I live in central Indiana. I have my important firearms stored in a safe. I have a few bags of silica gel in there to soak up any humidity. All of my rifles have Hoppes 9 gun bore cleaner lined in the bores.
The reason I'm concerned is because I few months ago, I discovered my M1a had slight pitting in the barrel. As my gun collection grows, I want to make sure I'm providing them proper care.
thoughts?
thanks

I wouldn't use bore cleaner for storage. I would use something made to fight rust, like Eezox or CLP.

as said before, hoppes9 isnt a rust preventative/ lube.....its a cleaner.

a lot of people like using those silicon gun socks in conjunction with a light coat of oil and a desiccant in the safe.

Did you shoot corrosive ammo in the Garand by chance? The corrosive salts will pull water out of the air when it's humid and rust under oil.

Hoppes isn't water based and isn't a great corrosive cleaner.

I realize hoppes bore cleaner isn't made to prevent rust, but if the bore has a healthy coating, along with the fact that it's in a safe with silica, will it be ok?
I just like to use what I have

Get some CLP, then you'll have it. Then you'll be using what you have. :D

For longterm storage definitely use a dehumidifier of some sort. My safe has a power source wired into it so I bought an electric one that is specifically made for gun safes. Also if you want to keep something in the bore store it bore side down and I reccomend using Kroil on a cotton patch. Run a Kroil soaked patch down the bore twice and store it bore side down. You won't have problems doing that

Bore cleaner usually has ammonia to remove copper and lead. Ammonia achieves this purpose by being corrosive. So you want that corrosive property for cleaning.

But you do not want to store your bores long term with a corrosive coating. You want the opposite, something that is anti corrosive.

If you really want to use what you already have, then use motor oil.

But really, if you have a lot of money into your firearms, and you love them dearly, like the way most us do, then it is worth spending $10 on a bottle of CLP and treating the bores and exteriors of your guns.

Everyone is tellin you it's not "OK"

Bore cleaner is not a rust preventative

Buy a quart of Mobil 1 motor oil and you'll have a lifetime supply of a good rust preventative and lubricant

What type of clp am I looking for? Can it be,found at a walmart or lowes? I thought there were different types. Please share. Link so that tomorrow after work I can go and run it down my bores for storage.
thanks.

PS-I love my firearms.... just never been super informed on storage. I used to live in AZ, so rust wasn't really an issue. Just need to know what I can put on the bore after I CleaN it for storage till my next range day!

Use what's called for. If you want to keep your bores from rusting, use some gun oil. It's not like you won't find other uses for it.

The cost of a bottle of oil will be nothing compared to the cost of rebarreling even one of your guns.

Pretty much any oil/light grease will work. Had a relative that used cooking oil on his blued rifles for years (here in the wet pacific northwest) and he never had any rust issues...

Please don't think I'm opposed to buying any type of gun oil. I was just thinking that if hoppes could do the job, then I'd use it since its what I have.
I will get some CLP or Remington oil tomorrow after work.

If they have it where you will go shopping, please consider this product, it does a very good job in and on all my guns.

I do not work for them. It is more expensive than other products up here, but it does a good job and I like its smell!

Be careful, it is not safe on painted parts.

Actually, it is. I've never had a rust issue, and this is all I ever put in a bore. The back of the label also suggests running a soaked patch down the bore for storage. I do, it works, no rust.
