New to Hunting, looking to buy my 1st rifle

Cottswald,

I figured, to ensure the scope and rifle didnt get banged up I should get a case. Plus, I thought it would look tacky carrying it out to the field in the box it came in. Lol

Nice choice. Just make sure the scope is tight. I once bought a scope rifle combo and sighted it in for hunting. Got out early in the morning and noticed my scope was rattling around a little.... Im sure you can imagine my frustration.

Since we are on the subject, does anyone have any info on .270's? Seems to be right in that middle grouping.
I have a friend who has hunted elk for 20 years with a .270. It's a great round. They used to make a .270 WSM but I think that round is no longer available.

For all around hunting, you'd be hard pressed to beat the .270, and I have both .308 and a .30-06 rifles.

Now you need to buy 3 or 4 boxes of different hunting ammo and see what brand and weight of bullets that rifle prefers (shoots most accurately). Make sure at least 2 choices are 165 grain sp ammo (federal premium and Winchester silver tips come to mind). It's an expensive process, but if you can find the right ammo that rifle likes, you may be able to obtain MOA or sub-MOA results from a stock rifle. JMHO, good luck!

Femmer,

I picked up a couple boxes of Winchester Super X and Hornady SST's.... the Super X because they said for "deer, antelope and hogs" on the box and the SST's because I like they way they look (hahahah), but also both because of the reviews I read on both. Both in 150 grain. Guessing I should try and find some 160 grain as well.

Which brings me to another question....

The range I am going to tmw, is set up for 50 and 100 yds. Now, the ammo I picked up both say the rounds are 1-1.5 inches high at 100 yds, and bulls-eye at 200 yds. Should I sight in, at 100 with my rounds at 1.5 inches high, so that I "should" be bulls-eye at 200?

I'd sight it in dead even at 100 yards. Mainly because I tend to over estimate distance and most of my shots are 150 yards or less. Others (who are better shots than I am) will disagree and tell you to zero as you propose. Do what you think is right, but please do try 165 grn loads in that .308!

Fremmer,

I found some Hornady Superformance SST's in 165 gr at Dick's. Got two boxes, because they normally cost $40.00 a box, found these for $15.00. So, I will be trying them out.

Another question.... I keep coming up with them... as I didnt see any info in the owner's manual on it..... what is the break-in period for a new rifle (in general)? Meaning, is it a certain # of rounds through the bore or what??

Gents,

Well, this past weekend I went on my very first hunt, hog hunt in S.C. Had a GREAT time and a successful hunt. Took a 150 lb sow, with my Savage Axis XP, 308, using Winchester Super X, 160 grain bullets. One shot one kill from 75 yds. Shot wen in her left side, took out lungs and part of the heart and exited out the other side.

Here are the pics.

Thanks again for all your great advice!!!!
