With the 18" barrel, and a twist rate of 1:10, what is the best weight in.308 to shoot to hit targets at +1,000 yards? I saw on other .308 forums that the 175 and 178 grain bullets were very accurate at hitting targets at that distance. However, that seemed to only be in regards to +20" barrels.

Also, that recoil is a beast. Installed a PRS buttstock and a hydraulic buffer which seemed to help a lot, but I'm still leaving the range pretty bruised. Might install a different muzzle brake, which is a shame because I really like the aesthetics of the one that came with the rifle. Considering buying this one... http://www.otsupplier.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=103&product_id=280

Huh. Always thought the recoil on the M&P 10 was pretty light. Maybe it's just the recoil pad on the HK buttstock I put on it.

As for ammo, barrel length isn't as much of a factor as the twist rate. I've had great luck with 175gr ammo, and right now I'm working on a new handload with Sierra 175gr TMK bullets.

Cool, thanks. I don't have a reloader, so I'll have to look for factory cased 175 gr.

Prvi Partizan is selling fmj for $18.49 for a box of 20 on Midway USA. I researched if they were any good and the forums gave it a thumbs up.

Prvi is good ammo, I use it in some of my other guns. Haven't shot their .308 yet. Expect it to be at least slightly underpowered compared to US match ammo. Price is def good though, you might even find it cheaper elsewhere.

Ok, thanks! I saw the Federal stuff, but it was in hp, and I'm more interested in fmj.

The 175 SMK and 178 AMAX if pushed fast enough usually stay supersonic to 1000 yards. Ive seen posts by guys with 16 inch barrels getting to 1000 with 175 SMKs.

Best way would to shoot some over a chrony and get your muzzle velocity. Then put that in a ballistic calculator to see if you stay supersonic to 1000.

18 inch barrel is cutting it close but is probably doable unless you have a barrel that shoots slow.

I dont think the 18" mp-10 is the platform for 1000 yd 308. Thats more like M21 range.

Also remember that the longer 175 and 178s take longer to settle down after being shot. Therefor they may be more accurate at a few hundred yards (moa wise) than at 100. Usually the 168s shoot tighter groups at closer ranges but it usually doesnt have the legs to get to 1000.

I think you'll be good with a 18 inch barrel. What kind of scope you are using will likely be of more importance than the barrel length.

Oh, I have a Vortex Diamond Back. So far it's been spot on with everything up to +300 yards, with targets as small as a grapefruit. But I've only been using 147 and 150 gr rounds.

It can and has been done. Not as optimal as something like a 24 inch 6.5 Creedmore, but a .308 can do it as long as your rifle is accurate and your load is still supersonic at 1000 yards. My M&P10 has been just as accurate as most bolt actions-sub MOA groups with handloads/match, so as long as I can get a load w/good BC and velocity I think it'd do fine. (If you can get a god accurate 175gr load going 2650 at the muzzle, you should be alright).

OP-I'm getting into long range myself and the biggest problem I've found other than reading the wind is having enough adjustment to account for bullet drop when it comes to a .308. For 1000 yards, you're talking a 40MOA drop.

For some decent affordable .308 ammo, try this:
http://www.shootersproshop.com/ssa-...er-state-armory-308-168gr-hpbt-blem-20ct.html
They also have $12 flat rate shipping. These come loaded with Nosler Custom Competition 168 gr BTHP bullets. They also are offering the same price for their 155 gr loads. Can't beat them for $14.95 per box. I can't even tell what makes them "seconds".
I just bought a box of Freedom Munitions 175 gr .308 for $15.00 from their site.

I dont think that scope will get you to 1000. But the SWFA SS 10x is 299 and is a HELL OF A SCOPE for the money. Get that with a 20 MOA 30mm mount and you will have a very capable package for minimal money.

That is good ammo. They are local and I bought a bunch when reloading components were scarce. If you get enough muzzle velocity from your rifle that load will get you to 1000.

I just looked up the Diamondback. It looks like it might have enough travel in the turrets to get you to 1000. However if it does it for sure wont be ideal and you are going to be turning those turrets something fierce.

You need to try the Diamondback out. The aperture seems much bigger than what it really is when sighting through it.
