Kinda mad at myself for letting an older 99 in .308 slide by. Used, it had killer patina.
Neat old rifle.

Would have been cool to pop a deer with it.
I love mine -- it's the ultimate deer rifle/cartridge combo.

When handloading, though, keep below maximum -- the 99 does not have the camming power of a bolt action, and you can get an occasional failure to extract.

Marlin 1895SS 45/70, whitetails and hogs when hunting in the woods. Very effective and with the lower power rounds doesn't mess up too much meat.

Marlin 1895 in 45/70 is my favorite also have a Rossi 1892 in .480 Ruger that's very good. Both are used for deer and hogs here in Louisiana.

Henry Rifles

I used to build and fly R/C Model Aircraft.

Many in the club were very wealthy. They would spend the entire time trying to fly one of their planes that cost lots of $$$$$.

There was one fellow who had the most basic setup-very modest.

He flew ALL day EVERY day.

Henry rifles are just like him. Many have spent thousands for their stuff.

Those with Henry Rifles just keep shooting them-in rain, sleet and snow.

"takes a licking and keeps on ticking."

I still take my dads old Winchester model 94 in .30 WCF out deer hunting, I learned to shoot with this rifle and enjoy reminiscing about hunting with my dad through the years.

Model 99 Savage. I have 2. One is 300 Savage the other 308 Winchester. I like the 300 Savage best. Both have 1950's era K-4 Weaver scopes and have never been out of zero since Dad bought them in 1956.

Have a beater Model 94 Ranger in 30/30 that I picked up for cheap and slapped a set of XS ghost ring sights on; area around camp was logged quite a bit about 6-7 years ago, and the deer just love bedding in the resulting clumps of jack spruce. Almost bayonet range. ;)

She's a beater only in appearance; points, shoots and handles like a dream in the thick stuff.

montanaoffroader, is that a .30-40 Krag in your photo?

I'm a fan of the Krag rifle and the .30-40 cartridge. I'd like to try an 1895 winchester in .30-40 one of these days...

Anyway my favorite lever gun is the model 94 winchester in .30-30, I like the 170gr bullets, sounds like pretty much the same thing as the OP.

Savage 99 comes in close second, it's a great rifle too

I love my Winchester model 94's, 30-30's excellent rifles and just get the job done! they have been a winning hand for years! I also own a marlin 336w and its a solid rifle but I enjoy the Winchester name, to me the 30-30 is really all you need for most situations here in Oklahoma! :)

I have a marlin 39a from the 50's that one of my son's just about destroyed and a Winchester 9410 that is not even good enough to kill a can at 15 yards but a pretty gun. but my favorite lever gun has to be an old marlin .410 from the 20's that has been the doom of no telling how many squirrels. it will out shoot the 9410 bad.

I have one lever action, a Marlin 336CS 30-30 I bought in 1985. Not long after I bought the rifle I stopped hunting so it has had 10 to 15 rounds shot through it. It was and I'm sure still is very accurate. I shot it a few times with the iron sights then put a scope on it and sighted it in but haven't shot it since.

I like hunting whitetails with my Savage Model 99 chambered in .358 Winchester and my Winchester Model 1886 "Extra Light Weight" repo (Miroku) chambered in .45-70 Government. For squirrels and tin cans, my favorite lever-action rifle is the Marlin Model 39.
