Where do you shoot ? In your backyard , shooting range , or some other place . I have been blessed with enough land that I have made my own pistol range in the woods in front of my home. I live in Onslow county N.C. Local law is that you can not discharge a firearm within 500 ft. of a residence . Rumor has it that the county manager and commissioners want to extend that to a half mile . If this comes to be , no one in our county will be able to use their own ranges or even fire their guns. Under the current regs I am totally legal. We have 2 0r 3 gun ranges in the county , charging 15 t0 $20 a day . I may shoot 1 to 2 hours a week, so I would be paying $20 to shoot 100 to 200 rounds. Really upset over this . Hope it does not become reality . Feel helpless . Sorry , just had to vent !!!!! Don't know how to fight this.

Im jealous of those who can shoot off their back porch - one day, I hope. In the meantime, theres a private (members only, but basically public can join) range about 10miles from home. $75/year is tough to beat.

Something similar happened to us. We were annexed into the city and it was illegal to discharge a firearm inside the city limits. No more shooting at home. When we moved 8 years ago we moved way out in the country so we would never have to deal with this again. Ranges can be nice. I got to meet a lot of people and see some interesting guns but there's no place like home for shooting.

i shoot in my back yard. i have to say i'd be a poor shot if i had to drag myself to a range.
i shoot most every day, but sometimes only 30 or 40 rounds.
going to a range would kill the fun for me.
i know others enjoy ranges. i'm happy they do.
i hate when others go out of their way to put barriers up against our fun.

Members only range. 100 yard range, 25 yard pistol range, 25 yard rimfire range and an action range to practice drawing from a holster.

10 min from the house and it's not too busy early in the morning on weekends.

candy, your range sounds fun, but only 25 yards for pistol?
do they have something against bulls eye?
you gotta shoot 25 n 50 yards for that.

As far as target shooting is concerned, most of the public land is legal to target shoot on, and Az. has a lot of public land. As far as private land owners are concerned, if they reside outside the city limits, and as long as they are at least a 1/4 mile away from an occupied structure, live stock, or stock pond, it's perfectly legal to target shoot.

In general though, it is legal to target shoot on most public lands as long as it's outside city limits, 1/4 mile from an occupied structure, stock pond, or live stock, unless officially posted by BLM or State Trust.

Our shooting ranges are quite inexpensive though, the shooting range I use is only $8 per day, or $60 for an annual membership. And the indoor ranges are $10 per day. We also have some public ranges that are free of any fee's, and they're actually pretty decent ranges.

National forest. 150yds away from anything. Drives the liberals here in CA absolutely nuts.

Can shoot 50 yards on the rifle range and I will from time to time. Only problem is no steel in front of 100 yards so I need my spotting scope for that!

Our local club is 5 miles from my house. It has two trap ranges, a sporting clays course (12 stands), pistol range to 35 yards, rifle range to 300 yards, with target frames at 25, 50, 100, 200 and 300 yards, plus a gong at the 300. We also have an archery range and a 6 bay action range for organized activities. The membership is $60.00 per year, $50.00 for over 65, and these are family memberships. There is no daily fee, and even with 800+ members, you can shoot by yourself on most weekdays.

Hope this helps.

Sadly all my old shooting locations are gone. Either the friend moved, sold, grew up or married a anti-gun wife. Lucky for me though, this spring the town's 100 yd. police range was opened to all full-time town employees whenever the police dept. is not using it and it's only 3 blocks from my house.

I've never had the opportunity to shoot at a modern indoor or outdoor range. maybe someday I'll have to try it out.

I shoot at an 88 acre gun club chartered in 1939 Ive been a member there since 1977... each range is enclosed at the bench or stand but the actual range back stops are outside.. each range has a range house with air conditioned seating, when you are not on line or want to grab a cold coke. WE have Big bore, black powder, small bore rifle, big bore pistol, and small bore pistol, we have archery and an archery field course through the woods, we have 20 table traps, we have , 2 skeet ranges, we have three trap ranges, we have tent camping grounds, we have a shot gun pattern range, we have air gun range and a 50 station through the woods field course.. we have picnic groves with bar b que grills, we have an air conditioned club house with office and fully staffed kitchen... we have free Breakfast with Santa, we have free Thanksgiving dinner, and we have a free annual club picnic.

