Remington R1 or Ruger SR? Both in stainless and about the same price. I plan to buy one in the next couple of days as a Christmas present to me. My wife says I'm selfish but hey it's a 1911. I've heard good and bad about both.

I say Ruger only because I don't trust Remington on any level. Plus I have a Ruger 1911 (4.25") that is a good gun.

I second the Ruger. I really like mine (5") and I think it's hard to beat thier customer service should something go wrong.

I know a couple of Rem owners who shoot theirs a lot and have had zero trouble. However, I would probably pick the Ruger based on customer service.

I recently bought the Ruger in commander length. I am way pleased with it. Completely reliable, very accurate and seems well put together and finished. Hard to beat for the price.

I have a blued Remington R-1 1911 that I like very, very much. However, if I could buy a Ruger SR1911 for the same price, I would do so without hesitation.

I would also go with the Ruger over the Remington. Build quality is very good with both pistols but I think Ruger has the better customer service should the need arise.

in a side by side, the ruger I have is a bit better on fit and finish. The Cust service is in a differant catagory all together over Rem.

The Ruger I have was purchased as my first entry level 1911. I have been pleasantly surprised at just how high the bar is with this pistol and have been hard pressed to find a comparison in its price range.

I bought one of the Remingtons shortly after they came out. Nice build quality and functioned flawlessly. The accuracy however, just wasn't as good as I liked.

Don't know about Ruger, but they they are a company that stands by their products.
I love my LC9s and LCR made by Ruger.

Ruger would be my choice. I have the Commander version and would not hesitate to buy another. If I can find a good deal on a used full size I would seriously think about buying it. Or maybe a new one as they are going for $700 or a little less in my area.

I will second this. I put nearly 250 rounds of ball and hollowpoint down range yesterday in my SR1911 CMD's first trip to the range. No FTF, FTF, and very accurate. Great trigger as well.

Having had both Ruger Commander and Govt models I still have a Remington better gun had problems with Rugers. Full size safety failed had to re weld it. Commander wouldn't shoot to poi at all. Really liked pistols but terrible triggers had to do trigger job on both. I will stick to my Kimbers zero problems with all 3 Sig makes good as well still have C3. I turned my Remington into a full blown custom gun just cause. But before that it was a better pistol than either Ruger. I have had good luck with both companies CS on repairs. I like Rugers still own several just the 1911 not on par with lot of others . I own several 1911 pistols so am not new to platform.
