I've got an old Remington 512 tube fed, bolt action, .22 that I want to put a scope on. The owners manual, online, says the receiver is grooved. Well, mine is not. My question is: should I look into having dovetail grooves machined into the receiver or having 4 holes drilled and tapped into the receiver for 2 - 2 holed weaver bases? Approx. how much would I be looking to spend for each option? As always, any input is appreciated.

Drill & tap it.

I don't have a clue what gunsmith prices are in your area.
But it shouldn't be an awful lot if you can find a small mom & pop shop.

On a .22 you can epoxy the mounts on. Cheap and reversible. Loctite Black Max is one choice. Go to the Rimfire Central website for more details.
