I'm not sure what to do... I have a 25 wssm and do not reload which means no available ammo but I really like the 110-120 grain round. What would be a comparable cartridge? Short action preferred. Mainly whitetail. Thanks

Theres a bunch of cartridges that are basically right there. If you want short action then 260 Rem or 270 WSM. If you want 257 and SPEED then 257 Weatherby magnum. Also 257 Roberts, 243 Win, 6.5 Rem Mag.

I wouldn't buy a 25 WSSM, but since you already have one it'd be cheaper to just keep it and start re-loading for it rather than buying something else.

Another vote for start reloading! If you can get brass and like the gun/cartridge combo you'll probably like loading and hunting/shooting your own ammo.

so yes...start reloading! :D

The best option is to start reloading. If your unable to locate components for a given cartridge, then that cartridge is never going to be a viable option to own and shoot. In other words, if reloading components can't be located, primarily brass, it's going to be a wall hanger. Cause your sure not going to find any factory ammo, and if you do locate some, it's likely going to be very, very expensive.

Or you can put it up on a local trading forum and trade it for something you'd be able to actually use. WSSM brass is expensive. It is almost not even worth it to reload the cartridge, unless your already deeply invested in it.

What rifle?

Problem with reloading is ... ok, nothing really, but you may just not be willing to dive into that, so it isn't on the table.

Problem with trading/selling is that if YOU don't want it, that's going to be a hard item to swap or sell for almost any value to anyone else. If you can't find ammo, how will they? You might get lucky and find a reloader who'll play with that cartridge, but it will be a pain for whomever ends up with it.

You absolutely COULD put a few hundred bux into it and have a new barrel installed in a cartridge you like. Your gunsmith can tell you what other cartridges will work with your action length, mag feed lips, and bolt face (or if you can swap bolt faces).

25 wssm isnt short action though?.. its shorter, arent those made to fit in AR-15 size actions?

Selling/trading is an option. The problem is finding someone who will actually buy the rifle at any price. It is hard to give those away. If it were mine I'd just keep it rather than give it away for next to nothing. Who knows, 50 years from now they might actually be worth a small fortune. In the meantime reloading for it is about the only option. If the OP doesn't want to load for it, then just set it back and see what the future holds and buy something else to actually use.

There is something to be said for buying a rifle in a caliber that has "stood the test of time".
I considered buying one or two of the new calibers but am glad that I didn't. Your post makes me feel better about not doing it.
Thanks,
Lafitte

I would say .25-06, but it's neither short-action nor a magnum.

That's a tough one....

Reload. If you have any ammo, then you have the brass to reload. If not, it is available. I just made a quick Google check, and found brass available at GunBroker ... it's quite expensive, though, at $135/100 cases.

Not willing to reload? Sell or trade it for something more common and affordable. Nothing wrong with .243 for whitetail.

I hope this helps.

I too have a .25 WSSM & have been looking for ammo for quite a while. Fortunately I have several boxes of Winchester 110 grain Accubond factory ammo to get me through until I start reloading. I also have 150 new Winchester. unprimed brass for my .25 WSSM.
I got tired of constantly looking for ammo, brass, bullets, etc & decided to go to the source 'Winchester' for some answers, so I e-mailed Winchester twice.
Winchester's first reply informed me that they have discontinued the 110 grain Accubond CT, which is my favorite factory load. They suggested I switch to the 115 grain Ballistic Silver-Tip, I have used this ammo in the past, but I prefer the Accubonds.
Winchester's second reply informed me that all .25 WSSM is currently out of stock, like I hadn't figured that out for myself. Winchester says that the 115 grain Ballistic-Tip & unprimed brass for the .25 WSSM is" scheduled for production later in 2015".
