The first Glocks, the gen1 G17's were pretty danged homely (bought mine in 1985 :neener: ), but the newer ones having some grip texture and finger grooves, as well as the better proportioned compacts, especially the G19, look pretty cool to me.
BTW, this is a very well-phrased poll, that isn't annoyingly tainted by the OP's personal biases like so many others I've seen. Nice job!!

As far as the aesthetics of the Glock go I can't view the gun without considering function, sort of like two Land Rovers I have owned that were pretty butt ugly. The Glock is clean, simple, utilitarian. There's nothing there that doesn't need to be there. I think that after the first and second gen the gun fairs less well in terms of looks with rails, finger grooves and the texturing.

I wouldn't call them ugly, but I wouldn't call them especially aesthetically pleasing either. The compact models look the best in my book as they look to have the best proportions. The sub compacts look a little too squished and stumpy and the full sized and long slide versions just look like a kid who hasn't quite grown into their excessively long arms and legs yet.

Function wise, I wouldn't hesitate to employ one to protect myself if I could find one that was comfortable in my hand, but that just hasn't happened. I've tried two 23's (a Gen. 2 and a Gen. 3), and I've fondled plenty of RTF Gen 3 and Gen 4 Glocks and I have the same problem with them every time...I just don't like the boxy profile of the grip. I like a more oval shaped grip like what I have with my 1911s, my P2000 and my Sigs.

All that said, I have a couple of dead nuts reliable go to 1911's that get the nod for personal protection, and if I need to stop a Maytag fridge sized intruder, I have long guns that will do the job much more effectively than any pistol.

At the end of the day, the Glock isn't particularly ugly nor is it particularly pretty, but it does its job. Even though it's not the right tool for me, it's certainly the right tool for many thousands upon thousands around the world.

If you are in a life and death situation, with your arse truly in a sling, I think a Glock 17 with a Glock 18 mag inserted in the magwell is the most beautiful sight on earth.

I voted yes, and they are my main carry and platform.

They may be ugly but they have a great personality.:neener:

I think Glocks are kinda ugly but I wouldn't hold their looks against them. The appearance of a gun is so far down my list of concerns as to be pretty much falling off the bottom. My dislike of Glocks stems from the way they shoot and how they fit my hand (or more accurately, don't fit my hand), not the way they look.

Most would say some of my other CCW guns are at least as ugly as a Glock, especially my Ruger LCR and maybe my Nano. I think they look fine but a lot of folks consider them ugly, too.

They are ugly as sin. But I guess I understand why people carry them. I mean if you have a nice looking handgun you probably, like me, hate every scratch or scuff you put on it. But with a Glock there are no worries. It looks so bad brand new that the wear and tear of carrying it daily can't possibly make it look any worse.

When Joe Dirtbag 6'6" 350 loaded up on crystal meth kicks in your door at 0200, would you like an ugly gun that runs all the time or a showboat gun that doesn't?

Well first, I work in an ER and see plenty meth heads. Never seen a 350 pound one though. In my experience it would take at least 3 of them to make a scale hit 350.

But if such a mythical creature ever crashes through my door at 0200 he's not going to be shot with a ugly or nice looking pistol. He would get 6 loads of 00 buckshot form a very reliable and yet decent looking pump shotgun.

To me, a Glock is one of those pistols like that girl you really don't want everyone knowing you are dating yet.

Not the best in the looks department which a lot a people will comment & judge first but when it comes to the brains & action, WOW what a woman..

Now before anyone gets up tight, I only said it this way because if most will be honest we judge by what's on the outside before we really get to know what's underneath.
I personally like a Glock but not for its grip angle, everything else is perfect IMHO.

Used to think they were ugly, but they grow on you so fast that you begin to think they look good. They're not good looking like a 1911, Hi-Power or certain revolvers, but they have a utilitarian/tactical look to them that I do like.

Like the fat girl and moped joke or the ugly duckling that only a mother could love??

I adopted this poor ugly soul the other day. apparently its uglier than ugly. Wont stop me from shooting it though.

Its all good.

The AMC Pacer of hand guns , , they have lots of good points , but they are what they are ,

I think coyotes are pretty cute myself.

As for Glocks, they are utilitarian and robust, straightforward and simple. Gaston Glock is a genious, and it shows in his firearms. Being the prettiest girl at the dance wasn't his priority with gun, but he was more concerned with the girl than could iron your shirt and cook well, and was good in bed even if she looked better with potato a sack over her head.

A buddy of mine put 300,000 miles on an AMC Pacer, then sold it for more than he paid for it.

I have seen a few 350 pound meth heads (LEO 20 years) but they are usually brand new meth heads.

Thermactor, you are a funny guy :).

"Hi, I am Joe Dirtbag. I am twerking on meth and I just kicked in your door to kill your whole family and your dog, but that is a beautiful 1911 you are about to shoot me with."

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

I think the utility is beautiful if that makes any sense. It won't win any pageants, but it will win fights. Kind of how a LEO Crown Victoria doesn't have anything special about it, but it looks like it means business.

Rate women by how pretty they are if you must, I could care less what people think of my gun.
A pretty woman is always a pleasure but even judging them skin deep is a mistake.

Yeah, they're ugly. The trigger sucks, the plastic front sight is a joke, and they point as high as a stoner on payday because of the grip angle...

If a Glock was a woman across the bar, I wouldn't give her a second look...

That said, I have owned a G19 since late 05 or early 06, and a few G17s came and went before then.

Well first, I work in an ER and see plenty meth heads. Never seen a 350 pound one though. In my experience it would take at least 3 of them to make a scale hit 350.
All of them started somewhere, and some of them started at over 300lbs, I'm sure.

Ugly-but beautiful when you need one

When I first saw a GLOCK 17 up close, I though it was the ugliest and strangest gun I had ever handled.
On the other hand, after carrying one on duty for several years. I would not hesitate for a moment to use one to protect myself or my family. So I would rather have that ugly, industrial exterior than the shiniest, prettiest 1911 or COLT SAA when the chips are down.

GLOCKS rewrote the book on durability and reliability as far as I am concerned. A lot of gun makers and users like the military and police agencies agree.

I didn't even bother voting. They don't fall into the pretty category but I don't see them as ugly. They have style that I definately admire.
