Thanks man. I just ordered 7 mags to add to the ones I already had, and you saved me over $60 over the previous sale price I had been buying them at. I like to own 6 mags for each caliber. I carry one in the gun and 2 spares. About once per month, I change out the 3 I carry with the 3 at home. Now I have 6 9MM and 6 40S&W. GREAT!

So rolltide you've got an AMT backup in both 9mm and .40 huh? They both work well? How many rounds do you have through them each?

No I am not. But I also recognize that they ain't mini Sigs.

I just got the AMT Backup in 40S&W. I went shopping for a KelTec P-11 with a chrome slide, but I saw this little number for $175 and decided to give it a whirl. I am REALLY GLAD I did. The AMT is nearly indentical in size to the Kahr MK40, except it is 0.5" longer. Although I find the Kahrs more pleasing to the eye, I find the AMT handles recoil better in rapid fire than even my Kahr K9 did (at least in my large hands anyway.) Pretty is as pretty does. The AMT is really reliable since I polished the feed ramp. Even new magazines sometimes need to be adjusted (feed lips were too wide on some), but with proper mags, it is 100% reliable so far (about 150 rounds). The accuracy is about minute-of-milkjug off hand at 30 feet, but for a pocket pistol in 40S&W with no sight, I figure that is about as good as one could expect. That is better that most 38 snubnoses I have fired. I am hoping my 357SIG barrel in the same gun proves more accurate.

I have not fired the 9MM yet.

I am hoping to have a AMT Backup in 45ACP soon as well. I will try to keep you posted.

Put CTC Laser grips on a .38/.357 snubbie and you will be amazed at the accuracy of the gun and how much is lost because of the poor sights.

I carried the AMT Backup 45 and 380 for many years until I got the Kimber Ultra Carry 45, Kahr PM40 and KelTec P3AT. Worse thing about the AMT is the trigger.

I think the AMT Backup 45 is still the smallest 45ACP auto loader ever made in significant quantities.

Rolltide, I have an unreliable AMT backup in 45 ACP. I believe it is the magazines because one of the six magazines I have for it works most of the time. What do you do to adjust the feed lips on the magazines? I like the gun and want to make it reliable. I can also shoot pretty accurately with it.

i see you are a pro on amt i just just got a amt backup 380 that was giving to me as a gift and it was never taking down and cleaned really good I am having so much problems trying to break it down i have read the direction but i dont understand that brass rod they tell you to put were the mag goes and pop some pin out i dont see nothing i pulled the pin out on the side of the slide and that didnt do nothing

any help is appreciated

My dad is a big fan of AMT because he used to own an Automag. He used to have a SA .380 AMT that almost never worked. He has an AMT Backup in .45acp and it works. It has a VERY heavy trigger pull but it has been reliable. It is small but not very light.

I've got the Backup 45ACP and love the gun. I bought it new in '95 or '96, whenever they first came out (mine's the first edition, minus firing pin restyle and a couple of other changes). I never had a single problem out of the gun, and for a simple point-and-shoot with two hands, I can nail a life-size silouhette about 95% of the time at 15 yards. At 10-12 yards, if carefully aiming, I can put every round into some nice head-shots.

The gun sat for about 6 years without ever being fired (with a full mag), and when I finally got around to shooting it three months ago, I was having failures to fire and extraction problems. Turns out it needed a new hammer spring and a new extractor spring. It runs like a top, again. Spare parts can be had at Brownell's. I picked up a spare hammer spring and extractor spring, just in case I ever need them. I also have a spare firing pin, extractor pivot pin, firing pin stop pin, and a couple other parts - just in case. The original hammer spring "shrank" by about 1/4", and the extractor spring "shrank" by about 1/8". I guess all those years, being under compression, finally took their toll on them.

Oh yeah.....I even have the factory offered, leather, inside-the-pants holster that was offered through an order form supplied with all the original paperwork. It isn't an AMT-brand holster. It is made by someone else. I forget who, off the top of my head.

Edit - My Backup has had about 750-1000 rounds fired through it since new.

Edit #2 - Just checked that link, posted in the first post. They are no longer available at that price. Looks like those, and the 45ACP mags, are $25, now. Forgot where I saw them, but someone had the 45ACP mags for $16 each, a while back........I've been tempted on taking a standard 1911 mag and putting a little cut out where the mag catch is on the Backup 45ACP. If I do, I can use a standard 1911 mag, as long as the mag spring doesn't hang up on the catch (The Backup 45ACP will easily feed from the standard 1911 mag, but there is no way to actually hold it in the gun to prevent the slide from pushing it out of the mag well........Maybe an Officers ACP 6-rounder, with a custom pinky rest, will be a cool mod for the little gun.....Hmmmm)

Although availability varies, I have from time to time seen AMT Backup magazines available from Metalform, CDNN and Ajax Grips. Now that High Standard is resurrecting the AMT line, I would suspect the magazine supply to increase.

Question for you experts though!

My AMT Backup in .22LR (bought in 1982) and only brought out last month again needed a new magazine. The original's grip extension broke. Anyway, once the new mag arrived I put in some Federal Ammo and it was unable to cycle the slide at all. Had to manually cycle each feed.

Moved to Stingers (CCI) and it fired and cycled but jammed once or twice.

The jam has to do with the nose of the bulled not making it into the barrel. Could be a magazine thing.

Would some silicone along the barrel channel help?

I probably don't love the gun as much as you do, but I also bought mine when they came out for (cough--$400--cough). It was my first small handgun.

I have similar results WRT accuracy. Not bad for an itty pistol with no sights and a HEAVY trigger.

Aker. They also made a front pocket holster. I own both as well as about 4 magazines. I found a Galco front pocket holster for the PPK also works.

Yeah, I was invested in the platform & it was my EDC for 5 years. It still comes out occasionally when my front-line carry weapons are dirty. I feed it hardball.

Another good point about the AMT is that they are as snag-free as you can make a pistol.
