Given a decision between a 1911 and a Hi-Power, I'd go 1911 every time. I personally find Hi-Powers to be about as attractive as the south end of a northbound donkey...

Good Lord, really? "The south end of a donkey??" The Browning Hi Power is better looking than ANY 1911.

I prefer fixed sights on my Hi Powers, but $700 is a good deal for that gun, as it looks new.

What is the propose of the gun? Self defense? Do you plan to shoot it a lot? 9mm ammo is way less expensive than 45ACP ammo, which makes for more practice, which makes for better shooting.

The DW is a very nice 1911, but you're looking at twice the price of that BHP.

I'd say buy the BHP and shoot it; if you don't like it, you can get your $700 back easy by re-selling it.

ACP,
My purpose would simply to acquire another one. I have a 2 tone practical that I absolutely love. It would spend it's life with me punching holes in paper occasionally. that's about as rough of a duty it would have to serve.

If you've already got a Hi-Power that you enjoy and this one wouldn't be a collector piece, why double up? The only reasons I can see getting this one is because it may replace the other you have because you like it more or because you think you can flip it to make money. Unless it's one of those reasons, stay the course and continue on to your 1911.

Edit: Be sure to thank your buddy for the tip, even if it was a tempting distraction. It's nice to have friends providing more eyes than you have.

Agreed then. If you've got a Practical -- a wonderful, beautiful BHP -- go with the Dan Wesson!

It is a fair price on the gun. I am seeing New Hi Powers for around $880. I would look for a motivated seller before I bought another Hi Power.
You're missing the part in his original post where he says the seller is advertising the price LOWER locally than the Armslist price, so it's actually less than the $700 price listed, so it would seem to be a little more tempting depending on the difference in price.

Give me the seller's address and I'll go over and solve your problem for you. :)

Tough call. I also have a Hi-Power that's been great in terms of reliability and accuracy. So I'm not sure if I would go with another one in lieu of picking up a really nice 1911 that I wanted. Let us know what you ultimately decide to do.

I'm not big on the adj. sights hp. They work fine but look odd to me. I own 3 with fixed sights and they shoot better than i do. I'd go 1911 unless that version of bhp is what you really want.

That said both the bhp and milspec 1911 are the 2 best looking pistols ever built. Once you start adding long beavertails and commander hammers and rails and other "enhancements" stuff.......the looks start to fade much like a naturally beautiful woman who then starts to add surgical enhancements.

I would be all over that nice MK III Hi Power. $700 is a very fair price.

Hi Powers are rare, and 1911s are not. At $700 you can still afford to upgrade the gun with trigger work, sights, and grips without breaking the bank. As pointed out earlier, there's a huge economic argument for shooting in 9mm vs. 45. I'd also point out that the BHP has the same manual of arms as the 1911, so any lessons learned on a BHP translate well.

Get the BHP and don't look back,

It's a deal. Buy it. If you change your mind you can easily get your money back.

I'd buy it, but I like HPs a lot.
1911s are more plentiful than HPs.
The ad price is a good deal, so if it's less, even better. You can always get your money back out of it.

Probably a good deal strictly from a value perspective. IMHO the Hi Power looks better than the 1911, and it FEELS better in the hand, but pull the trigger once and you prefer the 1911.

That said, I've never tried a BHP with a nice trigger job, so YMMV (if I ever get the spare cash I'm thinking of having mine tweaked a bit).

I also am not a fan of the sights on this one. Functional I'm sure, but they look retro in a very bad way.

I'd personally keep saving for the 1911 myself, though this isn't so much a question you should ask us: which do YOU want more? That's the one that the funds should ultimately go to.
