Have you ever needed your carry gun?

Not on a human target.

6 weeks ago, on the way to work at 5:30 in the morning on a country road, encountered a deer laying in a "bedding" position in the middle of the road, still alive but in a bad way. Couldn'tr get up. Pulled around her, hit the 4-ways, told my wife to plug her ears and exited the vehicle. Walked back to the deer and angled for a safe backdrop, drew and fired, to end her suffering. Put the gun in my coat pocket and started flagging the car that was approaching, since I was wearing a dark coat and didn't want to get hit dragging the deer off the road.
The back side of the light bar on top of the squad lit up, and the sheriff's deputy asked if that was the car hit deer hit he got a call on. Told him I assumed it was, he asked if it was dead. Told him "It is now". Told him I was a permit holder, told him where the gun was, where the permit was. He asked if I wanted the deer, else he would call someone on "the list" that would make use of it. Told him to go to the list. I asked him if he needed anything from me. he replies, "Like....?" I dunno, the permit, my DL, my name...
Nope, says he. You told me where the gun was, told me you had a permit, it's not in your hands, you obviously know how to use it, nope, don't need anything. Couldn't believe he hadn't seen the muzzle flash. Nope, he says, must have been turning on the lights...
I bade him a good day, and off I went.
Was a little surprised at his lack of SA, trust, and attention to detail, but I suppose he was thinking..."Great! Deer is dead, I didn't discharge a round, so no paperwork, and I'll get overtime waiting for somebody to come get this deer..."

My takeaway....the XDS needs night sights, and that issue has been rectified. All I could see was black.

Do you expect LEOs to require people identify themselves and provide a license simply because they have a gun? I still don't see how that is any different than expecting them to want to see your driver license every time you operate a motor vehicle on a public road. Well, except that only one of those is a Constitutionally protected natural Right

I live in a nice part of town...surrounded by really crappy parts of town. If strangers come to my door (and obviously not girl scouts, or recognized neighbors) - I answer the door with my carry piece in my hand behind my back. If I ride the Metro rail at any time other than rush hour, it is full of homeless and thugs. I am more vigilant at that time.

But I hope to never have to draw.

In a rest area on I65 in my pickup 2:00a.m. , a guy wanted a ride and wouldn't take no for an answer. I had my drivers side window down a little and he tried to break the window with his hands, until he noticed the Kimber 1911 pointed at his face. He made a quick retreat. I still believe I would have been killed, if not for my carry pistol.

The first time was many years ago (1974?). I was taking the garbage can to the curb.

The neighbors were playing Frisbee with their two Dobermans and the Frisbee came in my direction. That let the two dogs see me and they decided that fetching me would be more fun that the Frisbee.

Garbage can was in my left hand (and not by accident) and the 1911 was on my right hip. Right hip was facing away from the neighbors. I stopped walking, swept the jacket aside and put my hand on the grip.

All of a sudden the owners became very interesting in calling their dogs off.

I've done that sort of thing several times down the years, works very well. I even did it one time when I wasn't armed. Worked then too.

I've taken the use of the pistol beyond that level. I've drawn but not fired a couple of times. Once was justified, once was pure stupid on my part.

I've also fired them in defense. I was wonderful to be armed for each use, but especially when I had to fire.

The only way to have one when you really need it is to have it on you at all times.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop anyone? It's a lot better than getting charged for brandishing a weapon.

yes

Once to dispatch a wounded deer I had just hit.

Then a second time to confront a street punk who had just punched my wife. No shots fired.

Sorry it was a crappy comedy/kid's movie about a mall cop that rode around on a segway. He taught his trainees to bring their hand to their right hip as if to draw their handgun (which they obviously didn't have since they were mall cops). Pardon the digression.

About 25 years ago, a pair of my neighbors were in a "tempermental" relationship. When He drank, he tended to use his hands and She would reply using a knife. They also were rather poor at paying their bills and had already lost their LL phone service.

After one such fight, She came over to use my phone to call the locals. Without thinking, I had not shut the inside door and just had the screen door hooked shut. While I'm on the phone to the cops, He rattles the door so hard the hook dislodges and He comes inside. I had my .380 (biggest caliber I had then) pointed at His chest and would not have hesitated to fire IF He had come closer as He was about 4" taller and 50 lbs. heavier.

