I am setting up a brand new RCBS Summit press with Redding competition dies for 308 using a .336 bushing.

After getting the neck sizer setup I am getting 8 thousands of runnout on the case neck on my once fired cases. Before they are sized at most they have 1.5 thousands so it is the neck sizing process that is doing it. I have tried using the body sizer afterwards and it changes nothing. After neck sizing I tried turning the case 90 degrees and no luck with that either.

What am I doing wrong??

Thanks, Sammy

If the dies do not have a carbide expander button, and you are using good quality brass, I would give the dies a hard look.

This die does not have the expander ball type like most die sets. The brass is Lake City in excellent condition. They are almost perfectly concentric but as soon as neck sized they have 6-11 thousands of runnout.

Try flipping the bushing over, or trying a different one. If that doesn't help, call Redding.

It could also be in the shell holder or even the press. I would try a different shell holder to see if that made any difference.

The bushings work when they are not tightened into their cavities. They sort of have to float to self center on the case neck. I'm not sure what that plug on the top of the die is called which caps off the bushing cavity, but what I do is run it in until it stops on the bushing, and then back it off 1/4 to 1/2 turn, and then snug the lock nut.

Perhaps yours is all snugged down too tightly on the bushing?

Redding Reloading Bushings.

Go to Redding tech line. Sizing the neck down to much, more than .008" in one operation may cause runout. Size in 2 steps using 2 bushings. http://www.redding-reloading.com/tech-line-a-tips-faqs I use the Redding S FL bushing die. Have not measured runout. The Redding bushing should have the stamped size marking down towards the case mouth. Use a tiny bit of lube on the outside of the neck, even with the coated titanium bushings.

Wow, thanks for the great ideas guys. I will get back to you all when I have something to report.

How about you try loosening all the lock rings.

Then run a case up in the die, wiggle all the threads around, and lock all the lock nuts again.

You may have tightened something down off-center in the threads and it is holding the die out of alignment with the press ram.

Lots of wiggle room in 7/8"x14 press threads if a lock ring is holding it off center with the ram.
