I'm considering another .22 just for the fun of it. No hunting or competition shooting. Just paper or soda cans.
So I'm thinking along the lines of an M&P 15-22 or the GSG 522. My LGS has a 522 for about $320 right now. Judging by Gun Broker it looks like the M&P 15-22 is in the $400 to $450 range. Now I'm pretty sure that from what I've read that the GSG is a pot metal gun. There may be nothing wrong with that, but I've sort of got a mental hurdle to get over with the whole 'pot metal' thing. Is the M&P pot metal also or steel?

I've read a lot of good reviews of the GSG and watched some videos. Sounds like it functions well but is more inexpensively made, and is more involved to take down.

Edited to add: What about the Colt M4?

To those that have experience with these two rifles, what are your thoughts?

Your help is appreciated.

I've tried the GSG and the M&P 15-22. Of those two, the better rifle is the S&W, hands down. Build quality is better and so is accuracy.
I've not tried the Colt...

I played with all three when they first came out. I bought the s&w. All plastic though except the barrel etc. No pot metal that I know of?

It's a pretty good rifle for what it is.

I love my 15-22. It has become my do all 22: squirrel hunting, steel challenge, etc. accurate, fun, reliable, etc.

Edit: No pot metal. Mostly plastic. Barrel and bolt group are steel. I have a factory trigger. It isn't bad, but you do have lots of trigger upgrade options.

I also looked into the GSG-522 and found CDNN selling them, but for about $100 or so more (from the same CDNN catalog), I found Heckler and Koch MP5 SD .22LR. It's similar in appearance as the GSG-522 but from the research, is of a better build quality. Google the two and see if it's worth the extra c-note. They are HK licensed, manufactured by Walther and imported by Umarex.

I am very pleased with my HK MP5SD .22LR and found CDNN also sold a spare 25 round magazine for I believe $19 with the purchase of a MP5 .22LR or $29 otherwise.
I bought mine for $349 last month, so I believe those prices are still current if they still have them in stock.

I modded my 15-22 to match my 223 AR. The only difference is weight . The 15-22 is lighter ,good cheap practice. Yes I bought 25k of .22 b4 Barry Obama screwed this all up.

Go with the S&W!
The "Colt" (umarex) is the pot metal gun that had problems with the barrel breaking away from the receiver when it was first released.

Same here. Love mine. :) Got it during one of the PSA $299 deals a couple months ago.

I bought the gsg and had fun with it, kind of heavy. It shot great and was accurate. If you want to add a foregrip or optics you have to get additional mounts. I ended up trading it in for the 15-22 moe edition. I am much happier with the 15-22.

The 15-22 shoots just as good and all the controls are the same as my S&W M&P 15. Plus I can add any attachments it I want or change the iron sights easily.

We have two 15-22s and both eat anything you feed them. I ran a box of Remington standard velocity that was over 35 years old and it didn't miss a beat.
Can't speak for the others.

I traded into the Colt and while it is a solid and accurate shooter when it is working well it is really fussy when it comes to ammunition. Mine only likes the CCI LR hollow point ammo. Even tuning it for other ammo types does not help. After 100-150 rounds it needs to be stripped and cleaned or it will start to malfunction almost every shot with the CCI, others are much worse.

I own a gsg522 and an MP15. Had I bought the MP1522 first, I would not have bought the GSG522. No comparison is quality and easy of cleaning.

I too am among those who spent a lot of money on the Umarex unit and then discovered the 15-22. The Smith is a better firearm in all ways, same controls (that work) and will, unlike the Colt, gobble any ammo I feed it. I have two 15-22's and a dedicated DPMS .22 that I shoot a lot while the imitation Colt remains at home. I end most all of my shooting trips to the woods with a few hundred or more .22's being run through the 15-22's.