We have orientation every Sunday, where fully vetted with back ground checks, both FBI and State and local back grounds are checked, no felons, no druggies, no violence charges. Once they go through the background checks, they have to take a 2 hour guided tour with an NRA sanctioned club officer. A tour and orientation to each range and the safety procedures before being accepted.. here is a group of sponsored, and vetted members taking the Sunday orientation there are 30 in this group.. which is very typical but every week I see 20 to 50 people at orientation , I am there every Sunday... If you notice there are men women and children taking the orientation... Our club continues to foster young people ( WE Teach boy scouts and girl scouts how to shoot ) they earn merit badges, we sponsor their over night week end encampments. ) and also women and families to enjoy the sport.. You just can't go on an orientation... you need to be sponsored by two members and a club officer and then only after a full back ground check are you invited to participate in an orientation.. WE try to make sure that the guy or girl next to you is a person of distinquished character.. there are no dirt bags at our club. No Hot dog shooters.... there is a lot of discipline, but you can take your kids here and feel that they are in a very safe environment.

Evil Twin, how much? Further the OP was asking what he can do to help keep the county commissioners off his backyard shooting facilities. My answer would be to contact them personally and let them know what you think, as well as getting other members of your community involved in setting the tone.

Club indoor pistol/rimfire range is $100/yr. & you get a key card for access to shoot 24/7. Public outdoor pistol/rifle range is free and has 25/50/100/200 yd targets. Both are ~5 minutes from home. Hope to be in the country soon so I don't have to pack up to go shoot a little or a lot. In the meanwhile, the other options are pretty decent!

Where Do I Shoot?

First of all, "where do I live"?

#1. Indiana.....a state that is "above average" (IMO ), when it comes to guns and shooting.

#2. In a county in far-western Indiana that has traditionally been controlled by conservatives (and Republicans ) for years and years now. where 99 out of every 100 home owners will "greet" a burglar or "home invader" with a load of shot or "worse".

#3. Because our 6 acres are bounded on one side by my good friend and neighbor, David D, and on the back side by my good friend and neighbor, (and County Commissioner), Dan C. I can shoot pretty much anytime the neighbors aren't in bed asleep.

#4. I have been able to set up my own "range" in a very deep "gully" about 150 yards from my back door; my biggest problem, oddly enough, is "sunlight"; the light is OK when it's sunny, but kinda dim when it's not sunny, due to all of the big high trees.

#5. This was just "Blind Luck"! There's a great public range just 2 or 3 miles away; and I just learned that my best friend, (Rob J ) is good friends with the fellow who owns the range; (and that it costs.......all of $25 a YEAR to belong to! ) I have a couple of friends who shoot there, so I may try it sometime.

#6. My LGS, (in Terre Haute, 30 mi from here ) is in a very nice "Strip Mall"; the fellow who owns the strip mall also owns the "Top Gun" franchise. (and is a great old guy, and fellow prostate cancer "survivor" )

#7. Right across the main road from the LGS is a HUGE building, that was a furniture store until the owner retired about a year ago; now, the old guy who owns the strip mall (and the gun store ), bought the huge building, and is in the very lengthy, and "jump thru all the hoops" of local Gubmint, to "convert" the HUGE former furniture store into a 50 yard, 17 lane, indoor shooting range, which will include "all calibers" up to and including "500 S&W"; (gonna really need some first rate hearing protection when they get that open and running! )

#8. Personally.......I'm looking forward to "trying" new options, but I seriously doubt if I'll ever do very much public shooting; much like my other main hobby, (photography ), when I'm shooting, I'm "concentrating", and I don't like a lot of company when I'm doing photography or shooting;

charley, are there crime statistics on your county?
can it be proved that armed households deter burglary?
we assume it can but i never see statistics.
