10mm vs 45 ACP +P for bear defense according to the owner of Buffalo Bore

I like penetration over expansion. I like heavy revolvers over autos for dangerous animals. I like long guns over handguns to save my life. Overall, I think a lot of this nitpicking matters far less than a shooter's ability to act swiftly and decisively to stop a threat. I have never shot at a...

Those of you who use a semi-auto shotgun for defense, what condition do you keep it?

Magazine locked, bolt open. I never have small children in my house.

    Mixed Loads for Self-defense/Wilderness-defense carry?

Nah. This is overthinking and frankly, assuming a lot. So, you mix the load, based on a perceived level of threat. But, what if the small threat isn't the thing that shows up first? Now do you wish you had a different sequence loaded? I am thinking the idea to load for the most dangerous threat...

Deadly Force in Defense of the Home

Yeah, a couple of things come to mind here. The first, is that in my state, (Utah,) the Castle Doctrine allows you to use deadly force to prevent someone from entering your home. This verbiage obviously means that they are not yet inside. So how can they be a deadly threat, and how do you do...

    6” 1959 Colt Python? thoughts

I would bust open the piggy bank, hand over 17 Benjamins, and giggle with glee while my wife yelled at me.

    EDC/Defensive FMJ ammo options?

This. The difference isn't as dramatic as some people think it is. It's not like I have one plan for JHP and a different plan for FMJ. Carry the best round you can, get as many center of mass hits as you can as fast as you can.

Bretta 92X Performance VS Sig P320 X5 Legion

Because you mentioned durability, I would be cautious with the Beretta. Yes, I love the SA trigger. And I don't really know how hard you plan to run it, it might not matter. But I saw M-9s in all stages of life, from new in cosmoline to the finish being worn off, and when they fail, they fail...

    Cold weather handguns.

I don't plan to be collecting any brass from a defensive shooting. The only thing that is affected by the weather is whether I use a light base layer under an oversize t-shirt to conceal, or just tuck in a t-shirt and carry OWB under a coat.

    Gun Loyalty?

It's not that I hate the 6.5 CM, it's more like, I'm sometimes puzzled by the reasoning for why it takes decades to cycle through these concepts. And when they do....it isn't all that new. (6.5 Swede.) Maybe I'll get an upper in 6.5 one day, but right now I'm still trying to learn and maximize...

    Weapons retention for CCW?

I carry a knife (usually a Spyderco) in my weak-side pocket in anticipation of needing a backup in the event my strong arm is locked onto an arm trying to take my strong-side gun. When I taught concealed carry, I did explain the concept to the students, and told them that if they were going to...

How old were you when you first fired a firearm?

When I was four, (about 1977,) my dad took me to the local cinder pit and let me shoot his Ruger Standard Model. He warned me to not put my thumb behind the bolt, and to squeeze, not jerk. I had that pistol until recently when I passed it on to a nephew.

What are your most fun guns?

I have a Yugo SKS that I tricked out, and a .22 upper for my M4gery. They're fun because they are cheap to shoot, except that AK ammo is currently dried up because of the war in Ukraine. Hopefully that will soon be a side benefit of de-escalation there.

Older guys - when/how do you decide to sell your guns?

Heirlooms are not about cash value. At all. I have my grandfather's 1897 16 Ga. It needs to be re-barreled and completely overhauled. The only way to re-barrel it is to cannibalize a better gun. I'm going to do it, because I want my grandfather's gun to shoot and stay in the family. I have...

Older guys - when/how do you decide to sell your guns?

The older I get, the less inclined I am to get rid of guns. I did however recently give some heirlooms to younger family members.

.44 Mag vs .44 Mag Desert Eagle Ammo

Yeah, Desert Eagles are a bit picky with what loads they will cycle. Revolvers are not. I had a friend who bought a DE, and his brother gave him a lot of odds and ends left over from reloading for his revolvers, and he had all kinds of malfunctions and some feed ramp damage.

    Hearing protection

What's that? I am currently explaining to the VA that shooting guns in the army caused all my hearing problems, and Alex Van Halen's snare drum had nothing to do with it. Double-up, plugs and muffs.

    Rock Island thoughts?

I love mine. I have a 9mm/.22 TCM combo, it took some tweaking to get it running perfectly. (Wilson Combat Bulletproof extractor.) I think most of the drama came from trying to set it up to run with two different cartridges. Now the 9mm runs perfectly, the TCM runs mostly ok, most of the time...

    My road rage shooting/.22 TCM

It's a fair enough question. I have one, but the only reason I have it, is that when I wanted to buy a RIA 9mm, they were only selling them as "22 TCM that converts to 9mm." So I got it, and I only run it as a 9mm. It's fun, it's loud, and it will turn small rodents into a fine, pink mist. The...

    LPVO versus red dot

A factor that made a difference for me, is I have astigmatism. So I got issued a red dot in the army, and I made it work, but I never got rid of the squiggle. It was ok, I qualified, but the last couple of times I snapped on a magnifier which helped a little. So on my main go-to rifle now, I...
