally". But Guns are a no no, it's really that simple. Now if you are upstate, my buddy and the misses still spend half the year there and half down here. And he is a retired Marine, who taught the art of using the long rifle to snipers in various military service, he had many, many guns, but lives a couple hours north of NYC. He get's in more range time there, than here. There aren't many 1000 yard courses here. But that's the lay of the land, good luck in your future endeavors.

NYS does allow you to carry loaded to and from range with a target/hunting permit. I know...big shmeal...the irony is the big sign on the door of the Nassau county indoor range that says no one shall enter with a loaded firearm.
