    .38-40 Test With 3F Swiss & Vectan PFN2 (3F).

After my rusty muzzleloader I was instructed to use oil such as Ballistol to soak into the fouling leaving no room for moisture. I tested this during the summer in my central Texas garage with both revolvers (stainless and blued) for 4 days and found it works like a charm. I don’t rely on this...

    .38-40 Test With 3F Swiss & Vectan PFN2 (3F).

I read stuff like this when I first got started. Granted I was using Pyrodex, but because I had read from several competition shooters leaving their guns for a week or more I tried that with my muzzleloader as I had been shooting for over 8 hours and was late for dinner. I cleaned up my two...

Where did you acquire the PFN? I had thought it not imported as only Europeans speak of it, and that rarely.

Impressive velocities from such a short barrel! Which do you prefer, Swiss or PFN? I’ve only ever read about the French and South African sporting grade powders.

Is certainly like to hear back on any results when you do.

4F Swiss Revolver Loads, Who Uses It?

I have Track of the Wolf nipples in my Ruger but am contemplating some for my NMA. Hadn’t really thought about that, I have tiny brass rods that I use as nipple picks with stock Pietta nipples that don’t fit through the Ruger nipples.

4F Swiss Revolver Loads, Who Uses It?

Long ago I came across the work a fella had done concerning Hazard’s paper cartridges of which he had and tested the .44 caliber version. He tore one open and inspected the powder finding it to be 4F granulation. According to records their new Pistol Powder used was 36 grns under a 211 grn...

45 Colt Loaded with Pyrodex Pellets

Seems those pellets have some perk to them.

    The "Bear Gun"

I’m a bit curious as to the Pietta’s riflings. When I got my Pietta Remington Sheriff I was told it would have the slower 1:30” twist, and so I went to designing short bullets for it. But when I finally checked it for myself I found it has 1:16” twist. Seems Pietta doesn’t state such though...

    The "Bear Gun"

Hmmm, sounded like he went with the 250 grn load from what he said, unless I missed something, which is entirely possible. Maybe, just maybe a hard cast 200 grn bullet, but I’d still want a lot more mass, which is why I went heavy. I’ve never ever heard of a light bullet bear load being...

    The "Bear Gun"

A 200 grn bullet isn’t really what I’d be looking for when dealing with bears. I saw, after the sight fell off, he went to a heavier 250 grn bullet I believe, after fixing that issue. I’m curious what that load is. I thought we’d be moving to Virginia and so bears would be a thing for me too. I...

    paper revolver cartridges

I have a ton of the American Spirits papers as I been buying the roll your own but used filtered tubes as I had lost my job, and those sure were expensive! Thankfully I quit not long after that. Being additive free was interesting as Marlboro clearly has been using new chemicals to keep people...

    paper revolver cartridges

I make mine with a twisty tail. It’s so much easier and quicker. I’d notice a shard or three every cylinder, and towards the end of my day decided to leave them and see if they caused any issues. I only had enough for three cylinders worth left, but they all went off fine and didn’t accumulate...

    A 38 SW question

Hogdgon’s states to use their 2F version for metallic cartridges, never to use the 3F. It seems most people seem to recommend 2F regardless of the powder, though I don’t see why one would care to.

    A 38 SW question

They probably took down the reduction of powder because so many were spreading tales of how dangerous it could be over black powders or other substitutes. It went far and wide for sure, and it’s clearly still a strongly held belief…

    A 38 SW question

The bottle does not say that at all. I posted what it states on the bottle. Online it used to tell you to reduce by 15% but that was to replicate what standard black powders common here in the US produced as it’s a sporting grade powder like Swiss, Olde Eynsford, and a few uncommon to us...

    A 38 SW question

Curator here, a museum curator, took many metallic cartridges from the early days apart and said he found 4F common, even in large calibers, as well as found some with finer powders. According to the research done and posted by a fellow Hazard’s paper cartridges used their new Pistol Powder...

    A 38 SW question

Triple 7 is also a straight across load measured by volume, unless you want the performance of the standard weaker powders. Hogdgon’s states it’s equivalent right there on their bottle. Says right there in the beginning of the third paragraph, “Use by equivalent volume to FFFG black powder…”