Fortunately, He wasn't so drunk that He didn't realize I was pointing the gun at Him and He turned and left. It still took the cops 10 minutes to arrive on scene.

They both apologized the next day for getting me involved in their problems.

As Illinois just got CC, I haven't gone for the classes yet. But this would probably be the one I carry, having the most familiarity with it and having had it the longest of all my guns.

i was going to the local hardware store one day and I had been trying to get over a lane to turn left for the last 3 blocks. the guy in the truck next to me would slow down when I would slow down to get behind him, then he would speed up when I would try to pass him. after about 3-4 times of this I realized he was doing it on purpose and by this time he had several cars behind him. we were on a 4 lane road with a turning lane and its 45 mph speed limit. I had slowed down to about 20 and sped up to about 50.

I finally just floor boarded my car and got in front of him then got in the turning lane immediately. he honked started hanging out his window flipping me off and cursing at me. I just ignored him and went to the hardware store and I pulled in my spot. I should've been watching, but apparently he turned around and pulled in kinda behind me to where I couldn't back out and I couldn't pull forward. I had been driving with my window down and as he approached me he started yelling and cursing me like a crazy idiot. he told me he was about to put me in the ground.

as soon as I saw him pull in behind me I got my 1911 in my hand in my lap. when he got about 5 foot from my window and told me he was going to put me in the ground I slipped the barrel up over the top of my window in view and clicked the safety off. his eyes got as big as saucers and he stopped in his tracks. he turned around and almost ran to his truck.

he looked like he had just got out of prison with prison tats all over his arms and tear drops on his face.

after he left I regained composure and went into the hardware store and a guy came up behind me and said he saw the whole thing and said he couldn't believe how crazy that guy was.

I was armed with a Glock17 (one of the first into the country, given to me by Gaston Glock personally in honor of my former black-ops experiences) and a Rem870P 14" bbl folder loaded with 000 magnums. On this particular fateful day my team was assigned to patrol Sector Zebra-1, the mall. It was an uneventful day, until the unthinkable happened…It was about 8:45PM, and the mall was closing and nearly empty. Me and my ’shadow’ were sweeping quadrant 069E, the mall arcade, a known hotspot for Asian Gangs and assorted thugs. The arcade was located at the far east end of the mall, next to the movie theater and the orange julius.I smelled trouble, and couldn’t spot any movement from the arcade, which was unusual due to the presence of a new Mortal Compact arcade game. Those Asians Gangs love Mortal Combat.I went to “condition red,” and ...

Several things in the distant past have helped my to decide that I have been relying on luck alone, for far too long. The two incidents I'm referring to are;

About 1990, I was enroute from the GM Corvette plant in Bowling Green, Ky to the east coast with 12 new Corvettes; about 20 or 30 miles west of Columbus, Ohio, and heading east on I-70, I had exited at the London exit, and made a left into a McDonald's that had as very large truck parking lot; when you're driving a 75 ft vehicle, with 6 ft of new Corvette sticking out past your windshield, and another one sticking out 4 feet beyond the back end of the carrier, you really need to "think ahead" and try to park in places that you're familiar with; I stopped at this place all the time, so I always drove all the way to the back of then lot, made a 180 turn to the left, and carefully pulled through empty parking spaces until I got back to the front, then started backing up to get my tractor in a straight line with my trailer to park.

As I was backing up, there was a big California Peterbuilt coming in the driveway at about 3 times reasonable speed, then made as fast left turn, and proceeded to drive right behind my car carrier while I was still backing up; I grabbed my CB mike, made the fool in the Peterbuilt aware of my extreme "displeasure", and called him an "unflattering name". As I was getting my truck shut down, and was about to climb out, here comes the TWO guys from the Peterbuilt, the driver swinging a ball bat over his head, and telling me of his intention to "beat me to death" with his bat!

