I got a 20% off coupon today in their email and though OH BOY!...

...til I read the fine print...

Excludes firearms, ammunition..

Ok. Fine, maybe some cleaning kits and a case?

Excludes sale items..which is pretty much 70% of the sporting goods deparment right now.

Not only that, but a long list of name brands are also excluded too, on sale or not.

Maybe it's just me but I feel like the 20% off coupon is a bit of a joke, since there are a laundry list of exclusions.

the 20% off is such a limited thing, that in order to be "safe' when using it, you really can only know it applies to magazines and candy.

for a real giggle try "special ordering" handgun ammo through them. Heh heh, the only thing they can order is what they currently have in the store. Anything else cant be ordered because they leave the skew in with multiple prices in the system, so it wont let them order.

It's a marketing ploy designed to get your attention and hopefully sell you something. A lot of people realize how worthless most of the things are, but a lot of people get hooked. People still get caught in phishing scams too and you'd think they know better. The lure of easy money ... or easy goods.

The profit margin on guns and ammo is so small that 20% off would likely mean them selling at a loss. Many other items are marked up 200%-400% over their actual costs. Even if they sell it at 20% off they are making a nice profit.

A Dunhams opened here about 2 years ago. There are 2 Sports Authorities and a Cabelas less than 45 minutes away. It is worth my trouble to drive. They are priced much higher than any of them.

There is a Dunham's in Hastings and it is a total waste of time

That's just totally wrong friend. They aren't a waste of my time. I wouldn't waste time going in their store. They are a waste of space. Big difference. ;) They're really, really bad.

Its not as though any store is OBLIGATED to sell you ANY item at a discount, just like you are not obligated to purchase any item. Complaining about exclusions on an discount one was never "entitled" to seems funny to me...

Also the staff at Dunham's acted like I was buying a nuclear warhead instead of a gun.
Very true.

I bought a 10/22 there a few years ago. It had a tiny scratch on it so the manager sold it to me for $175. It took me almost two hours to get out the door with it.

Ha. Reminds me of Dick's sporting goods. Their policies make it seem like the company is run by Bloomberg himself.

Dick's is the PC member of the group. They'd prefer you just buy overpriced athletic gear.

They also own Field & Stream stores where the less PC can shop for guns and hunting equipment. Personally, I stay away from both. Dick's for obvious reasons, the next because it's owned by the first.

We just got a Dunhams around here. Never been in the store because just looking at their ads, their pricez are very high on guns/ammo. Best place by me is Rural King, who just started carrying guns, used to be just ammo.

if a company is going to put out a 20% off coupon, try to make sure it doesnt apply to every seasonal item you just got instock.

in example, if you just converted half your sales space to say, insulated underwear. Please dont make a 20% off coupon that excludes insulated underwear.

you know, I was just thinking the other day 'How DOES Dunham's stay in business?' - I still have no answer to this question.

I used to wonder about those Sunglasses places in malls. I've never seen anyone actually buy anything at one of them (yes my wife drags me to the mall at times). It has to be a front for a tax write off. Seriously they can't possibly be making money there with all the fees the malls charge to put a business out in the aisle like that. I guess if they sold 2 pair of glasses a day they might be in the black because they charge a fortune for their stuff.

There is a Dunhams in Alexandria (KY). I been meaning to stop in, then again maybe not after reading this thread.
.

Years ago there was a Dunham's up the road, it went away. Till a few weeks ago I thought they were extinct.

Anyway, that coupon practice isn't all that unusual in retail stores. During a major sale I have seen discounts range from 10% to 33% depending on the product. They look at their markup product by product and discount accordingly. Overall I think the markup on guns and ammunition is less than the markup on, for example, clothing items. I don't really think guns and ammo have a season, sure, maybe hunting seasons but overall not much as I see it. Typically when I see guns on sale they are normally a 10% discount of MSRP. Sometimes more but generally speaking. Clothing? As we sit in winter the spring and summer clothing will be coming out, look for 20% to 30% discounts as they try to move the winter clothing out.

...til I read the fine print...

Ah yes, it's all in the details. :)

Yep, avoid like the plague. I almost got a gun there when they first opened. Passed the NICS check, but they wanted to also do their own corporate check and phone my info into their national or regional office. That line was down, or something, so they wanted me to come back the next day. Note this is after completing the 4473 and them phoning it in.

I also don't see how they stay in business. My son buys Walmart quality shoes there and I think my wife has bought a trampoline from them, but there's normally only 4-5 cars in the parking lot. They must have at least 5 employees so they can't have many customers.

no idea what store that is, but round here the big box stores like gander and bass pro are, imho, a complete waste of time. more of their own private label junk over real brand selections and prices sky high compared to the lgs and smaller regional hunting and fishing shops.

we have a couple of dicks around here now......i was not impressed. guess i'm not missing nothing with this dunhams place?

went there to buy a gun vault that was on sale, the employees were all talking to one another at the cash registers. I couldn't find the one on sale, I asked them about it and was told they didn't carry it! They just lost a customer.

Finally went to the one here. Had Remington subsonic 22lr for $4.49 per 50, almost bought the last 3 boxes but I already have enough. Otherwise, selection was ok and prices were high.

They pulled a bait and switch on me or tried to. They had a game camera with a price tag right in front of it. When I went to buy it they tried to charge me $30 more. It was the only camera in their display case and there was only one price sign there. I haven't been back since and I won't go back. I actually worried at first that they would give my LGS's enough competition to put them out of business. Didn't happen. They rarely have anyone on their lot and they sell a lot of stuff besides guns.

Our local Dunhams consistantly sells shot shells cheaper than anyone. Bought 3 Axis there because they were cheaper. Got all my kayaks there. While it is not the worlds best sporting goods store and mostly the staff know very little about what they're selling, especially the guns and/or ammo, IF you shop the sales it's possible to get bargains. My experience anyways.
