I finally got my new Ruger 3" LCRx .38 Special today! :D So far I've only dry fired it; I picked it up on the way to work and probably won't get to shoot it til Monday. It's got the same trigger and basic feel as the older 2" LCR, just more pipe and taller, adjustable sights. Stock it does come with longer grips. I'm sure that as a range gun or even a "kit gun" the new grips would be better. But I wanted it for CCW so I also purchased a set of the older, shorter Tamer grips. And just as I had read, the old grips fit fine. Swapped 'em out in about 30 seconds. The only time consuming issue was figuring out what bit to use as the manual just says "using correct bit" but never says which bit that is! For those that are curious it's a Torx T-10. You're welcome.;)

Here are a few 'Droid pix (and sorry about that 2nd one- didn't notice it was out of focus til I went to crop it)::eek:

Just for giggles I tried to stick in the Garrett IWB for the 2" LCR...it's a no-go. The front sight is too tall. However I do have a new Garrett Revolver IWB on the way, hopefully it will be here by Monday-ish.

When people ask for a kit gun or trail gun in something more than 22 rimfire, this is what I, personally, think of. I'm not young and not athletic, so the idea of packing a 357 or a 44 does not appeal to me at all. But even I wouldn't notice the weight of this LCR. I have a 2-inch 38 Special LCR, and it is decently accurate for a DAO gun. With adjustable sights and and a DA/SA trigger, this one should be even better.

Thanks for the good photos, Phaedrus / 69. I'd be interested to hear how it shoots.

I'll update once I get 'er to the range! Nice thing is the weight is very close to the original. By my pretty-accurate digital scale it's 15.25 oz, not quite 2 oz heavier than the 2" version.

Mainly I wanted to post a pic with the old style grips since I've never found a pic of them on the 3" gun before. So it does fit just fine!

BTW, a lot of folks say the trigger of the .22 versions is really really terrible. I guess it's a lot heavier to insure reliable ignition of the rimfire round. Given the lousy trigger and the fact that .22 LR ammo is running $.10 per round nowadays (when it can be found at all) the .38 Special version seems to make more sense to me.

I always had a certain fondness for the S&W Model 36 with a 3" barrel and many years ago I had a Rossi Model 88 which I thought was great as a sort of upscale (caliber-wise), Kit Gun. This new Ruger would definitely fill the bill as the latest version of that.

That actually looks like a pretty decent kit/trail gun.

Congratulations! Please provide a report/review when you can.

Thank you for that. I hadn't seen a pic of that set up either, and I really like it. I think the original style Tamers are very comfortable. As a guy with a weakness for 3" revolvers, I think this would be just about an ideal carry gun.

Congratulations on the new LCRx. Nice pics too.

My father bought one a couple of weeks ago. Very impressed with it myself. Though I've only shot it 5 times it seems accurate. Surprising the a revolver this light has such a nice trigger. Factory grips are comfortable but those Tamers look to be about perfect.

I just got back my range trip. Turns out she's a good shooter.:D I stopped by Scheel's and picked up a 100 round box of 130gr FMJ plinking-type ammo and burned it up. So bear in mind that this is just first impressions with a hundred rounds downrange. But I love it! There's no doubt at all the the longer pipe and better front sight make it easier to shoot. To warm up I fired a few mags from my Ruger Mk I .22 LR pistol, then ran a cylinder of .38 through the gun cocking the hammer between each shots. Then I got to work DA. The recoil isn't bad at all and the Tamer grips work well for me. I started loading 2 or 3 rounds in the gun with others empty; this way I wouldn't know if the gun was going to go BANG! or CLICK! before pulling the trigger. I did this to ensure I wasn't flinching, pulling or pushing in anticipation of the shot.

After a very short time I found I could put double taps about 2" apart on target at 25 feet. Not bad for DA. Even out to 15 yards I was getting all five round in the middle of the head on a B25 target. In fact I seem to be able to shoot the gun better DA than SA for some reason. Very smooth trigger, not too heavy and very predictable.

I'm very happy with the 3" LCRx! At first I had some minor concerns that I was hasty in selling the 2" to step up to the 3" but I needn't have worried- the 3" version is better in every way as a shooter. For pocket carry the 2" would probably be better but I carry IWB anyway. With the short Tamer grips it should conceal virtually identically to the shorter version since it's the same frame. Just more shootable and with more pop on the receiving end.

BTW, when I got home I had an e-mail from Garrett Industries that my Silent Thunder Revolver IWB has shipped!:image035: So with luck I'll be able to see how she carries by Thursday or so.:D

Thanks, Phaedrus / 69! Sounds like a excellent pistol in a variety of ways. I wish 38 Spl wadcutters were easier to find where I live (SE Wisconsin). They'd make a good practice/warm-up load for this.

Yeah, I can never find wadcutters here, either. For the range I just picked up some FMJ 'cause it was cheap but it's so much fun to shoot that I'll have to stock up. And probably pick up a set of dies, too.:D

Hit a little speed bump today with the holster. I got my new Garrett IWB but the gun doesn't fit- it's not even close. This is as far as the gun will go in before the sight maxes out the space in the sight track:

I e-mailed them when I got home from work. Their CS is awesome so I'm not worried but I am pretty bummed. I was looking forward to wearing it for CCW! Hopefully they'll fix the issue with their mold gun soon; probably the issue is the newness of the gun.

Excellent gun! I will get one then end of this month...Or, I may wait for the 357 mag version.

Hey RUGER! START MAKING THE LCRx and 3 inch LCRx in 357 magnum please!

Phaedrus/69.... Problems with holsters is what really turned me on to Versa-Carry. Select the right caliber and barrel length and you're good to go. I can't remember the last time I used my IWB holsters, (and I have a lot of them for various guns!). I love that my 2" snubby Versa-carry can be used for all of my 2" snubs plus my Sig P238 & Walther PPK/S .380's as well. I've purchased them for my .44's & .45's as well. I use my 4" .45 auto Versa-carry for both my 5" 1911 & my 3" Bond derringer. I did remove that weird guard though... don't ever see me needing that, but, view them here and visit a Gander Mt. to look at them up close. http://www.versacarry.com At $25 a piece, not a bad way to go. I have shown mine to the guys at the range and half love them and use them all the time. The others didn't care for them. Don't like it? Return it to Gander Mt.! I don't work for Versa-carry! They just came along with a solution to my problems!

I have been contemplating getting one of these for a while now. I currently have a gp100 that this would compliment. I wouldn't need it for conceal carry as I have an xds for that purpose. How do you guys feel as far as longevity. This would be a range gun/ general purpose gun. Would I be better served for money buying a Taurus?

JavalinaBlanco... I owned the .357 LCR since they first came out. I traded it for the 9mm LCR. I can't speak for the hammer version but I can tell you, with care, the LCR I have now will last as long as my Ruger SP101. I'm also confident that should it not, Ruger's Customer Service will fix any errors they created. I don't think you can go wrong with a Ruger.

I sold both my Taurus guns and I won't be going back for any. I've read far too many threads on their quality issues. To each his own I guess. I really wanted a Heizer Double-Tap .45 ACP. I got as many opinions as I could before the purchase, (including THR). My homework paid off, (I never bought one). You've taken the first step in buying a gun already!

No
Ruger quality is much more consistant than Taurus. If you ever need to send it in for service, (less likely with Ruger) Ruger will fix it the first time and have it back to you in a couple of weeks. Taurus will have your gun for 6 months with a good chance it will be returned to you without being fixed.

Just the other day I saw one of these in a local gun store. Looks great I didn't handle it for fear of leaving with it lol, gotta pay off some bills before another gun purchase