I have always been leery of the M&P 15/22 after I saw three different rifles break extractors on the Appleseed firing line when they first came out. One guy sent his off to have the extractor replaced, and it broke again in the same way immediately on getting it back. He sent it back again, and they said they were replacing it with an improved part. I'm not sure what luck he had after that. I don't know if this is an issue with the early production models or what, but it was not confidence inspiring to say the least. Neither was my recent experience with S&W customer service with my broken M&P 10: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=771366

For a good semi .22, I see no reason to go with anything but a Ruger 10/22. You can set one of those up any way you want. If you like the pistol grip and collapsible stock type setup, you can have it with a 10/22 as well. I trust those to be reliable more than any other semi .22.

Purchased my HK (licensed by HK and made by Walter) from CDNN for $329 last month. Nicely made and eats anything I have put in it so far. Most of my ammo is at least 10 years old but work just fine.

They're no more made by Walther than the P22 and PK380 are. It may say Walther on it, but all are made by Umarex. Just like the CCP.

The Colt is also made by Umarex. Just get the S&W, at least it's made by them.

Again, it's NOT made by Walther....

UMAREX Sportwaffen GmbH & Co. KG was founded in 1972 and manufactures sport and competition firearms, ammunition, airguns, airsoft guns and signal pistols. In 1993 Umarex bought Carl Walther GmbH Sportwaffen, though guns continued to be manufactured using the Walther name and trademarks.

There are only three AR/MSR training rifles out there worth considering, the S&W MP 15-22, the Sig 522, and building your own .22LR rifle on an AR lower (CMMG upper or other maker). The GSG 522 is close enough in look/feel/purpose, I would call the .22LR MSR rifles as being in the same category of rifles.

Colt, Umarex, Mossberg, "Walther" (aka Umarex), "HK" (aka Umarex) "GSG 522" (aka Umarex) and others have put out copies, but they are just low quality firearms jammed into looking like an AR/MSR.

S&W and Sig designed 22's from the ground up to look like AR's (or Sig 5xx) and built them right. They come apart correctly, they are simple, and function great. They are great rifles that look and feel like MSR's, but they are about functioning well first. The other companies just kinda kicked out a product to look like an MSR, without really caring about it shooting/function well or being well finished.

Since we talked about 22's, there is of course the 10/22, and you can of course build it out to look like a tactical rifle, or what ever you would like. I sold my 15-22 because it didn't do much more than my 10/22 did, and while I haven't found my self lacking function wise, I do miss the "fun" factor of the 15-22.

wbwanzer: My Son and I both have a M&P 15-22 and a GSG-5 22. And he also has a SIG 522 and the SIG is his favorite for shooting the 22 Action Shoots we get to go to ever so often. He is normally in the top 2 to 3 shooters for score and time, using His SIG 522 and it always preforms flawlessly for Him. Me, it has been so long since I have won anything, I just go to the 22 matches to Shoot and BS with all my Old Over The Hill Shooting Partners. I like shooting both my M&P 15-22 and GSG-5 22. They both work just fine for me. The M&P15-22 is the better rifle and more accurate of the two, but the GSG-5 22 is so cocky looking and it is just a hoot for me to shoot it and IMHO it is a very good rifle. And it really catches every body`s eye when I am up on the line, fireing it. And every body wants to shoot it, Men, Women, & Kids. So the GSG-5 really gets a real workout any time I take it with me to a shoot and it always gets a lot of ammo shot thru it at each one of them. I really don`t think I have ever taken the GSG-5 22 to a 22 shoot that I have not been approached several times to buy it for more than a new one would cost. I shoot a red dot sight on both my M&P 15-22 and GSG-5 22 and both look really cocky. But the GSG-5 22 deffinetly is the most popular with the people that ask to shoot either of my rifles. Neither one of my rifles are for sale, but I don`t think I would have any problem at all selling the GSG-5 22.

I have a pair of the S&W 15/22s, flawless and happy with them.
But I also have a pair of Ruger 10/22s, also flawless and happy with them.
