Well I suppose I shouldn't be too excited, she's certainly nothing fancy. Just an old mutt, 70 series colt slide and colt barrel in an old essex frame, but she's a 1911, and mine!

I've never had a huge interest in these guns till a few months ago when I rented a kimber at the local range. Sense then I've managed to be a range bum (uusing my own ammo of course) and try out several others and totally fell in love. So i picked this thing up. Haven't had much of a chance to shoot it yet, but did a full detail strip, cleaning and lube, and believe it or not this thing was the cleanest used gun I've ever purchased.

It had a cracked barrel link and torn up recoil bushing which I replaced. IL be ordering a new spring kit and a few good mags soon and it should be ready for a test run. I know it's a cheap gun but I'm thrilled to have it. Very excited to start shooting with it!!

I'm sure the more experienced crew will be along shortly but cracked links usually point barrel fitment issues. Calling Tuner and RC!

Sorry but I just gotta say-This Thread Is Worthless Without Pictures.

Congratulations. Let us know how it shoots once you get it to the range. I really like the 1911 platform.

IL put up pictures when I get done with dinner. I should have known that was coming.

I had also read about the cracked link indicating other problems. I had my smith take a look through it while he was replacing it, Everything looked ok to him, though it seemed to be a pretty quick and superficial inspection. I'm basically starting from square 1 here due to having roughly zero experience with 1911s.

First priority is obviously to make sure it's in good, reliable, shooting order. Once I get that established I would like to get a beavertail grip safety (I have fat hands) and better sights at the very least.

My first 1911 (as well as my first handgun) was a mutt, WW2 era Ithaca slide on a newer AutoOrdnance frame. Can't get that gun to malfunction even with $5 noname mags.

Congrats on the new gun, have fun!

Interesting that it's a Colt slide and barrel over an Essex frame. I bought one of those a couple years back. Matter of fact, I was in a pinch for time, and did a cursory inspection of the pistol and bought it, and ran on to my next appointment. Didn't notice the frame was Essex till I got home. BUT: When I disassembled it, I found that the barrel was near pristine, and was a GI issued Colt barrel. I upgraded the barrel in my collector Colt, and sold the Colt/Essex for the price I'd paid for it, with a half-life barrel of modern production.
A win/win for seller, collector, and buyer. (The pistol shot well with the downgrade barrel)

Nice GI-style piece.

They still haven't found a way to make a 1911 look cooler than U.S. military as-issued.

I hope it turns out to be dependable workhorse for you.

Looks like a decent enough parts 1911. Hope everything checks out okay with the internals and with barrel to slide fit. I have an Essex frame that required a great deal of hand fitting and filing to get it up and running.

If the replacement breaks, for sure! But my first RIA 1911 broke its barrel link at about 3000 rounds, its replacement is still going strong 10000+ rounds later. Sometimes things just break, fix it and move on!

Love the looks of it. You may have a real gem, but before you mess up something with
that link, try to get 1911Tuner to look at it.
