Releasing hogs from traps is the wrong answer, castrated or not. None of those hogs will ever enter a trap again. They will also warn away other hogs in the sounder when they get near a trap.

Not knowing the reason for your selectivity or the laws/regulations in your State, I will not make any judgments (and probably have no such entitlement anyway).

I would offer this one observation though: The newly 'modified' boars (now Barrs) though no longer capable of 'reproducing', will be no less destructive of the landscape. In a State with a healthy population of hogs....it seems a better solution would have been to have dispatched ALL of the trapped pigs.

But...again, I do not know your purposes. Best of luck in your continued efforts, I hope you trap a 'mess' of them.

Flint.

Doesn't FL have the 2nd largest feral pig population behind Texas?

Yeah, I wouldn't have had them leave the trap under their own power.... Too much destruction that they can cause (especially the sow)

This is conjecture on my part. The OP's area is listed as SW FL. This is the area where the state has the core population of Fla. panthers (cougars). Hunters get a raw deal down there because the panthers and bears get more consideration by the state than any hunters do.
The main prey for the panthers are wild hogs .. same with the bears. Deer would be the main target but deer have been reduced in numbers by the panthers' resurgence. Hunters are last on the totem pole and hunters have mainly hogs to hunt due to their high reproductive rate. If he wants to hunt, it may be that hogs are the only game in town.

The state plans to limit deer hunting to a 3 point on one antler rule next year and reduce the doe kill. You can probably figure out why. :barf: Hint: It has nothing to do with "trophy" production for hunters.

I've released little ones once from the trap that I didn't wanna mess with. There were five of 'em in there. I shoot the daddy. :D I don't consider it a sin so long as you didn't transport 'em to another area, which by Texas law is verboten, not sure about Florida.

Right now, I'd like to have those little pigs back. My freezer is bare of hogs, haven't seen sign or game camera picture of one in a month and haven't trapped one in over a year. I like pigs, free range pork. i hope they come back soon. :D

Hey, Pato, gators eat pigs, too. :D

Contrary to popular belief, wild hogs are not as thick as fire ants in parts of florida.
It is no illegal to release a hog from a trap in florida on your land or land you have permission to be on. I dont eat stinking boar hogs. But if you like help your self. I have caught the same hog as many as three times in the same trap ! The three point rule is in effect sense 2013 on some WMA. And yes we have plenty of panthers, bears, an gators. And it wont be long for the rest of florida for panthers ! Panthers do eat hogs but there main prey is deer ! The practice of castrating wild hogs in florida is hundreds of years old. like i said i dont eat stinking boar hog. By turning the sow lose she makes more pigs .

So...you trap hogs, castrate the males and release the female so she can make more. What the hell is the point? Do you simply enjoy castrating hogs? Or maybe you enjoy the testicles?

o Unforgiven o, you castrate boar hogs for the same reason you don't buy bull meat at your grocery. (Okay, maybe in hamburger.) Steers are more tender.

I guess cannibals would prefer eunuchs?

I would have shot all three and threw them on a grill, at the very least the sow. You did the right thing castrating the boars since you decided to turn them loose, though I would never turn any hog loose back into the wild. To each their own.

We are not over run with hogs in NC. We are not the pulled pork capitol for nothing. If you pull a strand of barbed wire tight with a come-a-long hogs at ground level the hoges are not digging out. I pulled my net wire tigh with a come-a-long. My trap is probably 10 years old. All sizes of hogs have tried to break out. All the wire is still very tight. I have had to replace the trap door. I found an old can of creosote to paint one door with. The creosote didn't help a bit. The hogs treated the creosote like it was seasoning, Hogs are rough on the posts too.
