Got my new Ruger 3" LCRx today!

I finally got my new Ruger 3" LCRx .38 Special today! So far I've only dry fired it; I picked it up on the way to work and probably won't get to shoot it til Monday. It's got the same trigger and basic feel as the older 2" LCR, just more pipe and taller, adjustable sights. Stock it does come with longer grips. I'm sure that as a range gun or even a "kit gun" the new grips would be better. But I wanted it for CCW so I also purchased a set of the older, shorter Tamer grips. And just as I had read, the old grips fit fine. Swapped 'em out in about 30 seconds. The only time consuming issue was figuring out what bit to use as the manual just says "using correct bit" but never says which bit that is! For those that are curious it's a Torx T-10. Just for giggles I tried to stick in the Garrett IWB for the 2" LCR...it's a no-go. The front sight is too tall. However I do have a new Garrett Revolver IWB on the way, hopefully it will be here by Monday-ish.

I'll update once I get 'er to the range! Nice thing is the weight is very close to the original. By my pretty-accurate digital scale it's 15.25 oz, not quite 2 oz heavier than the 2" version.

Mainly I wanted to post a pic with the old style grips since I've never found a pic of them on the 3" gun before. So it does fit just fine!

BTW, a lot of folks say the trigger of the .22 versions is really really terrible. I guess it's a lot heavier to insure reliable ignition of the rimfire round. Given the lousy trigger and the fact that .22 LR ammo is running $.10 per round nowadays (when it can be found at all) the .38 Special version seems to make more sense to me.

I just got back my range trip. Turns out she's a good shooter. I stopped by Scheel's and picked up a 100 round box of 130gr FMJ plinking-type ammo and burned it up. So bear in mind that this is just first impressions with a hundred rounds downrange. But I love it! There's no doubt at all the the longer pipe and better front sight make it easier to shoot. To warm up I fired a few mags from my Ruger Mk I .22 LR pistol, then ran a cylinder of .38 through the gun cocking the hammer between each shots. Then I got to work DA. The recoil isn't bad at all and the Tamer grips work well for me. I started loading 2 or 3 rounds in the gun with others empty; this way I wouldn't know if the gun was going to go BANG! or CLICK! before pulling the trigger. I did this to ensure I wasn't flinching, pulling or pushing in anticipation of the shot.

After a very short time I found I could put double taps about 2" apart on target at 25 feet. Not bad for DA. Even out to 15 yards I was getting all five round in the middle of the head on a B25 target. In fact I seem to be able to shoot the gun better DA than SA for some reason. Very smooth trigger, not too heavy and very predictable.

I'm very happy with the 3" LCRx! At first I had some minor concerns that I was hasty in selling the 2" to step up to the 3" but I needn't have worried- the 3" version is better in every way as a shooter. For pocket carry the 2" would probably be better but I carry IWB anyway. With the short Tamer grips it should conceal virtually identically to the shorter version since it's the same frame. Just more shootable and with more pop on the receiving end.

BTW, when I got home I had an e-mail from Garrett Industries that my Silent Thunder Revolver IWB has shipped!:image035: So with luck I'll be able to see how she carries by Thursday or so.

Yeah, I can never find wadcutters here, either. For the range I just picked up some FMJ 'cause it was cheap but it's so much fun to shoot that I'll have to stock up. And probably pick up a set of dies, too.

Hit a little speed bump today with the holster. I got my new Garrett IWB but the gun doesn't fit- it's not even close. This is as far as the gun will go in before the sight maxes out the space in the sight track:



I e-mailed them when I got home from work. Their CS is awesome so I'm not worried but I am pretty bummed. I was looking forward to wearing it for CCW! Hopefully they'll fix the issue with their mold gun soon; probably the issue is the newness of the gun.