At this point, I had to make a very quick decision; If I get out unarmed, I'm dead; if I get out with my S&W model 66, .357, I can probably "discourage" bat-boy, but I'm very likely to lose my job, as we were NOT allowed to carry a weapon; I'm thinking.....and I rolled my window back down, said, "please come a little closer"; (bat-boy was about 15 ft away, and I wanted him about 8 or 10; ) when he got to maybe 10 ft, I started slowly opening my door, and as I started to climb out, pistol in right hand, I said to "bat-boy", "you should never bring a stick to a gun fight"! Both guys see the gun at the same time, plus now a woman with them had came up, she screams....."he's got a gun".....yeah, I had a gun alright, but I SURE didn't want to fire it and "get fired"! All three made a hasty retreat to the Peterbuilt, and I went into McDonald's.

As I'm about to come back out a few minutes later, I notice a pay phone by the back door; and had a sudden idea.....called the Franklin County Sheriff, ask, "can a ball bat be considered to be a deadly weapon"? dispatcher: "it sure can! I said, meet me right across the road at the truck stop; a Deputy was there within 5 minutes; I asked if I could swear out a warrant against "bat-boy"; Deputy says, yes you can, but you'll have to go too and it will cost you maybe two hours of your time; OR......if you're in a hurry, I'll go get "bat-boy" right now, arrest him and cuff him, and by the time he gets back to his truck TOMORROW, you'll be half way to New Jersey!

As I was pulling out to get back on the Interstate, "bat-boy", was being "assisted" into the back seat of the Deputy's car, hands cuffed behind him! (And no shots were fired! ) I'm now thinking......I seriously doubt if such a bad situation as that will "turn out" as well, very many times. (So don't count on it. )

I learned many things from that potentially BAD situation; I needed to get much better "prepared"; At that point in time, I not only didn't have a CC permit, they weren't even available in Ohio then; and even if I did have a permit, I still wasn't allowed to have a weapon in my truck or on company property.

Maybe 10 years later, I'm unloading a whole load of Jaguars in downtown Louisville, KY at midnight, (in a BAD neighborhood ) as I was returning to my truck from driving a unit inside the fenced in lot, I see two black guys climbing out of my cab, one carrying my suitcase! I'm like 20 feet away, poor light; I have exactly NOTHING in my hands! But I'm MAD AS HELL! As I started towards my truck, (thinking to grab my tie-down bar ), the perp without my suitcase whips out a piece, and starts shooting at me! I couldn't believe it! from the sound, it HAD to be a .22, possibly with blanks, or maybe the perp is just a really bad shot? I should have beat a hasty retreat.......I didn't because.....again....I was Mad as hell! I ran towards the truck, the perps ran down an alley. I grabbed my bar and was 100 ft down a totally DARK alley, starting to get winded, and I suddenly looked at my hand, which is white, and I can't even see my white hand from a foot away! I'm thinking......these guys may as well be invisible! If I can't see me, I sure can't see them! Then I'm thinking.......what is in my suitcase? a few sets of shorts and Tee shirts, pair of work pants, ........I decided to finish unloading my truck and get on to my next stop at Emminence, KY, about 30 miles NE of Louisville; on the way back to the interstate, I had to go right past the main Louisville PD, so I stopped, went in, told them where I had been, what happened, etc etc; The cops look at each other, then at me, said, "son, do you realize what neighborhood you were in! ME: "sure, I unload there 4 or 5 times a month; Cop says.... "You better start bringing a couple of armed guards with you, or come in the day time"!

Looking back, I'm thinking now, "how did I ever survive for 40 years, unarmed, bad neighborhoods, middle of the night......I was not only lucky ......I was stupid! (and VERY "unprepared", with NO "plan"! ) Which is dumb! I now have a plan, and I'm now getting "prepared". Now that you've read this, you already know what NOT to do! DO NOT "get mad"! Getting mad is likely to get you DEAD! Do as much of your thinking as possible, ahead of time. If you're ever confronted with a weapon, run! The other way! Don't try to be a hero; (you'll end up being a dead dummy! ) Keep your wits about you, and THINK!
In the last 2 or 3 years, I've read a LOT; I've become very familiar with many of the top gun writers and trainers; My favorite of all.....is Massad Ayoob; I think Ayoob is a very "steady", no BS kind of guy; The next big step in my plan is scheduled for this coming Thursday; I'm having a cataract removed from my left eye, and will shortly be able to see with both eyes; That should improve my shooting quite a bit.

If you count at home/ in the house ... twice. "On the street" ... never.

