After buying a Marlin 60 I put a Ruger SR9 on layaway.

Now I wonder what kind of gadget to put on the accessory rail.

I like the viridian lights, I have a CTL on my PX4, its small but very bright. They also have laser/light combos.

Or you could do this. :)

On a bedside gun a light is pretty useful. If nothing else if mitigates recoil and muzzle flip. Money is probably better spent on ammo :D

In my opinion, a light has many more benefits than a laser. I actually have a rail light that has both a light and a laser and I never use the laser, should have just gone with the light.

The light will illuminate your target in low light situations (it's important to know who or what you are pointing your weapon at and a laser will not do that, so you will still need a light in the dark), AND a bright light shining into the eyes of a potential target can temporarily blind and/or disorient the subject, giving you an advantage.

The only situation where for me personally, where a laser may be helpful, is if you have a small subcompact weapon with lousy sights and my guess from playing around with a laser in the house with simulated SD play situations, is that my eye picks up the slide of the weapon and a portion of the front sight, even a crappy one, before it picks up the dot from the laser.

My 2 cents

If you have never fired a weapon inside a house before without hearing protection, it is a bad experience. Think flashbang, buy a silencer

Call me stupid and I'm no part ninja, but if it came to an encounter in the dark and I was defending my home I would not want to cover anything and everything I wanted lit up with the muzzle of my gun.

Why? Are you going to shoot at an unlit object?

Basic Rules of Safe Gun Handling

All guns are always loaded.
Never point a gun at anything you are unwilling to destroy.
Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire.
Know your target.
Keep your gun at the minimum level of readiness.

If it's a pistol that's used for home protection, as others have suggested, a weapon mounted light is an absolute must. Personally, I have a Streamlight TLR-1s on my Sig Sauer P226. My "nightstand" defense kit consists of my Sig P226/Streamlight combo, a pair of glasses (I'm blind as a bat without glasses or contacts) and my cell phone.

Did you get Tech Sights for your Marlin?

As far as the pistol goes, get 4-5 extra mags and then get lots of ammo and practice. A "basic pistol" course would also be excellent. A kydex holster such as the Fobus will help a lot at the range.

Problem is Ruger mags (only ones that even makes mags for the SR9) are ~$35 each. Add in shipping and you are looking at $40 per mag.

I suggest probably 2 more mags if the OP is on a tight budget.
