I completely overlooked the E series by s&w. I've seen them on YouTube and read reviews, but for what ever reason I haven't thought about it, thank you for that.
The smith sure is nice looking. Should I go with the s&w I will have to order it.
I won't get to hold it or rent one.
I can't seem to find any complaints about them.
Thanks jgh4445 for making it more complicated.

I have 2 kimbers ,a tactical ultra 2 and a custom CDP 2, and a STI Trojan. I have had a great experience with kimbers. Both will eat anything I put through them, factory, my reloads. I carry the CDP a lot. The safety was alittle loose on it and there was a scratch on the slide stop when I bought it. I call Kimber about the loose safety and mentioned the scratch. The guy sent me a new stainless ambi safety, slide stop, and a new housing, spring, and plunger for the safety. That's pretty good in my book.

The STI I am having problems with stove-pipes. I think it is because I am shooting competition loads in it and the 18# recoil spring is too heavy, so I just bought a 14# recoil spring, 19# mainspring and a extra strength firing pin spring. Hopefully this will fix it. It will be used for major power USPSA single stack. 230gr ball going about 750fps. The Trojan is heavy compared to the CDP.

Dan Wessons can be found on gunbroker for less than your budget. What about the Sig MAXM? Its more of a competition pistol but sure is nice and would be fun to plink with. The S&W performance series 1911 look really nice as well, I have no experience with them.

Hmmm....

Nice looking guns:

Lots of choices within your budget.

Colt Wiley Clapp Gov't would be tough to beat at this price and one heck of an intro into the 1911.

I love my sig 1911, just want something more traditional looking.
My lgs has a stainless colt gold trophy cup for $1085......I think it was.
So at least I'm narrowed down to the trp and the colt.
I know I'm getting a great warranty and great customer service with the trp.
I know zero about colt except some of their recent woes.
I'm going to read as much as I can between now and support day regarding both pistols.
Thanks again for all of the help.

I know what you mean about wanting a traditional looking 1911. I bought a Colt Series 80 last year, the basic model, nothing fancy, and installed an EGW angle bore bushing to tighten up the front end a bit, and an oversized firing pin stop on the back because I like how the pistol performs with it. The sights are very basic fixed 3 dots which are good enough for general work. Buds guns has them for right around $700 most of the time.

Even though I have a couple of higher end Colts, its still my favorite one to shoot.

I bought this Colt government mainly because it was a traditional looking 1911 without all the extra bells and whistles, and also for the "100 Years of Service" rollmark on the slide.

I bought this Lightweight Government for everyday carry and for the range. Had just the right combination of weight and balance in my hand.

my vote woul d go for a Dan Wesson--either the heritage or specialist(if you get one at a good price)--good luck

I have a TRP, valued around that figure. Excellent gun.

I also have several $400 Armscorp, RIA, and Taurus 1911s.

Guess what the TRP does differently? Nothing worth notice.

They all go bang, and when they rarely don't, the cost to fix it is much less than the $1000 difference in pricetag.
