Fred Grimm says overwhelming sales swamped the system. What sounds bad to him sounds good to me! :D

It was a few minutes before 5 a.m and in the pre-dawn darkness, it was easy to see the crucial flaw in the federal gun purchase background check system.

A mighty throng of Black Friday shoppers wrapped around the Bass Pro Shops superstore in Dania Beach, many of them clutching mailers advertising deals worth getting out of bed in the middle of a 57-degree night and waiting in line until the doors of big box store opened at 5 a.m.

No small part of the allure were four pages in the mailer hyping Black Friday bargains for 29 different pistols and rifles and shotguns.

yep, happened here in Pennsylvania at two of the places I frequent. One place lost their PICS service all day Black Friday. They said they had just over 500 firearms sold, and only 30 left the store. All the others were put in "layaway" until the system came back up. I guess I got lucky. Bought my wife and my brother each a Glock 27, and was in and out in 25 minutes. An hour later is when the system crashed.

Does this mean I can stop reading articles on all those poor gun companies with slumping sales?

It's rumored that many retailers turn the most profits or for some, their first profits of the year on black Friday. They go into the "black".

Hence the term black Friday.

"The more you know".

P.S. I think I have read this story almost every year since '08-'09.

I love it when people vote with their $$$ and it has effects that the media can notice!

CNN continues the story. The Miami Herald cut off (404) the rest of Fred's tale of woe! :D

(CNN) -- The busiest shopping day of the year also saw a major boom for gun sales, with the federal background check system setting a record of more than 175,000 background checks Friday, according to the FBI.

The staggering number of checks -- an average of almost three per second, nearly three times the daily average -- falls on the shoulders of 600 FBI and contract call center employees who will endure 17-hour workdays in an attempt to complete the background reviews in three business days, as required by law, FBI spokesman Stephen Fischer said.

Colorado does their own background checks and when I bought my "new" 1891 Argentine Mauser on Friday afternoon there were 160 some folks in line ahead of me for background checks. It took about 40 minutes for mine to clear.

I let my six year old try on a Cricket at a store in Tennessee. The guy behind the counter told me we'd wait a couple of hours for the NICS check if we bought it.

Surprised me that he handed us the rifle, then turned away from us. I had to wait a minute or three to return it to him. They were very busy with at least 20 folks filling out 4473s. Looked like a good day for them. Good day for us as well leaving the store with 2 lbs of Unique and one lb of CFE Pistol.

Ooohh ... wouldn't have much trouble getting out of bed on a warm night such as that ...

On topic, we had some screaming deals locally; the only problem was that those retailers didn't have enough of their advertised specials in stock.

Don’t forget that those numbers are actually low since sales to CCW holders in (I think) about 35 states don’t get an NICS check called in.

Was thinking the same thing. 57 degrees lol, so they got to wear their shorts and tshirts in that nice heat wave.

75 degrees right now in SoFla. And Twiki is correct. 35 states don't have to call in. This was an enormous 2A win on Black Friday.

We've turned a big corner on guns for the good. Now, to beat off the Hillary, or whoever challenges in 2016, and a real positive future emerges for the RKBA.
