How to get back into the hobby?

You haven't said what aspects of "the hobby" mean the most to you, other than your reference to a .22.

If plinking is most important: replace your .22(s).
If small game hunting or clay birds is most important: get a pump-action 12 gauge.
If big game hunting is most important: get a bolt-action rifle (or a slug barrel for your 12 gauge).
If handgunning is important: I'd opt for a .357 revolver.
If self defense: get a quality 9mm (or .40).

And I'd get an inexpensive reloading setup ... like a Lee Classic Turret. You have a wide range of options--from cheap plinking to self-defense to hunting--with a .357 revolver and a reloading press.

You can get via ammobot.net places selling 22 LR and order online. Not too hard to find 22 LR for 10 cents a round. Still fairly inexpensive compared to center fire. Id looks to get a 22 rifle of some kind. I personally like lever actions and the Henry's and Brownings are good choices. If your budget is tight save the money and get the Henry. You won't wear it out. Another good choice is a ruger 10-22.

The second item I'd get would be a pump action shotgun (Mossberg 500 or Remington 870). Thta way you have something for shooting clays which is lots of fun and home defense. You can also hunt bird and beast with a shotgun. Its not too hard to find birdshot at the price of $65 for 250 rounds which is on the order of 25 cents a round. You only need a box of 25 of buck shot for home defense and a few boxes per year to practice with just to,brush up on the recoil of buck vs bird. In fact, I could see getting a shotgun first.

Congrats on the home. I think selling the guns to buy a home was a wise move.

Get a handgun and a carbine in the same caliber. Then get a shotgun. There ya go three fun guns for not a ton of money (potentially).

If I were starting over, I'd buy one quality carbine, one quality bolt gun, one quality shotgun, one quality .22LR, one quality carry gun, and a closet full of ammo.

Hook up with the feller a few threads up who is selling off his collection. trying to cut the cord.

I guess he changed his mind. He hasn't returned since Monday and has 1 post total.

Anybody wanting to shed their collection is likely a bit conflicted. That's a tough choice.
I noticed as my grandmother got older she gave away lots of nice things. Maybe it's part of simplifying things as you get older or just trying to clean things up before one passes. I myself am in the process of trading my collection around to simplify. No regrets over the last two or three years in doing so.

Hey all, thanks for all the replies!

To answer some questions:

"Reasonable finances" to me means being able to be a gun guy again without taking too much away from my other hobbies. (Photography, gaming).

I didn't hunt. So i guess plinking and HD\Carry (although there's no rush for HD\carry as I'm in a safe town and learned how to avoid and de-escalate before shooting) would be my priorities. (A Model 60 and carry pistol would be ideal).

I shot steel with 9mm and rimfire almost twice a month during the height of my gun love.

I love the airgun idea. But my home isn't large enough to provide a airgun gallery and i have a chain link fence for now. I'd worry about ricochets at my poor neighbors.
