In the market for a Browning Hi power. Considerations for selecting a used one.

Here are some pictures I stole from arfcom. This is a Don Williams gun from about four years ago. I love the "no frills" clean look but wouldn't mind seeing the stippling go a bit farther up the back strap.

A .40S&W built by 10 Ring out of San Antonio. His beavertail looks a little longer and flatter than those of other builders.

Lastly, a hard chromed example from Novak. Another very clean gun. I think the only thing I'd change would be the non-ambi safety.

USBP379 excellent Hi Powers... I have never gone with a beavertail on a BHP. I go back and forth on if I like it or not.

Me too. I'd think the "no bite" hammer mod would probably take care of most of the need for a beavertail.

Appears to be a Ted Yost thumb safety...they are not sold as a part...

It is a Yost thumb safety! Hierloom does excellent work. Almost all of the top smiths who make custom BHP safeties by welding up the factory ones do not sell them individually.

More Yost work.

Careful buying surplus if you want a real FN Hi-power. There are a lot of FEG pistols showing up on the used market (many from Israel) with dubious markings.

FEG made a good clone (I have three of them) but if you want an FN, make sure its not a parked-over 'no markings' gun.

My dream HP is a Novak's HRT model. Someday. ;) Have to get myself a real FN before I go down that road.

An NP3 gun.

Here's a retro build. I used to (still do actually) love the clean lines of the S&W sight install.

I have a Mk III Hi Power in .40 S&W. The pistol has been 'adjusted' by adding a Bar-Sto barrel, Cylinder & Slide hammer, sear and trigger, LPA sights front & rear & of course the removal of the accursed magazine disconnect. The result is an accurate, reliable pistol with a clean crisp 4# trigger. The pistol is a joy to shoot, one of the few real keepers I own.

Another Heirloom Precision HP.
