642 Club Part Three

I actually like the stock grips on this little guy. It's been in my front pocket all day and I've hardly noticed it.

If I didn't hand load I might consider different grips. More shooting never hurt a thing (except my trigger finger). My hand isn't (very) sore and got a good feel for the 642 today. With more range time I'll start bumping up the load to something more serious.

Curious what loads others are using in their 642? I've been using 125 gr. plated bullets but I'm thinking the 158 gr. bullets may be in my future.

Don't really know, sir. Mostly just use factory ammo, but then I've got a huge pickle glass jar still almost full of flat-nose wadcutters. I don't know much about them as the friend that gave them to me is no longer with us. He gave them to me because he had transitioned from .38 special weapons to something else. They seem to work well, about as accurate as some of the box ammo, and recoil is the same.

Sappyg
I run 148 gr. HBWC upside-down, with enough Unique to get 800-900 f.p.s.
The bullets are hard cast in a N.O.E. 360 148gr WC RG2 mold.

Oh yea!
I would like to be in the club also. :)

I've been working with a Charter Arms .44 special Bulldog lately as a possible replacement for my 642-1.

But, in the meantime, I still CCW this gun daily. I use Speer Gold Dot .38 special +P 135 grain Short Barrel loads in the gun, with a Bianchi Speed Strip loaded with five rounds of the same. I don't use a "holster" per say, but a set of black Barami Hip-Grips paired with an aluminum Tyler-T grip adapter. Works very well.

I will soon the "joining" the 642 Club; my used lock 642 should arrive at my LGS sometime this week.
Although I have mostly semi-autos I have a couple of Model 10's and one well worn 1905 Hand Ejector -- I do like the S&W .38's. This will be my first snubbie, and I'll report back in a few weeks with pics and a brief range report.

I use 158gr lead SWC reloads for practice and use W231 at max published standard pressure load data, shoots POA.

I also load 140gr Hornady XTP on top of AA#5 again near max but in +P load data. This shoots similar to the Speer Short Barrel 135gr load that I carry.

I love my 642 and carry it every day, mostly in an ankle holster or appendix but it does see occational pocket carry depending on how I am dressed.I don't own a traditional IWB or OWB holster for it.

The 642/442 needs to be practiced with, I expect this will be the only gun I will ever wear out, but that won't be for years to come.

Stopping By

Checking in to say hello. One of the early adopters around these parts.
Had a Centennial J Frame out today for a spin, M&P 340. What a great shooter and I was "on". Outdoor range to ourselves today so we were able to run and gun in some active drills.

Hope you are all well and keeping the X42 Thread alive and well.

MSAA, at ease...smoke m if you gottem.

I purchased my 642 about three weeks after moving to Florida back in 1997, I recently purchased a new 442 no lock, I love my J frames, they just work.

Happy Belated Birthday

Just wanted to wish the 642 Club a happy belated birthday!
(I still pocket carry mine in my Mika round-cut.)

Happy 10 years! (May 13, 2005)

Just bought my 642 today. Put 50 rounds through it. I really like the trigger on this gun, it's got some kick as expected.

Ordered an Aholster pocket holster, and I may pick up an Alien Gear IWB holster for it too.

Don't know if I've posted to this thread but an S&W 442 has been my edc for years now.
I usually stoke it with the old FBI load but there is a mix of Hydra-shok and Gold Dots in there as well. I carry it most often in a Lobo Leather IWB but when I'm really dressing down I stick it in my pocket in a DeSantis Nemesis. I always carry at least one reload in a speed strip.

Recieved my newest J frame

I had a 442 that I really liked, but sold it to move on to something else. Big mistake. I recently saw a great sale on the 642 at a gun shop, and got it for well under $400. It's great having another J frame Smith.

Another 642 owner here. So easy to carry, makes me much more likely to be carrying may be the best feature.

Well, fiVe, my friend, and club members, I haven't been here in a long, long time. And back then, it was under a different user name that I've now retired. My membership goes all the way back to the early days of part 1 with DA (MSAA), who posted just upstream.

Still got my 642. Probably will never let it go (even though I'm likely to add a Ruger SR9C soon).

Delighted to see the club still going. I'll hang out ....

Well, merely a week from my last post, just above, where I said I'd probably never let go of my 642, a sharp turn of events has driven a sharp change of mind. Long complicated story; I'll save you the reading.

But I'm likely to have to let it go, along with two holsters (OWB and Mica pocket) and an extra set of grips (Hogue monogrips). Still deciding a fair price to ask, but I have some ideas after talking with my local gun shop on Friday.

Our MSAA, DA, makes a fine point about snubs.

Someday, perhaps, when life settles into one place for me and I have sufficient cash flow (I did say, "perhaps"), I hope to add one of these little air weights back to the kit as a back up. No doubt, they're fine revolvers, demonstrated by the fact that I've kept mine for so long.

How many of your 642s shoot to point of aim? I just sent mine back to S&W to have the windage fixed. It was always printing to the left. (About 2.5" @ 10 yds.) I hope they straighten it out, I hate holding Kentucky windage on a defensive revolver.
