Mossberg 510 20 gauge?

Mossberg 510 20 gauge Muddy Girl plus light loads for beginner?

  • Yes, she will love it! Fiocci Trainers 3/4 oz@1075 fps will be fine.

  • No way! Too much recoil even with lightest handloads or Fiocci Trainers.

I am considering this for my daughter, who can shoulder it and point it without tipping over. Anything else is too much LOP, and too heavy. For now, this is the biggest, heaviest shotgun she can use.

I looked up the Fiocci trainer loads, and with those 3/4 shells at 1075 the recoil calculators give about 14.5. In comparison, I am shooting 7/8 loads at about 1200 out of my 7.5 lb o/u and that yields about the same calculation, which is pretty light. I know a youngster has less muscle mass than an adult, but that recoil still seems very light.

I have read various reviews and posts on the web, varying from "it is fine with light loads, enjoy" to "brutal recoil! It will make the kid never want to shoot again!" I'm curious to get more opinions before deciding. She is motivated, but I am afraid of her shooting it once or twice, saying "No way" and having it be a disappointment. I sort of find it hard to believe that the company would go through the trouble of designing and selling a Muddy Girl 5lb 20 gauge shotgun knowing it would only bring misery and disappointment to the recipients, but you never know.

Also, would adding a wearable recoil pad (going to be way to big on a 10 year old) help manage things?

I use a Mosserg 500 bantam (the youth model) and with 20 ga 7/8 oz shells recoil is very light I would not hesitate to give it to a child on a hunt.

I think that would fine for a girl and maybe go with either a Limbsaver butt pad or a P.A.S.T. recoil shoulder pad if the recoil becomes a problem.

When I was nine, I was outshooting my older brothers using a pump 12ga [forget if it was an 870? or 500? Wasn't into such minutia at the time]: I would have positively killed for a kid-size 20ga! If I missed, I had to drop the gun to shuck the shell & bring it back up to line for a 2nd shot; it was just too big to hold up & work the action. Still, it was all worth it [outsize gun, recoil, etc] to finally be able to hold my head up in competition w/ my older brothers [next one was 4 years older, other was 6 older.] :D

Don't forget that up to puberty, girls & boys aren't that much different in size, so @ 10 she's probably going to be not too much smaller than I was @ 9 [all so many years ago! ;) ]

WRT recoil pad: just have her wear a jacket: it will fit her, be familiar, provide just enough buffer, & not make her feel self conscious. Once she's used to the recoil and the day warms up, she can take it off later if she feels like it, or not (up to her.)

I am not sure his recoil calculations are correct. A 30/06 has a recoil od around 15 lb. 15lb is about the max an adult can shoot comfortably. I have seen plenty of people bust their eye with a 30/06.

Does anyone know if the 510 stock will fit on a standard 500? I've looked at them sxs, and looks like they would. I already have a 500, and think that might be the route I go with my kids, just seems like the 510 would be something they'd grow out of too soon.
