Good day fellow high roaders,
I am thinking about saving a Mauser HSc form a my LGS for $280. It has rust on both sidesof the slide. It does not have the original grips instead it has yellow plastic grips. It is a late war production #920000 all matching numbers, Eagle / Waa 135 and Eagle N proofed, one magazine. My concern is $280 too much. I talked them down from $325 and put it on layaway, I have the option to not get it. I am familiar with the design having a HK Mod4. So what is your thought, run from a rusty gun missing the original grips. but is in working condition. The rust is rather substantial not just surface rust. On the left side it covers half of the letter stamping.
 
Personally, I would leave it at the LGS.
With luck, patience & persistence, you can find a better specimen for less.
Earlier this year I bought a matching 1942 HSc with original grips, two correct magazines in a repaired holster.
Mine has the more common commercial proofs with no military acceptance proofs anywhere.
The bluing is very good with wear on the high spots & some very light pitting.
I paid $218 out the door.
 
That sounds like a lot for a gun that was abused. I would wait and get a decent one.

Well, I'd take it and restore it but I'm weird that way about that model. Clean it up, have the barrel checked by a good gunsmith and if it's safe to shoot, I'd go for it. I'd probably even pay Turnbull to do the blue _right_.

If they work for you, it's still one of the finest .32's ever made.
 
If it were just a commercial model I would restore it, but I think it probably should stay the way it is given its history. I'd find another one for a shooter.
 
Thank you for your thoughts, I looked at it again last night I don’t see any import markings, could be a war bring back? I think it will clean up but the rust has damaged the finish. I did find some wood grips but they are pricy.
Oldironsights I would love to find any HSc for $218 OTD. I have been looking in Ohio for some time. I have seen them at OGCA for $500+. I have not seen them at local gun shows.
I will post some pics if I get it.

Hard to say without seeing how much rust is on the gun so can't really know if it will clean up halfway decently. Still a wartime HSc for under $300 is an interesting proposition. If it were mine I would try using some Flitz (sparingly applied and used lightly), on the rusted areas. I have used it for many years with great success removing rust and built-up residue on guns without any harm to the original finish, on both blued and plated surfaces.
 
Just bought a WW2 Hsc, serial 9**,***, but has a regular finish, not the rare phosphate.

Really good condition with numerous tiny 'dots' of corrosion.
Sometimes the slide needs to be pushed the last 1/4 to close and operate.
The off-duty detective sold it for $500 with two aftermarket magazines.

Don't remove the right grip, or the trigger bar and tiny retainer piece might fly off when barely grazed with an oily patch! Luckily those two parts landed on the wooden floor.
Any idea whether the layaway gun will function? Also, it is Very difficult to locate a firing pin (not Brownell's, Numerich etc) if it is broken from lots of dry firing.
 
You could get it and make up stories about the rust being caused by the blood of the SS officer who did not need it any more.

Otherwise, I would rather pay more for something nicer.
