I've had this plan for a rest in my head for a few years and finally got around to making some chips.

Body is stainless steel, legs are 1" cold rolled, the top is aluminum and rides on a 1"x16tpi stainless screw that started life as a .223 Hart rifle barrel.

Thanks guys. By far the worst part was boring the hole through that chunk of stainless. It took about 4 hrs. The biggest drill bit that I have is 3/4" so I had to use a boring bar to get the last 1/4" out. My bars are high speed steel whch is softer than the stainless so I had to take many many many itty bitty cuts and sharpen the tool each pass.

It was worth it.

That is a beautifully constructed piece of machinery. It looks much nicer than my rest made from a scissor jack from an old car and a small piece of plywood.