Once before Wisconsin had CCW, but the dog i was walking solved the problem for me. The two guys that I thought were about to rob me did an about face when they saw the dog.

Another time while my daughter and I were walking her dog I thought we were about to be robbed, again the dog solved the problem. I did have a CCW gun with me, but I guess the robbers did not want to tangle with the dog.

In the course of military duties, yes.

Stateside with a privately owned firearm I have been fortunate enough not needing to pull the trigger. The closest I come is when some neighborhood strays run my way in a not so playful manner.

Really don't want to get off the OP's topic about whether you've ever used it, but no, I really don't expect that we should have to, but considering I just told the officer I discharged my firearm within sight/sound range of him, and HE SAW NOTHING, it's 5:30 in the morning and pitch black outside, and considering I'd never met the man, I would have expected a little more formal exchange. It was kind of refreshing, but I'd say unexpected all things considered.

Conversely...you discharged you firearm in the pitch black outside in front of a police cruiser without realizing it?

I stopped at A park and went in to use the restroom. It was early and only one other person was in the park. I had my carry gun in an inside the pants holster. by nesesity I was sitting there with the gun in my hand when the guy walked in and jerked the door hard enough to break the little hook lock on the door. When he saw me there with A gun in hand his jaw dropped and he stammered an apology. Then ran out. There were 2 other stales open and he watched me go in. there was no mistake. I still laugh about that.

Not me, but my son. Twice in 2 months and the last one just an hour ago

My son called me from his college town just a bit ago. He's over 21 with a CCL, CC's where he legally can when he goes out at night. Yes, it's that kind of town.

He was at the C-mart gassing up, head on the swivel he knows to have thanks to his Krav Maga training. He spotted a lurker checking him out, hoodie up and pulled low over his face, baggy pants cinched up tightish, high top sneakers tied up, the whole look going but strapped tight into the banger duds. The guy takes his hands out of his pants pockets, and starts across the lot towards my son. On the way he touches his right hoodie pocket and slides both hands into the hoodie pockets. He rounded the front of my son's vehicle and started to remove his right hand from the hoodie pocket. From the time the wrist to the kuckles emerged from the hoodie pocket my son had his piece out and was on center mass. Instantly the guy pulled both hands out of his hoodie, empty--thank God, put them up and backed up. "Hey man, I ain't startin' no ****! I just gonna ask for a couple bucks is all, man!" My son explained to him what the guy had done to cause him to throw down on him, apologized and gave him two dollars.

When he called me to tell me what had happened, his voice was still shaking from the adrenalin surge. Thing is, he still wasn't sure the guy hadn't intended to rob him or worse. Just my son was ever so slightly ahead of him the whole way if so.

About 2 months ago my wife and children had gone to visit him, they went out to supper. On the way back home they noticed two specimens walking on the street in the opposite direction. They passed the guys, pulled into their driveway and were sitting there yucking it up and talking when suddenly another one of my kids called out, "bogeys at six". My CCL son instantly rolled out of the car and came face to face with one of the two guys on his side of the car, the other had gone up the other side. As he rolled out of the car he extracted his piece but kept it behind his back, though going into the ready position with "the look" in his eyes. Those two guys threw their hands up and backed away, too, but didn't say anything. When they backed to the street, they just turned and non-chalantly rooster-walked away in the direction they'd been going originally.

When I heard about that one, I atta-boyed him for being ready once the alarm was given but also gave him hell for being initially distracted and not keeping the swivel active. My child who WAS paying attention and gave the alarm got lots of thumbs up for being the one who basically saved the day.

No question in their minds: that time they were about to be carjacked, robbed or worse.

Yes, I've thought the same thing: get the hell out of that town or move to another part of it. The whole town is that way. The only way would be to quit college and move away, one semester short of completion. Probably isn't going to happen. Just keep the piece on him is the best solution.

The moral of the story is be aware of your surroundings, understand the laws of the jungle, and be thinking constantly.

So close to it one evening leaving work. I park across the street.
Did not draw. I think body language and "this is NOT the night you want to mess with me" was enough.
It had been a really bad day at work and he was close to receiving the brunt of my "less than Christian" attitude.

I've been glad...very glad, he stopped.
