How often do you do an inventory check?

Who's got time for inventory? If the 5 gallon bucket ain't full you ain't got enough. I agree with what rcmodel said. ( 5 gallon buckets of 44 mag and 45 LC are heavy )

I do not keep a strict inventory per se. After years of reloading, I have enough components to get me through.

When the price is right, I buy primers by the 5k or so.

Once a year or so, I place an order with Missouri Bullet. Depending on how much I shot last year (or what caliber adjustments I have made this year) , and what disposable income I have this year, dictates my order.

Powder, likewise. If I find a good price, I stock up.

Honestly, I may not live long enough to shoot up all of my components. But I attempt to replenish them when practical.

My shooting is not dictated by my ability to buy, but by my judgement regarding my current supplies...and biased by the current market availabiltiy/prices.

Going to the Gun Show this weekend. Not looking for anything specifically, but always looking for something I can't resist. :)

It's funny someone mentioned this, cause I'm probably one of most anal about inventory,

Gamestalker, I think it's safe to say you're one of the most anal handloaders here, period! Subtracting grains?!!:D

For me so far, my theory has just been to buy more no matter where I am in inventory.

I don't actually do any inventory checks. When out and about if I see something I use, especially at a good price, I just buy it. This past weekend I was in Cabela's and during my wandering I saw AA 2495 which I use. Tossed a few pounds n my cart. The same is true for all my components, see them and buy them. Eventually they get used.

Never, but I don't wait until I run low to order more. If I see what I use on sale, I buy and buy lots of it. This practice has never left me worried when a panic took place. I have always had enough to ride it out.

There's an app for that - sort of.

I used an Android app called Shooter's log. It's got a lot of potential because it tracks inventory, automatically adjusts levels based on reloading and shooting activity and maintains shooting notes and targets.

Unfortunately, there is NO WAY to back up and restore the data, even if you've copied the entire phone contents to your computer. I emailed the developer about this and received no response.

It also rounds up entries in thousandths to hundredths. For example, crimps of 0.474" and 0.468" are listed as 0.47. For that reason, it fails as a bench side reloading aid.

It's too bad because this app has so much potential and would be ideal for reloaders. Unfortunately, I think these are critical weaknesses make this app a waste of time to use because you'll eventually lose everything.

How often do you do an inventory check?

I guess whenever I read a thread about one :). Didn't want to go count bullets so I weighed what was left in any opened box of bullets and did some the math.

(weight in lbs of the open box) X 7000 / (weight of the bullet in gr) = How many are left in the box.

I think one day I hope to get as accurate as GS. My math currently indicates I have a half of a bullet in some of the boxes :)

I thought about doing something similar with the open containers of powder, but I resisted and just had a look inside to get a rough guess.

It didnt take very long with my meager stash. Boy, am I getting low on 45 bullets.

Thanks for the reminder!

My needs shift over time. So what I want on hand is different today than it was last month (not so much), last year or 10 years ago.

I buy powder and primers in somewhat large lots and when I'm needing more, will get with my friend/gun dealer/renter (I rent the store front for the gun store) and work up an order. Last order, my brother and I drove to Powder Valley to pick up the order. It was a good day trip for a couple of old guys.

To sit down and count out what is on the shelves or in the storage boxes, not gonna happen. What's on the shelf is replaced from the storage boxes and I get a quick idea of where my supply stands.

I check my supplies every winter when it is too cold to do anything else and I get cabin fever. I then start getting on-line and spending my arse off! Hate it, but that's the way I roll.......
