Deer...hogs...sized game.

It will be scoped.

Is there much loss between a 20 inch barrel and a 16.5 barrel?

Thanks....Bexar

I also hunt with my FNAR, however keep in mind that loaded and scoped it weighs ~10#. I don't mind the weight, but for some 10# is too heavy.

At the distances here in the Midwest at which you'd typically hunt hogs and deer, the velocity differential (loss) between 20" & 16.5" barrels is insignificant. And with good quality hunting ammo, there would be no terminal difference that the hog or deer would notice.

For shooting way across a canyon at, e.g., a mule deer, it's another matter.

You'd also see somewhat of a weight reduction going with the shorter tube, and portability certainly improves.

That FN-AR looks good. What kind of accuracy and reliability have y'all experienced?

Mine's a freakin' laser.

If you are looking at one seriously I should mention a couple of the drawbacks so that you are fully informed.

The mags are expensive
It is a PITA to disassemble

How expensive and are they readily available? I'd probably need three max. I assume 20 rounds. I'd like an extra mag for hogs as it can become an East Texas OK Corral if a group is run into along a river bottom.

I went to an auction site and they were in that range. 10 round we're $65.00 give a nickel.

Do y'all have the 16" or 20" version?

I was actually thinking about the BAR when I asked my original question.

My Daughter will be the primary user but I likes it. :D

Thanks for the birddog on my question.

Bexar,
Have you thought of an m1a? I took a deer with my M1a a few years ago... 10 and 20 rd mags can be had. Sadlak scope mounts are the way to go with them.
I have a standard model... not match or anything and I can get 1.5" groups at 100 yards. It's the ultimate .308 Battle a rifle IMHO

I'd go with a mp10.
She has an M&P15 she got for her 18th birthday and the M&P 10 has an 18" barrel which I would consider the minimum length. That's another model consideration; however, that FNAR does sound good.

Yes...more than once; especially, since she's an M-1 Garand nut almost as bad as I am.

Do y'all see a pattern? So many choices, hence, the question originally posted. And then they gotta drop that FNAR in the mix.

The only thing I didn't care about the M1A is the scope mount system and I've heard mixed reviews on quality.

Thanks.

My M&P 10 is nice and light for the field. Lightweight contour barrel is accurate when cool.

I really wanted the M1a and a buddy of mine bought one the same time I got my DPMS. The M1a is not near as accurate but feels like it is half the weight in the hands.
Just couldn't part with the extra $500 or so for the M1a over the AR10.

Browning BAR short trac in .308. Light and great for hunting.
Also known as an FNAR with flush mags and a straight stock ;). Both are excellent, with an edge for the FNAR for hogs simply due to its 20rnd box mags.
