Evening all,

I'm looking for suggestions/recommendations on a Traditionally mounted .308 Scope with a BDC or Mil-Dot reticle for a Ruger Gunsite .308.

I'll be using an XS picatinny rail.

Any and all input/suggestions or critique appreciated. Pics of your setup appreciated. Even if you use a forward mounted "Scout Scope" set up. Truth be told, I'm unfamiliar with scout scopes and prefer to go with what I know.

Looking for something compact, lightweight and dead-on out to 400 yards.

Thanks in advance.

You can do anything at 400 yards with a Leupold 2-7x variable.
Nice compact scope would go well with that rifle.

Wide field of view at 2x, and 400 \ 7x = 57 yards apparent distance to target.

You can probably throw a rock that far and hit something!!

Just curious-why the XS and not the rings that come with it? Without the forward rail and the XS you'd save a good amount of weight, yet it seems a lot of people prefer the xs.

I'd suggest a Redfield Revolution with the accu-range reticle, maybe the 3x9. Very light but durable scope made by Leupold in the US. I've had great luck with them on a Browning A-Bolt, M&P10, and a VEPR.

Thanks for the input.

I chose the XS rail because I like having iron sights with a scope mounted in the traditional location. Mounting the scope over the receiver (without the XS rail) requires removal of the rear sight.

I realize that the rifle was designed with the "Scout" concept in mind.
I'm not all that interested in the idea.

I just like the rifle because its short and handy with a powerful round.

Thanks again :)

I think you're wise to mount the scope conventionally. I'd be torn between any decent quality 1-4X20 or 2-7X32 scope. The Redfield and Leupold suggestions are solid choices. Redfield doesn't offer a 1-4X and Leupold offers several price levels. I've used the VX-1 and it is good enough for me.

The 1-4X option is amazingly fast for close work on 1X. Far better than the forward mounted scopes or dots. On 4X it will still work at 400 yards, but would be best at closer ranges.

The 2-7X option gives up a little speed up close, but you gain some precision at longer ranges. No need to go with any more magnification on this rifle.

If it were mine, I'd save the money and weight and just use Ruger rings conventionally and forget about the irons. At most I might zero the irons, take them off and carry them in a daypack. With a multi-tool the pre zeroed rear sight can be back on in less than a minute if needed.

I've had great results ringing steel out to 500 or so with a Burris 1-4x MTAC on my PTR-91SC "carbine"*

While it's a completely different style of rifle, it's the same round, and barrel length.

*I put Carbine in quotes because that's what PTR calls it, but it's awful big and heavy for that designation.

ETA: Since you asked about BDC's, on my 16" .308, with Remington Match grade 168gr SMK the BDC is within 2" (or so) out past 400, then opens up to about 10" high at 500. With 147gr surplus (M80) loads It's pretty much dead on to about 350m, about 4" high at 400 and about a foot at 500. I don't shoot this gun for groups, so that's me shooting either kneeling or prone unsupported, and looking at where the splatters on the steel are.

I put a Leupold VX6 1-6 with an Illuminated Dot German #4 on mine. I also used the XS rail. Love the set up. Now I plan on adding some Warne QD rings so I can use the XS sight also. Little oversight of mine when I first got the gun. The optical clarity of the VX6 is great if you can swallow the price. And the illuminated dot makes for easy quick shots if you are practicing at the range, or possibly if you are hog hunting in some brush.

Don't want to change the subject. I have the same rifle but not sure what thus xs rail is. Sorry new guy.

I like the small 2 to 7 class scopes, something under 40 mm objective lens.

I have a 1-4 on mine, and for hunting here it is great. No issues. Something low profile, probably under 10 on the top end magnification.

XS rail on mine, with scope mounted in regular position; it is nice to still retain iron sights.

The XS rail option is a great way to go. I placed one on my marlin lever gun and have used it in both the standard and scout mode. It is overkill for me though. I'm a scout convert. Once I tried it I haven't looked back.

Now back to the question. I agree with the above that you can't go wrong with a solid 2-7 scope. I can recommend the Redfield Revolution as a great affordable scope.

