So I started a thread here, http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=772548, asking about the SA 1911 EMP.

Now I would like to know if anyone has experience in comparison of the EMP to the SIG P938 and the CZ P-01, I am only interested in the 9mm version of each. I am a Lefty hence LeftyTSGC

Pro's, Con's, comments? For the price of all of these anywhere from $600 up to $1200 I cant believe that the CZ is the only one that offers a ambidextrous magazine release.

These are the main three handguns that I am interested in, Why? they are all metal pistols, and they have that 1911 look, at least the SA and SIG do.

Any comments would be appreciated.

The P01 is going to be bigger(light rail) and have about twice the capacity of the other two. If not interested in the light rail, you might look at the PCR instead of the P-01. Basically the same gun, but without the rail.

Not exactly comparable. The P938 is a pocket gun that bears a superficial resemblance to the 1911; the EMP is more or less a subcompact 1911; the P01 is a compact doublestack DA/SA. They're three very different guns.

I can't speak to the P01, but I own an EMP and a P938. Both are excellent, as is the P01 from everything I've heard.

As far as plusses go, the EMP is much more accurate (for me), is more "shootable" as it's a larger gun, has greater capacity (9+1 versus 7+1 with the extended magazine for the 938) and to me has less felt recoil, allowing me to be back on target quicker.

The 938 carries easier, as it's about 17 ounces versus EMP's 28 ounces, can be pocket carried where the EMP really can't, is much more comfortable to carry all day to to it's reduced size and weight and is much less likely to print when carried concealed, as the EMP's grip is much longer. The 938 has also been trouble free, where I had to send the EMP back to Springfield for repair. Both are now reliable.

While the 938 is much easier to carry, if I were in the unfortunate position of having to actually use one of them, I'd prefer to have the EMP as I shoot is so much better. That's a personal preference, as others may shoot the 938 better.

As a southpaw shooter myself. I learned long ago how to use my shooting hand finger to disengage the safety and mag releases. sure opens the door to many more choices for us southpaws. It's worth the effort to train to handle right handed firearms.

I like all three but as said already they are very different from each other.

A quick note. I do not believe that I know of any P-01 with an ambidextrous magazine release.

I have a P938. I had an EMP. I know almost nothing about the CZ, other than many people seem to be happy with them. DA autos are part of my past. Nothing wrong with them, I just prefer SA. I told you of my EMP experience in your other thread, but to sum it up, I loved it, but couldn't get it to run right. My P938 has been flawless. Great little gun. It is smaller and easier to carry than the EMP. The EMP was slightly easier to shoot well. I really wished that gun would have worked right.

There all exceptional fire arms the P-01 is the largest but weighs in only slightly more than the Emp,And is a very shootable pistol(one of my favorites.)
And for dependability it woul be my choice over the others.

I have the CZ PCR.... Very similar to the P-01 but without rail. By far, my favorite CCW. Very accurate...100% reliable (my experience through at least 2k rnds), and points like a gun should.

It has been hit on already in this thread, and I agree that between the EMP and the P938 it basically boils down to the EMP being a better shooter with a slightly bigger mag and the P938 being easier to conceal.

The CZ is a different animal, I have no experience with that model specifically but it's double action and holds a whole lot more rounds. You gotta decide if that's something you want, or do you want to stick with a more 1911 style gun.

COLT Defender 9mm????

I should of added this at the beginning, how does the COLT Defender stack up with the other pistols mentioned?

I like that way it looks and feels. I held a Colt Defender in .45 cal at the LGS yesterday and the guy said the nine is the same size. If so its not bad. Any comments?

I love my P-01. One thing to consider is that there are a world of potential upgrades for the P-01 that aren't available for the other two. Between CZ-Custom and Cajun Gun Works, you can easily turn your P-01 into an even better carry or competition gun for not that much. It's fine out of the box, though, with good trigger that only gets better. Shoots darts and has been totally reliable for me for over 2500 rounds.

The Defender is probably the best of the 3-inch 1911s. Good reputation for reliability and not frightfully expensive. I'd buy one of them before I'd buy an EMP.

I know the .45 Defender/New Agents are good guns, don't really know of anyone with a 9mm version so I'm not much help there.

Apples and oranges. The CZ compact series, of which the P01 is part of has a pedigree from the 75 that has been certified with extensive testing, and designed for use in most European police and military units. It is a different animal that a 1911.
They really can't be compared side by side, other than which one you like better.
the EMP is a redesigned 1911 made for the smaller 9mm and 40 cartridge specifically. Not a 45 that has a downsized barrel and different mag than the 45. It was made specifically for the 9 and 40 rounds.
This is why you really can't compare the 2. Also the CZ can be either a DE- cocker or a safety, depending on the parts kit you install, where the emp is a single action pistol, not double.
the impressive thing is the testing that the CZ has gone through, stoppages was only 7 per 15,000 rounds. So if you want reliability you can't go wrong with any of the compact series guns from CZ.
Also the CZ is half the price.
