Show me your favorite bolt action "fun" guns.

A simple Marlin single shot youth rifle. Nothing fancy but it is crazy accurate and cheap to shoot. My grandkids don’t even bother with the targets. They sit at the bench and shoot at the stems of weeds growing in the dirt from the shooting berm. ;)

Williams Fool Proof on Lever Guns

Williams also makes a Firesight . It is adjustable for windage and elevation. I have them on several of my Marlin 39a’s and one Marlin 336 in a 30-30. They are great for aging eyes.

    I have a Marlin 39a problem ;) …… a small Marlin 57M problem too

    Looking at 22 magnums

The top rifle is a 1957 Marlin 57M aka Levermatic in a 22wmr . It might just be the most fun 22 mag ever :) It has a 24 inch barrel, a tube mag, so it is a little heavy for a rimfire, but it is crazy accurate. It does quite well with CCI 40 grain solid points. It really likes Aguila 40 grain...

    Ruger Hawkeye Reputation?

I picked up a new one in 2009 . I had just been given great news my doctor said that I was in full remission. Since earlier in my sickness I had given most of my firearms to my sons, son in law and grandchildren I no longer had anything suitable for hunting. I decided that I would try calibers...

    Historical 39A accuracy

Several of mine wear Aperture sights which really help with my aging eyes. I also have a couple that wear period correct (old) 4x scopes . After everything is said and done they are a lot of fun and cheap to run. The best part is that my grand kids have already started calling dibs ;)

    Historical 39A accuracy

That is a 1952 Marlin 39a .It likes Aguila lead nose 40 grain standard velocity ( sub sonic round) better than anything else except for RWS subsonic 40 grain. I mostly feed it the Aguila due to price difference. Look at the target over my grandson’s left shoulder. That is the entire tube mag...

    Yard sale .22

Over the years I trained my daughter and then her younger brothers to transition from pellet guns to rim fires with this used Marlin model 15 YN……… still don’t know what the difference between the 15 Y and the 15 YN is 🤔………… I had considered hollowing out the stock and turning it into a...

My new Henry Frontier Octagon .22 Magnum

Skinner makes a brass apeture rear sight that is adjustable for windage and elevation. I had one installed on my Henry Golden boy 22WMR . My results were good enough that my grandson quickly talked his PawPaw into letting go home with him 🤣

357 Mag for taking mule & whitetail

As long as you are hitting where you are aiming you should be happy with your results. I can’t speak for mule deer as I have never hunted in an area where they live. A 357 through a rifle will turn Whitetail and feral pigs into table fair with little trouble. I my area deer don’t often get...

    Single shot 22

I have a Marlin 25 youth model that I used to teach my kids and now my grandchildren the basics of bolt action. You can also try to find a Marlin 15 little buckaroo (both are the same rifle). They are surprisingly accurate little rifles, and built bomb proof. I plan on hollowing the stock out...

    Beginnings with 22 LR

    ………… 22 rimfire … well about every 5000 rounds or so , just because I start feeling a little lazy …… as a child raised by a WW2 Marine ……… 🤔

    Favorite 25 Cal?

I have a 25-06 since 2009 . I have only used it on feral pigs and white tails. 117 grain Sierra Game Kings have turned out to be “ the Hammer of Thor” on Whitetails . Both Bambi and feral Hogs have both been “bang flops” in every case that I have used my 25-06 since 2009. Your mileage may vary...

    Pacemaker & Rifles

Good question. I used to with A Cardiology group up until 2004. The shooting of high powered rifles never made the list of short term or long term concerns when my docs would consult potential patients. Two of the group took guided big game hunts to Africa as well as the Rockies every year. One...

A Rifle For Large North American Animals

With proper shot placement ………… a lot of calibers might be enough , 🤔🤔 but the 30-06 is a no brainer … 👍

    Lever action 17 HMR

They may be blued now , but mine was purchased in 2008??…or so, and the receiver was painted. I am certain that Henry offers more than one model , so it is entirely possible that it comes in both blued steel a painted. Yes I scoped it. Henry actually offered an aftermarket scope mount for it.

    Lever action 17 HMR

I had a Henry 17 HMR . It was called the Varmit Express by Henry. I has been in the hands of my grandson for 7 years now. It was a tube fed lever gun. The action was smooth, and it was very accurate if a I did my part. I considered it a “head shot only” squirrel rifle. The Hornady 17 gr...

    .22LR vs .22 WMR?

About 30 years ago I was sitting at the base of a big Oak tree with my oldest son . He was in possession of my Marlin 39a 22lr, and I was carrying 22mag just to back him up on his squirrel hunt. He had taken a few , but nothing for the past hour or so……and we were hanging out at the base of that...
