Thinking about picking up a semi .308. I checked out the PTR91, the DSA FAL, and the Springfield Scout Squad. I have issue with each platform. So I started looking at the AR10 platform. I like the ergos of the AR10 and seem to be lighter than the platforms I mentioned. In doing some online research I saw that I can piece together a PSA AR10 for about $900. That's with an 18 or 20 inch barrel, which I'd prefer with the .308 round (7.62). I see DPMS and Armalite produce this platform for about $1,000, but they all seem to have 16 inch barrels. So here's my question: will a PSA AR10 hold up to hard use? Anyone with any experience in this area? Thanks.

I havnt really seen any in depth reviews of PSA's AR10. I also wouldnt buy a S&W AR10, due to the fact that they wont sell you parts. Take a look at the FNAR. Pinpoint accurate, but maybe too "civvy" for you.

I have also been looking at them

I would buy a complete upper, vs building it

I would also buy their kits that fit the lower

According to the boards, people have had issues with compatability
with other "DPMS" offerings

I bought a PSA PA-10 Stainless Steel with 18" barrel. I bought the complete upper plus complete lower and just pinned them together. I have had several issues with it, primarily failing to go into battery properly every time as well as some ejection issues. To be fair to PSA I have not yet sent the rifle back to them to give them an opportunity to repair it and make it right, instead trying to work out the issues myself. However, I have 1 or 2 more tricks to try then if unsuccessful will send back to PSA. If you do a search on several of the forums or youtube, you will see that the issues I am experiencing are common with the PA-10. Some guys report good success with PSA customer service, some not so good. All That being said, I have been very please with the quality of the PSA Ar-15 rifles and the overall quality of the PA-10 looks good if you ignore the issues I am describing. It does group very well, typically 1 to 1.5" groups with my military ball handloads.

Not necessarily true. They wouldn't sell one member on here parts because he split the barrel on his gun. That wasn't a failure of the rifle, and for their own liability I believe they couldn't just send him a new barrel, not knowing what else could have been damaged.

I built one using their 18" kit with MI SSK15G2 handguard on an Ares Signature 80% billet lower, and it has run flawlessly up to this point, though I'm still shy of 1K rounds. It was really tight as assembled, couldn't manually cycle rounds through it. But it ran fine from day one, and after the first range trip, everything loosened up enough to cycle it by hand. I'm running 25 round Pmags exclusively, and 90% of the ammo through it has been ZQI M80 ball. A few 155 and 168 gr. match loads, which are giving me 1.2 MOA average @ 100 yards for 10 shot groups using a cheapie 6x scope. Haven't yet tailored a load to this gun.

Overall I've very happy with it.

A friend built a virtually identical gun, and his was a little tighter, having some failures to go into battery during the first few mags. But it, too, loosened up, and the failures disappeared after about 150 rounds down range.

Not to "civvy" at all. In fact, I prefer a "non-military" style. The problem with the FN is that it is devoid of standard sites. Need a scope. Which is fine, but I want some iron sites.

He sent the gun to them as well. For a long time they still refused to replace the barrel, even when the gun was sitting inside their service center. Jackal is correct in what he said, in that they will not sell you parts. But it is worse than that because they won't automatically replace broken parts either.

Define hard use? Also what do you anticipate doing with the rifle and what expectations do you have for it.

Do a plonk test with the rounds you are having issues with. The throat in mine was very tight, and it had some issues with 150gr loads, and would jam up on longer bullets. If I pressed a round into the chamber by hand, I would have to pry it back out. For kicks, I tried some of the 125gr TNT loads I use in my slow-twist Remington 700, since they would drop out of the chamber easily. I was getting regular .75" groups with them, so I decided to keep the upper as-is rather than sending it back to PSA (they offered, I declined.)

After 1000 or so rounds, the chamber has opened up so the 150s are not an issue. It still likes the 125s better. This gun has become one of my favorites and I would definitely go that path if you are looking for a .308 autoloader.
