Indecision over a 9mm Colt 1911

Several times I have thought about a Colt Government in 9mm but every time something else comes along. For me it would be an older series 70 gun maybe in blued steel.

9mm 1911's are great for doing some fun shooting at the range. For me it's no contest among the choices given, hands down, I'd go with the XSE Lightweight Commander in 9mm, it's a great carry gun you can shoot good targets with!

"Lightweight" and "9mm" seem like a good combo.

Guess it depends on the roll it will fill.

Range/target - Blued government
Carry or HD/SD- lightweight commander
Just because - stainless government

Colt has previously made blued Government and Commander models in 9mm. I would buy one of the three stainless models that have not previously been produced.

I would get the 1991A1 5" and cut a trail to my gunsmith to have it customized.
Oh, wait, that's what I did some years ago when a few slipped out.

Not to derail this thread but Jim what did you have done and if you had a pic I wouldn't mind seeing it

I don't have a picture handy, but it has a beavertail grip safety, extended thumb safety, mag well funnel, fibre optic front sight, King's NM rear sight; all I need for IDPA ESP.
You could buy the XSE and put a mag well funnel on it and have the same effect.

I have an XSE Lightweight Commander in .38 Super, along with a 9mm. barrel assembly, and I love it. Perfectly set-up with all the features I want on a 1911 and great for both the range and for concealed carry.

This ^^^ I like the 38 Super 9mm combo more back for the buck, had one in a blued Commander should of never let it get away. Used Blue Dot in the 38 Super fun to shoot.

I voted XSE Goverment because I have one and love it.

The price premium over the 1991 is tiny when you consider the number of upgrades the XSE has.

I'd go with the XSE Lightweight Commander in 9mm for a carry gun. For the best 9mm 1911 for primarily range purpose, I'd want adjustable sights on it, so I'd have to go non-Colt; a DW Pointman 9, or an STI Trojan 9mm, which I have and it is one of the best all around range guns that I have. Even a Springfield Range Officer 9mm would work great for you.

I bought a blue 1991 Series Commander (Steel frame ) .45 ACP
last summer. I used to have a Combat Commander in the '70s
The 1991 grip safety must be higher because there is a notch for
the hammer to reside at full cock so unlike the 70s Series cmdr
which would bite the webb of the hand now and again, isn't an issue
with the 1991.

The alloy frame for weight reduction would be nice & chambered for
9x19 seems the combo

Wilson Combat makes 10 rd mags for them

I agree, at one time I talked myself into a conversion kit for my Commander to 9mm with the idea hubby and I could use the same ammunition. I couldn't change it back to 38 Super fast enough!

I have long been of the opinion that a good quality 9mm Commander Length 1911 is the single best semiautomatic pistol to own. Go shoot a Wilson Combat 9mm Professional (4" barrel, just 1/4" shorter than a true commander), and you'll see what I mean! It carries and shoots fantastically! I wanted to buy the one I tried out but the $3K price tag is way out of my budget!

And a Gov't Length 9mm 1911 is also a lot of fun to shoot at the range. Relatively low ammo cost, and with 147 gr. subsonic ammo, the recoil is negligible, it almost feels like you are shooting .22LR. Everybody enjoys shooting my STI Trojan 9mm

I do agree that a .45 ACP 1911 is probably better overall than a 9mm version. The.38 Super and 10mm are both great choices for a 1911, but obviously the ammo cost would dictate that you reload for those calibers.

This is a timely thread, as I'm in the same dilemma. Wish I could get them all.

I voted for the Lightweight Commander. But I have been lusting for a Defender in 9mm for a while now.

A 9mm Lightweight Commander would be a joy to shoot AND carry, so I voted for that. Apparently a lot of other folks did as well.

I have the lightweight defender as my carry gun. If you are not going to carry then go with the full size SS XSE. In the full size gun I like the recoil better in the standard weight, but if you are talking about a carry gun then go with light weight stainless XSE but in a commander model.

I voted blue Commander since I have a 2009 XSE LW Commander in 38 Super and fit a 9mm Nowlin barrel and bushing to it. A lightweight Commander in 9mm would be nice.

My last purchase was a Springfield Range Officer.
5" 9mm (because WWB is 26$ a box)
Now I can't stop shooting the damn thing.
They make a range officer champion in 4" as well
It also has better sights for carrying. My RO model
Has real bulky and sharp target sights. But for a
Range toy? It is just awesome.