I tried a scout scope on my Ruger Frontier rifle and did not like. I am much faster with both eyes open thru my Nikon Monarch 1-4x at 1 power and at 4 power it works well for any distance I will shoot. I put a 2-8x Nikon on my backup 30-06 (Guide gun.) For my hunting style and range work I find no value in a scope setting higher than 6x.

I love my GSR with the Leupold 2.5x Scout scope, 3/4" groups from the bench at 100 yards. Deer DRT running through the Appalachian hardwoods during deer season on several occasions. :)

If I didn't like the Scout setup I'd happily use a Leupold 3-9x scope on the little rifle, there's a reason it's one of the most popular scopes out there.

So your going with see thru rings, with jron sites. Don't using the high high rings pull your head up to much?

My favorite way of using my GSR was with the factory sights. I liked it better than the scout scope set up I tried. Then my eyes hit that time in my life where the GSR ghost ring doesn't help me focus on the front sight anymore.

So, last fall I tried a 1.5-5x20 I already had. I liked how easy it is to use at 1.5x, the view is very large at the low end. However, I also had a 2-7x32 with better glass that gave less glare and is easier on my eyes. So, that is what I have on it now.

The reticle on the 2-7x32 Nikon is a simple duplex.

Here are two pics of it using #3 and #4 Ruger rings. The gun came with #4 and #5.

I can't say yet. I'd like to find a scope setup that would allow use with irons. It's a "new to me" rifle. Maybe quick release mounts? In case of scope failure, IDK? I'm trying to figure it out. :)

I just got it back from Ruger today. Their Customer Service is second to none!

Here's where I'm at now. I attached a no-name Nikon scope that came with a Rem 700. I'm going to use it tomorrow for load development.

Thanks again to everyone that has shared their input. I appreciate it. :)

I have many Rugers and would use Ruger rings or Warne quick release that fit the Ruger cutouts. Keep the zeroed rear sight in your pack if you want to use it. I run peeps & scopes on a few Rugers and if you are consistent removing & reinstalling, zero won't be a problem.

Been popping pigs with my rig for a while now. I put a 3x9 Leupold with Firedot on it and it's become one of my favorite hunting rifles.

I'm thinking really hard about buying a Nightforce 2.5-10x32 with a Mil-Dot reticle.

The scope I'm using now has a duplex reticle. I've learned where on the reticle I need to holdover for shots out to 280 yards.

With my reloads, I'm getting 16" of drop at 280 yards from my 100 yard zero. Plugging info into a trajectory calculator tells me that at 400 yards, the difference would be 51"

Curious how y'all are adjusting for elevation without quick adjust turrets or marked reticules like BDC, Mil-Dot, MOAR etc.

Thanks

Here's my Ruger Guide Gun (30-06) with a Nikon 2-8x Monarch 3. Great combination although I never shoot it set at over 6x. These are Ruger 3 & 4 rings which the factory swapped me for my 4 & 5 stainless rings. I sight in 2.75" high at 100 yds and can hold dead on out to my MPBR of 270 yds. However, in almost 60 years of hunting I have never shot that far. One whitetail died at 165 paces and all my other deer and seven bull elk fell dead between 20 and 75 yds. Hunt close.

My scout setup, a Nikon Force FX pistol scope with Warne QD rings. With good loads, it can shoot MOA groups out to 200 yards. Mine likes Federal 150gr blue box loads, but I just took it out today to work on custom handloads. Yes, mine is left-handed.

That particlar hog's head is hanging right next to my TV.

Don't know what you are trying to do. Punch paper or hunt? Nightforce are quality scopes but heavy. That scope is well over a pound and you'll need 30mm rings. They are tough & will track accurately. 51" drop at 400yds from a 100yd zero seems excessive. Don't know what bullet/velocity you are using but I would expect significantly less drop.

I got my Ruger G.S.R. a few years ago & put a cheap Barska scope on it. Last year I was able to come up with the money for a better scope. I found a Nikon Pro Staff 4×14×40mm with BDC. I have not done much shooting since I got it. But it is very clear & bright! It is not top of the line, but it is a very nice scope & I am very happy with it!
