With the length shortened on the 45 gap from a 45 ACP, would it be possible to make a Browning High Power pistol firing the 46 gap? I know the magazine might have to be single stack, but could you get away with it in the same size frame?

Theoretically, yes. Practically, most of us aren't qualified to answer.

The .45GAP will physically fit in the frame lengthwise and can probably be made to fit widthwise as well. However whether the frame and slide are actually strong enough to hand the load is the real question. My guess is that it will require the same sort of redesign that .40 required. And people already complain that a .40 hipower doesn't feel as good as a 9mm.

I could be done. .45 GAP really wouldn't put more stress on the gun than .40 S&W would, I don't think. Basically, you could just bore out a .40 S&W BHP and maybe design some new mags for it. 10+1 of .45 GAP should be do-able.

I personally don't see a need for it, there are many wonderfull platforms for the .45 ACP, and many upcoming platforms for the .45 GAP. The BHP's best selling point, is that it's one of only 2 (that I can think of) pistols that fall into the category of well built, SA, Hi-Cap 9mm. the only other I can think of is a CZ75.

17+1 rounds in a SA semi auto that feels like silk in my hand is why I've wanted a BHP for a long time, and I why I finally settled for a good quality clone (FEG PJK-9HP) when I couldn't afford what I wanted.

So as to the question of .45 GAP, I answer, "WHY?"

Better yet, a Gap in a double stacked 1911. Perhaps that 1/8" difference could make them feel less like a brick.
The grip of a high power and the action of a 1911...I like it. :)

honestly, a .45 gap BHP would cost less than a from the ground up 1911 designed for 9mm length rounds (which is a long time coming.)

I'd give my left arm for a .45 GAP BHP. seriously.

Ned Christianson commented on this over on the 1911 Forum. He seemed to be quite intrigued with the idea and didn't sem to think it would be that complicated or super expensive.

A long time ago there was a desire to convert the BHP to 45acp. It can't be done ,not for the length but for the diameter. The best you can do is 40 caliber. Besides there is no magic to the 45gap . The 40 S&W works fine!

I've never handled a .40S&W BHP. Well, one time I did, but I couldn't tell any difference, that was about a year ago. Is the grip width the same as the 9mm? I might have to go down to the gunshop on Main Street tomorrow and verify this. If it IS the same, why do people claim it "feels different". And if not, why couldn't you fit 10+1 of .45GAP into a SLIGHTLY wider double stacked magazine/grip?

I've handled a couple of .40s. The grip is the same, since the frame of a .40 is the same as the frame on a 9mm (excepting the ejector). The difference in "feel" for me is that the slide is wider. To me (I know, it's subjective), it's a little more nose heavy. It's also harder to rack.

I wouldn't mind one, but I'm no fan of the .40 S&W... But I could sure go for one if I could have the barrel changed for .357 SiG.

As for one in .45 GAP, it'd probably take a redesign of bigger proportions than the .40. It would probably be sized right between a BHP 9mm and a 1911. Kind of a cool idea, I guess -- if you've got the clout to talk FN into it.
